Hoosier Philly Out Of CCA Oaks With Minor Foot Issue At Saratoga

Set to lineup as the 5-2 morning-line co-second choice this afternoon in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga, Hoosier Philly (Into Mischief) has scratched with a minor foot issue, her trainer Tom Amoss reported Saturday morning via Twitter.

Amoss said, “Hoosier Philly was not herself this morning with a minor foot issue. Out of an abundance of caution, agreement with the state vets, & doing the right thing by her, she will be withdrawn from the CCAO. We look forward to getting back to the track in the future.”

The CCA Oaks field now has five 3-year-old fillies remaining with Brad Cox's Wet Paint (Blame) serving as the 2-1 morning-line favorite.

Graded Stakes Sunday Pits Clairiere Versus Nest In Shuvee

After a rousing Saturday lineup, the stakes weekend isn't complete yet, as Saratoga, Woodbine and Del Mar present graded offerings.

The marquee match on Sunday is the GII Shuvee S. at Saratoga, which honors the 1970 and 1971 champion older female by Nashua who was the second filly to win the Triple Tiara. The Virginia bred is also the only filly to ever defeat colts in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. And she did that twice.

Though only four are entered here, the race includes the defending champion from last year in Clairiere (Curlin), who comes in after a pair of Grade I victories in the Apple Blossom H. at Oaklawn Park and the Ogden Phipps S. at Belmont Park.

The veteran mare trained by Steve Asmussen will take on last year's champion 3-year-old filly Nest (Curlin), who is making her first start of the year for trainer Todd Pletcher. The bay filly collected a pair of Grade I wins last summer at Saratoga when she won the Coaching Club of America Oaks and the Alabama S.

Shifting to Woodbine, they card a pair of graded races on Sunday starting with the GIII Trillium S. for 3-year-old fillies and up over the Tapeta, which has Souper Hoity Toity (Uncle Mo) as the 2-1 morning-line leader. The $550,000 OBSMAR purchase won the GIII Belle Mahone S. by a neck and the Mark Casse trainee will face many of the same competitors once again in this spot. Switching to the grass, the other graded event in Toronto is the GII Connaught Cup S., which includes veteran turf traveler Bound for Nowhere (The Factor). The 9-year-old will face the winner of the GII Highlander S., Lucky Score (Lookin At Lucky) and Churchtown (Air Force Blue), who just missed last time out in the Opening Verse S. at Churchill Downs.

Finally, the weekend graded action wraps up at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club with the annual renewal of the 12-furlong GIII Cougar II S. over the dirt. The class edge goes to Kiss Today Goodbye (Cairo Prince), who ran third May 29 in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita and Azul Coast (Super Saver) who hasn't been seen since he ran second last November at Del Mar in the GIII Native Diver S. Bye Bye Bobby (Quality Road), an $870,000 KEESEP buy, ships in from New Mexico.

Collected’s Conclude Strong in Oceanside on Del Mar’s Opening Weekend

Conclude (Collected) brought his stakes-winning form with him from Santa Anita and returned to the winner's circle in Del Mar's customary opening day feature–the Caesars Sportsbook Oceanside S.

A winner a black-type winner at the turf sprint distance last out May 21 in Santa Anita's Desert Code S., Conclude's first race after his freshening from that contest proved fruitful as the 9-2 second choice here. Showing some early speed after the jump but quickly overtaken and outrun by a loose leader on the clubhouse turn, the chestnut son of GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Believe You Can bided his time in second as Game Time (Not This Time) reeled off :22.17, :46.58 and 1:11.32 splits. Three furlongs out and locking horns with that one around the far turn, Conclude took over nearing the head of the stretch and drove clear to a stylish 1 1/4-length victory. The 5-2 favorite Classical Cat tried gamely to catch him but had to settle for second while 26-1 shocker Ah Jeez gave his sire two of the top three placings in the trifecta. Conditioner Philip D'Amato went 1-2 as well as picking up his 45th stakes victory and third Oceanside S.

“When he opened up a length or two at the top of the lane, I thought he was the horse,” said D'Amato after the race. “Classical Cat was coming on pretty good, but I think when Conclude felt him, he just spurted out again. I'm proud of both my horses.”

Conclude is his dam's most recent to the races as she aborted her 2021 American Pharoah. Believe You Can did have a yearling filly by Nyquist but her 2023 foal by Essential Quality was stillborn. The mare is a full-sister to the dam of GISP King Russell (Creative Cause) and a half to the dam of MSP Baytown Bear (Upstart). Ghostzapper Firster Highly Impressive On Del Mar Debut

2nd-Del Mar, $84,500, Msw, 7-21, 3yo/up, 6 1/2f, 1:15.18, ft, 5 1/4 lengths.
DR. VENKMAN (g, 3, Ghostzapper–Theory of Change, by Archarcharch), one of two first-starters in the field, took a fair bit of action at 4-1 with apprentice Armando Aguilar claiming a five-pound weight allowance. Off to a bit of a hesitant beginning, the $105,000 KEESEP yearling quickly made up for lost time and was right in behind the leading trio approaching the turn. Traveling strongly on the bend, he was produced four wide into the lane and pulled away smartly to score by open lengths. A half-brother to this year's Fasig-Tipton Juvenile S. hero Tranche (Collected)–whose paternal grandsire City Zip is a half-brother to Ghostzapper–Dr. Venkman is also related to a yearling colt by Street Sense.
