Surge Capacity Gives Brown Yet Another Lake George

It's a tall task to beat Chad Brown at Saratoga, especially when he has half the field. SURGE CAPACITY (f, 3, Flintshire {GB}–Strong Incentive, by Warrior's Reward)–one of four entrants from the Brown barn in the GIII Lake George S.–was the least experienced of the field but carried the day, taking Friday's featured race at the Spa after scraping the paint and finishing bravely for the win. A first-out Monmouth maiden winner June 10 at a sixteenth further with an 80 debut Beyer Speed Figure, Surge Capacity gave Brown a fifth consecutive victory and seventh overall–all since 2015–in the race, while Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables was winning the race for the third time in the last four renewals. The team also scored the 2023 exacta as Klaravich's Brown-trained Tax Implications (GB) (Mehmas {Ire}) was the runner-up.

Away sharply, Surge Capacity was prominent early before Joel Rosario eased her back a bit to sit a joint third on the rail through the :24.97 first quarter and :49.84 half set by Secret Money (Good Samaritan) with Princess Bettina (Will Take Charge) hounding the leader from second. Restrained behind the frontrunners, Surge Capacity was ready to pounce when a hole opened up into the lane. The dark bay had the measure of Secret Money, poking her head in front a furlong from home, and still had enough to hold off her surging stablemate. Brown's Revalita (Fr) (Recoletos {Fr}) and Liguria (War Front) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

“She's been straightforward,” said Brown of the winner. “She took a while to get to the races, but she's two-for-two to start her career in only her second start winning a graded stakes against some nice fillies. She's a pretty talented horse, I'd say.”

The turf was marked as yielding Friday with the Lake George remaining the day's only race kept on the grass.

“This was the [filly] I was going to run if it came off [the grass]. I know, Flintshire on the dirt, but she has never trained bad on the dirt. I'm not saying I'll put her there off this, but I'm going to see how she trains over it. She might be a pretty versatile horse. The female family is all dirt, so it wouldn't surprise me.”

You'll be forgiven a case of deju vu if a graded-winning Klaravich homebred trained by Brown out of Strong Incentive (Warrior's Reward) sounds familiar. Last year's GIII Monmouth Cup S. winner and GII Toyota Blue Grass S. runner-up Highly Motivated (Into Mischief) is a half-brother to Surge Capacity. Klaravich Stable bought Strong Incentive as a 2-year-old for $200,000 at the OBS Spring sale and she was a minor listed winner at Woodbine for Brown in 2015 before turning into a two-time graded producer. Her most recent produce is an unraced juvenile filly named Ways and Means (Practical Joke), who posted a five-furlong work at Saratoga July 15 in 1:01 (6/31).

Surge Capacity is by Juddmonte's 2016 U.S. grass champion Flintshire (GB)–also a Group 1 winner in France and Hong Kong–who began his stallion career at Hill 'n' Dale in Kentucky before moving to Haras de Montaigu in France prior to the 2022 season. She marks the third graded/group winner and fourth overall black-type winner for the stallion who won three graded races at Saratoga himself, including the GI Sword Dancer S. twice. Surge Capacity also denotes the 10th black-type winner out of a daughter of the Medaglia d'Oro son Warrior's Reward, whose others include the aforementioned Highly Motivated and 'TDN Rising Star', GI Champagne S. winner, and Friday's Curlin S. third-place finisher Blazing Sevens (Good Magic).

Played Hard Could Start Next in Grade I Personal Ensign

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Though Rigney Racing's Played Hard (Into Mischief) will miss the GII Shuvee because of a fever, trainer Phillip Bauer said Friday that she might run in the GI Personal Ensign on Aug. 25.

Bauer said it's a moving target that he could set his sights on.

“We'll hopefully get time to get a breeze into her next week and see what she does,” he said.

Another possible start could be in the GIII Locust Grove on Sept. 16 at Churchill Downs in the race she won last year.

Played Hard was found to have the fever before Bauer entered her Thursday in the Shuvee, where the GI La Troienne winner would have faced Clairiere (Curlin) and Nest (Curlin). He said she bounced back quickly after receiving treatment.

“She's good,” he said. “It was one of those things that maybe we could have entered and ran, but if she did run bad, then you're mad at yourself. So, with that caliber horse you've got to do the right thing.”

The Shuvee was the race Played Hard was pointed to after her third-place finish in the GI Ogden Phipps on June 10, with the Personal Ensign an option.

“It wasn't 100% sure,” he said, “but it was definitely something that we're considering between that and the Locust Grove. It might be a blessing in disguise.

It seems like her races, when she comes back in four weeks aren't her best. So maybe skipping this heat, maybe we'll run into a situation like last year where Clairiere doesn't fire her shot in the next month. It's one of those deals. We'll be fine. We'll just play the hand we're dealt and move on.”

Co-Owner Restrepo to Donate Portion of Mage’s Earnings to Cancer Charity

GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic) is owned by OGMA Investments, LLC, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing LLC and CMNWLTH, but when he tackles a tough group of opponents in Saturday's GI Haskell S. he will be running for more than just the four ownership groups. Restrepo announced Friday that, starting with the Haskell, he will be donating a portion of Mage's earnings to the Dwoskin Children's Cancer Research Fund at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The story was first reported by the Daily Racing Form's Mike Welsch.

