Second ‘Truth to Power’ Panel to Be Held Wednesday

The Racing Biz, LLC, a media company focused on Thoroughbred racing and breeding in the mid-Atlantic region, will host the second in a series of digital panel discussions designed to tackle issues of diversity and inclusion within the Thoroughbred industry Mar. 17 at 5 p.m. ET.

The series, titled “Truth to Power,” was created by The Racing Biz founder Frank Vespe in partnership with freelance journalist Teresa Genaro and NTRA Director of Communications Alicia Hughes for the purpose of bringing together participants from the racing realm and other sports to share their perspectives on racial, gender, and social inequality within their respective industries and the importance of and efforts to promote greater inclusion.

The upcoming panel is set to feature Renee Hess, founder and executive director of Black Girl Hockey Club, a non-profit and advocacy group focused on making hockey more inclusive for the Black community; Ron Mack, founder of Legacy Equine Academy, which promotes the equine and agriculture industry to racially diverse middle and high school students; and Leon Nichols, CEO and founder of the Louisville-based Project to Preserve African American Turf History.

“We are so pleased our first panel attracted an active viewership who contributed questions and comments, and we are very much appreciative of the media coverage that followed,” Vespe, Genaro, and Hughes said jointly. “We look forward to more impactful conversations as the series moves forward.”

The first “Truth to Power” panel took place Feb. 24 and featured noted bloodstock agent Greg Harbut, his business partner, Lexington-based entrepreneur Ray Daniels, and Rose Grissell, head of Diversity and Inclusion for the British Horseracing Authority. An archive of that panel can be found here.

The Mar. 17 panel will be streamed on both The Racing Biz website and social media platforms @TheRacingBiz as well as on the NTRA's Twitter account @NTRA.

Tentative dates for future panels include Apr. 7 at 5 p.m. ET.

Revved Up To Stud in Oklahoma

Revved Up (Candy Ride {Arg}–Storm Flag Flying, by Storm Cat), a multiple graded-stakes placed winner of $372,524, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Lori and Francisco Bravo's River Oaks Farm in Sulphur, Oklahoma. He will stand for a fee of $2,000 as the property of the Revved Up syndicate.

A five-time winner at the races and placed in the GIII River City H. and GIII Arlington H., the Phipps-bred Revved Up, a $350,000 purchase out of the 2018 Fasig-Tipton July Horse of Racing Age Sale, is a son of the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old filly of 2002, whose dam My Flag (Easy Goer) was–like Storm Flag Flying–won the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Revved Up's third dam is the legendary undefeated Personal Ensign (Private Account). This is also the female family of such worldwide stallions as Traditionally (Mr. Prospector), Miner's Mark (Mr. Prospector), Mr Speaker (Pulpit) and Fire Away.

Revved Up is bred on the extremely productive cross of Candy Ride over Storm Cat responsible for the likes of Horse of the Year Gun Runner and champion Shared Belief, among others.

“We are very excited about having him,” said Francisco Bravo. “He's a really well-bred horse. Candy Ride is a tremendous stallion and so are many of his sons, and the race record and pedigree of Storm Flag Flying speaks for itself. Revved Up had most of his success going long on the turf, but when you look at his bloodlines he should be a versatile stallion and we think he's going to generate a lot of interest among Oklahoma breeders.”

River Oaks also stands Atreides (Medaglia d'Oro), Caleb's Posse (Posse), Excaper (Exchange Rate) and Wilburn (Bernardini).

MHF Launches Capital Campaign

The Maryland Horse Foundation has announced the launch of the Maryland Horse Library and Education Center Capital Campaign, which will honor the history of horses in the state and serve as a hub for learning and collaboration.

“The way [into the horse industry] is through learning, so that's the most exciting aspect of this project,” said Josh Pons, co-chair of the Capital Campaign and president of the Maryland Horse Foundation. “There's someone out there who has a passion for the game but just doesn't know how to get started, and we could be that gateway for people, the portal where people….go 'wow, I met someone really interesting doing research in that library.'”

The campaign seeks to raise $1 million that will be used to update 3500 square feet of space in the Maryland Horse Breeders' Association's building in Reistertown. The funds will also be used to purchase furnishings, integrate current audio/video technologies and support ongoing operational costs.

“We're including all aspects of the industry–horse sports, horse activities–in what we do here and offering that to people who want to come learn,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. “That's the full circle from the founding of Maryland Horse Breeders Association in 1929, and the Maryland Horse Foundation has allowed us to amplify the focus on education.”
