Mor Spirit Sires First Winner At Woodbine

VELOCITOR, a homebred for Ontario's Al & Bill Ulwelling, debuted second after a troubled trip nearly one month ago at Woodbine and returned in a similar spot over five furlongs Thursday as the 8-5 co-choice to give freshman sire Mor Spirit (by Eskendereya) his first winner. Sharp from the gate, he dueled outside of Confusing (More Than Ready) as the pair came away nearly four lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Still separated by just a head around the far turn, Velocitor finally wore down and got the best of his rival as they straightened for home. He made it a one-horse race from there, drawing off uncontested to win by 7 1/2 lengths.

Out of a half-sister to GSW Shakopee Town (Jersey Town), Velocitor has a yearling full-sister in the pipeline.

Mor Spirit, winner of the GI Los Alamitos Futurity at two and the Mohegan Sun Metropolitan H. at four, stands for $5,000 at Spendthrift Farm.

2nd-Woodbine, C$101,430, Msw, 6-30, 2yo, 5f (AWT), :58.55, ft, 7 1/2 lengths.

Clark Named Thoroughbred Owner Conference Keynote Speaker

Stacie Clark, operations consultant for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), will be the keynote speaker for OwnerView's in-person Thoroughbred Owner Conferenceat Saratoga Race Course July 25-26, 2022.

Clark has been with the TAA since its inception in 2012 and assumed the role of operations consultant in 2014. Previously, she created the first in-house retirement program while serving as Thoroughbred Retirement Program manager at Adena Springs.

Clark rode as a jockey in Ontario and was nominated for the 1994 Sovereign Award as Outstanding Apprentice in Canada. When Woodbine Racetrack expanded its television department in 1999, she crossed over to associate producer and racing television commentator.

Clark will provide her perspective on the evolution of aftercare from the early 2000s to today, highlight the progress made by the industry, and discuss future challenges.

“Thoroughbred aftercare has moved to the forefront of industry priorities in the last 20 years or so, and Stacie has been one of the great influencers in moving the needle in this area, including participating in previous Thoroughbred Owner Conferences,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “In both our in-person and virtual conferences, OwnerView has emphasized the importance of aftercare as part of a stable's business plan, and we are excited to have Stacie joining us as our keynote to talk about this important topic.”

Woodbine Teams Up With You Can Play Project

Woodbine Entertainment is partnering with the You Can Play Project (YCP) to increase the level of inclusion for everyone who participates in the sport of horse racing. This includes 2SLGBTQ+ athletes, administrators, horse people, and fans. Woodbine is the first horse racing organization in all of North America to partner with the YCP.

“This partnership is a reflection of our determination and commitment to do more to break down barriers and make our sport more inclusive,” said Woodbine CEO Jim Lawson. “Horse racing has a rich history throughout the world, but we see an opportunity to be more inclusive, and to be allies to the 2SLGBTQ+ community.”

YCP works to ensure the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches and fans. Celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, YCP provides support, education and outreach to ensure the 2SLGBTQ+ community is safe and welcomed in sport, and athletes and participants are judged on their skill, talent and contribution and not their sexuality or gender identity.

The partnership kicks off this June during Pride month with various initiatives planned over the next year including inclusivity training for Woodbine Entertainment staff, jockeys, drivers, trainers, and other horse racing participants. Woodbine Racetrack and Woodbine Mohawk Park will also host You Can Play themed race days in 2023 to raise awareness and 50/50 fundraising draws to support the You Can Play Project.
