Muth Speeds To ‘TDN Rising Star’ Status After Flashy Debut

Muth (c, 2, Good Magic–Hoppa, Uncle Mo), a $2 million purchase back in March at OBS, certainly lived up to expectations Sunday afternoon at The Great Race Place as he won convincingly in his debut at odds of 1-5 and stamped himself as a newly-minted 'TDN Rising Star' for his efforts.

After settling down in the gate, the bay colt briefly broke outward, but flashed some strong early foot to seize the lead up the backstretch. Immediately distancing himself from the rest of the field, the Bob Baffert trainee poured on the power around the far turn. Into the stretch, despite the efforts of El Magnifico (Street Sense) and Harry Houdini, Juan Hernandez geared his mount down en route to break his maiden by 8 3/4 lengths.

The winner, who tied and OBS sale record when he was purchased by Amr Zedan, breezed during the under tack show in March going a furlong in :9 3/5.

The first of Hoppa's offspring to make the races, she also has a yearling filly by Violence and foaled a filly by Tacitus May 10. Second dam Handoverthecat (Tale of the Cat) passed away in 2017. Third dam Frayne (Red Ransom), who was sent to Saudi Arabia in 2011, is a full-sister to GSW Wandering Star.

Muth is the second 'Rising Star' for sire Good Magic, with other being Blazing Sevens, who was second in this year's GI Preakness S.

Invader to Stand at Pegasus Stud

Stakes-winner Invader (War Front–Say {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) will begin his stud career in 2024 at Carmine Spinella's Pegasus Stud in Colts Neck, New Jersey. The 6-year-old, who is a full-brother to Grade I winner Fog of War, won the 2020 John Battaglia Memorial S. and was second in that year's GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks. On the board in seven of 11 starts, he won three times and earned $223,025.

“Invader has a world-class pedigree, excellent conformation and size.” said Rick Sacco, who brokered the deal to bring the stallion to New Jersey. “The stakes winner hails from a very live female family. His 2-year-old half-sister by Justify recently sold for $556,042 at Goffs.”

Spinella added, “I told Rick that we had to have a stallion that complemented our current stud Sea Wizard (Uncle Mo). I wanted to offer New Jersey breeders a stallion with a top-class pedigree for turf. I'm very excited about standing a horse like Invader at my newly acquired farm and to offer this type of pedigree.”

Invader is currently boarded at Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky where he is test breeding mares.

Wine On Tap Dispenses With First Maiden Win

1st-Belmont, $87,300, Msw, 6-18, 2yo, f, 5f, :58.74, ft, 3 lengths.
WINE ON TAP (f, 2, Tapit–Princess La Quinta {GSW, $178,148}, by Quality Road) debuted here as the even-money co-favorite alongside Looks First (Mor Spirit). Breaking from post four, the gray filly tracked a longshot from second up the backstretch, pulled even with her rival past the quarter pole and went on to graduate by 3 lengths over the late-running Ilikefunsize (Upstart). The winner is her dam's first to make the races, but she does have a 3-year-old half-brother named Rapacious (Into Mischief), who was in-utero when Aaron & Marie Jones purchased Princess La Quinta in 2019 at the Keeneland November sale for $600,000. In 2021, the colt went for $400,000 Ylg KEESEP to SF Bloodstock/Starlight/Madaket. Wine On Tap also has a yearling full-sister. Sales History: $600,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP. Saffie Joseph Jr. Resumes Training at NYRA; Gets 23 Stalls at Saratoga

Saffie Joseph Jr. has nominated Violet Gibson (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}) to the Wild Applause S. at Belmont Saturday, June 24, and has been given 23 stalls for the summer at Saratoga Race Course, according to an email from NYRA's Vice President of Communications, Patrick McKenna.

“Following consistent and productive dialogue between Saffie Joseph Jr. and NYRA, Joseph Jr. will resume training and racing at NYRA tracks,” McKenna wrote. “He has nominated Violet Gibson to the $150,000 Wild Applause and has been allotted 23 stalls for the 2023 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course. NYRA will adjust accordingly should the investigation in Kentucky reveal any wrongdoing.”

Two of Joseph's trainees died of unexplained causes in the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby, causing Churchill Downs to suspend him indefinitely, and scratch his Derby entrant, Lord Miles (Curlin) from the race.

While Joseph was never officially forbidden from running at NYRA, the association issued a statement after the Churchill ban that made it clear he would not be running at New York tracks.

“Following recent events at Churchill Downs, which remain under investigation by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, NYRA has engaged in discussions with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.,” said McKenna at the time. “Mr. Joseph has no horses stabled at Belmont Park and, to our understanding, is not currently planning on shipping horses to New York or entering races at Belmont Park while the matter is under investigation. NYRA will continue to evaluate our response should new information come to light.”

“In general, after what happened at Churchill, we wanted answers,” said Joseph in explaining his absence from New York. “I was going to give NYRA respect until I got answers, thinking it would be four weeks maximum. Obviously, this carried over a much longer period.” The necropsy result released on the first of the two horses, Parents Pride, was inconclusive, according to a statement from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on June 3. The report said that bloodwork did not detect any prohibited substances or overages of allowed medications. A necropsy report on the second horse, Chasing Artie, is still pending.
