Hartack Derby Trophies Top Sports Memorabilia Auction

A group of five Lemon & Son brand sterling silver engraved Kentucky Derby trophies won from 1957 to 1969 by legendary jockey Bill Hartack, was the top offering at Julien's Auctions' three-day Sports Legends auction held over the weekend online and live in the company's auction house in Beverly Hills. The trophies sold for $317,000.

Hartack's five wins (aboard Iron Liege in 1957; Venetian Way in 1960; Decidedly in 1962; Northern Dancer in 1964; and Majestic Prince in 1969) tie him with Eddie Arcaro for most Derby victories by a jockey.

The weekend's auction also featured nearly nine hundred game winning jerseys, medals, memorabilia, and collectibles from sports stars such as Michael Jordan, Pele, Kobe Bryant, Diego Maradona, Babe Ruth, and Rafael Nadal.

Two Phil’s Likely Finished For 2023 With Ankle Injury

MGSW and GI Kentucky Derby runner up Two Phil's (Hard Spun) exited his win in Saturday's GIII Ohio Derby at Thistledown with an ankle injury and is unlikely to race again in 2023. The Daily Racing Form was first to report the news. He was being transported to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, where he'll undergo further evaluation and is expected to be operated on by Dr. Larry Bramlage said trainer Larry Rivelli.

Rivelli added that Two Phil's showed no sign of injury until Sunday morning, when pressure was detected in his right front ankle.

“It probably puts him out for the rest of the year,” Rivelli said. “We're sick.”

Rivelli said stallion farms have shown interest in acquiring Two Phil's, and it's not out of the question that the colt won't run again.

“He doesn't owe us anything. In my experience, they aren't usually the same horse after something like this. We don't know the extent of it all yet. The amount of time off he'll need still is to be determined,” Rivelli said.

NYRA To Increase Purses For NY-Breds At Saratoga

Registered New York-bred horses competing in open company at the upcoming summer meet at Saratoga Race Course will receive a new series of purse increases the New York Racing Association, Inc. announced Sunday.

“NYRA is committed to supporting and enhancing the New York-bred program now and in the future,” said Frank Gabriel, NYRA SVP of Racing Operations. “These purse increases reflect the sustained growth of the New York-bred marketplace while also rewarding owners already invested in the program.”

The purse for registered New York-breds running in select open-company races will be 30 percent higher than the purse offered for non-New York-breds. Additionally, New York State Breeding Fund Owner Awards (NYSBFOA) and breeder awards will be paid on top of the 30 percent additional purse for registered New York-breds.

“The opportunity for registered New York-breds to compete for elevated purses in select open company conditions during the Saratoga meet, along with increases in breeder and open company awards provided by the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding & Development Fund reflect the commitment by New York's respective thoroughbred racing stakeholders in continuing to elevate the New York-bred program,” said Najja Thompson, New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) Executive Director. “We are confident much of the money earned from these purse increases will be reinvested in New York-breds, starting with the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred Select Yearlings Sale in August at Saratoga.”