The fund was named in honor of Steve Dwoskin, a veteran trainer on the South Florida circuit, who estimates he has donated $15 million to cancer related causes.

Though a successful trainer, much of Dwoskin's income has come from a career selling auto parts.

“What Ramiro is doing, it's unbelievable,” the 80-year-old trainer said. “It's a really beautiful gesture on his part. This is a good story. I think a lot of people will see this and they'll all be rooting for Mage.”

Dwoskin started donating to cancer-related charities 22 years ago after his father and brother died of the disease. About eight years ago, he started to focus on cancer research for children. With Dwoskin's help, the Dwoskin Children's Cancer Research Fund at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center was started.

“I met this woman whose husband was a big doctor down here,” Dwoskin said. “She lost an 8-year-old son to cancer. I saw it on TV, on channel 7, and I went to meet her. I just realized I have a calling. If somebody is 80 or 90-years-old and dies of cancer I can handle that. When someone who is 8-years-old dies, I can't handle it. I just don't understand it.”

Restrepo said he had long admired Dwoskin for his work and for his philanthropy.

“Steve has been a local, Florida horseman for many, many years and is real supportive of the South Florida racing industry,” Restrepo said. “He's also a huge benefactor to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. I am a Miami alumni. I have lost two family members to cancer, my grandfather and an uncle on my father's side. So I am sensitive to that disease. There's a synergy between the University of Miami, Steve Dwoskin and the disease itself which has hit close to home for me. That all came together. I met with Steve and some of the fundraisers and chair members over at the University of Miami on the pediatric cancer side. We chatted about working with each other. This opportunity came up and I was more than happy to contribute. Mage is a horse that has many followers and it's nice to be able to use his platform to create awareness for what Steve has been doing. There is such a depth to his commitment. Steve has donated so much money toward the pediatric cancer research foundation. When you sit down with him and hear it from the horse's mouth it's pretty impressive.”

Four Additional Trainers Handed Provisional Suspensions By HIWU

The Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU) has updated its list of trainers that have been provisionally suspended after their horses have allegedly tested positive for banned substances, and the new names are Natalia Lynch, David Reid, Javier Morzan and Mary Pirone.

Lynch, who is based in New York and had a winner Sunday at Saratoga, was sanctioned for allegedly having a horse test positive for Altrenogest. According a 2018 press release from the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC), Altrenogest is a progesterone receptor agonist used to control estrus in fillies or maintenance of pregnancy in mares. It is marketed in the United States as an oral formulation known as ReguMate. According to the National Library of Medicine's website, Altrenogest is structurally similar to the anabolic androgenic steroid, trenbolone.

The horse in question is Motion to Strike (Competitive Edge), who tested positive after finishing fourth in a $5,000 claimer at Monmouth June 24. The horse was claimed from that race by owner-trainer Silvino Ramirez. Ramirez now has the option of having the void claimed and returning the horse to Lynch.

According to Equibase, Lynch has been training since 2020 and has had 21 winners from 214 starts. She is 5-for-56 on the year.

In regards to Lynch, NYRA issued the following statement Friday: “NYRA has been alerted via HIWU that a horse under the care of trainer Natalia Lynch has tested positive for the banned substance Altrenogest. Per HISA rules, Lynch is now under a provisional suspension nationally and cannot participate in any activities at NYRA tracks. HISA/HIWU rules allow for Lynch to request a formal hearing and the analysis of a split sample. Lynch had occupied four stalls at Saratoga Race Course and 11 stalls at Belmont Park. Horses under Lynch's care are being transferred to a covered person who is not affiliated with Lynch as required by HIWU.”

Also new to the list, trainer Mary Pirone was also provisionally suspended for an Altrenogest positive. Based at Emerald Downs, Pirone has been training since 1987. She has won just two races since 2020, going 2-for-31 over that time. Pirone's Benny the Jet (Bernardini) tested positive after finishing fifth in a $2,500 claimer at Emerald Downs June 24. He was also claimed out of that race and in his next start he won for trainer Jorge Rosales and owner Dawn Spillman.

Trainer McLean Robertson, the dominant trainer at Canterbury Park, was also provisionally suspended by HIWU for Altrenogest.

Trainer Javier Morzan was provisionally suspended after his horse Lady Liv (Bal a Bali {Brz} tested positive for Metformin. Top Northern California trainer Jonathan Wong was also provisionally suspended for Metformin. Metformin is commonly used in humans to combat type 2 diabetes. While Metformin is a permitted medication by the U. S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for humans in athletic competition, the National Institutes of Health published a study indicating it has an effect on athletic performance. In a study of 10 men, they determined that “time to exhaustion was significantly higher after Metformin than placebo ingestion,” and that “Metformin improved performance and anaerobic alactic contribution during high-intensity exercise.”

Morzan is currently racing at Delaware Park. He is 5-for-60 on the year and has won 18 total races during a career that began in 2020.

HIWU's list also includes trainer David Reid, who was provisionally suspended after a horse he trained tested positive for Venlafaxine. In humans, Venlafaxine is used to treat depression. It is also used to treat general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. Reid, who  is based at Hawthorne, has a career record of 36 wins from 184 starters.
