Dominguez Returns As Honorary Chair of AIM Services’ Croquet on the Green

AIM Services, Inc., one of upstate New York's largest providers of support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will hold its eighth annual Croquet on the Green Tournament and Garden Party Aug. 3 at Gavin Park in Wilton, New York. Croquet on the Green Tournament and Garden Party, an outdoor party and amateur croquet tournament with teams of two, is open to all ages, abilities, and skill. Returning this year, is the event's Honorary Chairman, retired Hall of Fame jockey, Ramon Dominguez.

“Among the people who receive services from AIM are those with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs),” said Dominguez. “As a jockey who had to retire early due to a head injury, I know that AIM gives people with TBIs a chance at living their most independent life possible.”

Nearly 54 million people annually experience a traumatic brain injury.

The annual Croquet on the Green event is officially sanctioned through the United States Croquet Association (USCA) and knowledgeable Croquet players will be on hand to guide the game. Croquet on the Green and Garden Party will feature complimentary beer and wine tastings from Specialty Wines & More, an individual picnic style boxed lunch from Deliciously Different Catering, on-site cigar rolling from Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe, beer, soda, and water from Saratoga Eagle, ice cream from Ben &Jerry's, live music, kids activities, special raffles throughout the event and opportunities to meeting members of AIM's community.

The event will be held rain or shine, and reserved seating under the tent will be available, as well as picnic style seating. All attendees will receive a signature picnic blanket to take home.

Gun Runner Gets First Japanese, Turf Winner

5th-Sapporo, ¥13,400,000 ($121,612), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT, 1:09.5, gd.
GRAN APLAUSO (c, 2, Gun Runner–Fiducia {SW & GSP-Jpn, $1,425,976}, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) and his first on the turf with a smooth success on career debut. Drawn widest in a field of 16, the homebred raced deep on the course, but tugged his way up into second entering the turn. Poised to strike at the quarter pole, he was roused to the front outside the 200-meter mark and kept on well to score by a measured length as the 16-5 third betting favorite. Gran Aplauso is the first foal from his dam, a listed winner and narrowly beaten in the G3 Ibis Summer Dash over five furlongs. Fiducia is a daughter of North Hills's Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), Japan's champion older mare of 2003 and winner of the country's two major six-furlong sprints–the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and the Sprinters' S.–before they were recognized as international Group 1 events. Believe's other produce include MSW & MGSP multi-millionaire Faridat (Kingmambo) and GSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy). Third dam Great Christine (Danzig) was a half-sister to Horse of the Year Lady's Secret (Secretariat). Fiducia is the dam of a yearling colt by Uncle Mo and a filly by American Pharoah foaled Jan. 28. Gran Aplauso could be a candidate for the G3 Hakodate Nisai S. July 17. Lifetime Record : 1-1-0-0, 63,636.

Outwork Filly Duels and Draws Off in Fasig-Tipton Debutante

At the Spa dueled early and kept finding late to take the Fasig-Tipton Debutante S. at Santa Anita Sunday and cap a big weekend for breeder and co-owner Terry Lovingier. The Cal-bred aired by seven lengths in Arcadia in open company May 7 and was further flattered when runner-up Munny Penny (Munnings)–also bred and co-owned by Lovinger–returned to romp herself. At the Spa was given a 9-5 second choice chance behind only Florida invader Laurel Canyon and she dueled with that foe from the outset through splits of :22.17 and :46.40 before pulling clear in the final furlong to give her sire Outwork his second stakes winner of the day.

“She pretty much showed how good she was first time out, she fell on her head leaving there and picked herself up to still win easily that day,” said winning jockey Tyler Baze. “Today she had to fight it out a little bit and she prevailed. She's matured so much from the first race, she's just getting better. It's going to be a bright future for her.”

Lovingier, who also bred and co-owns Saturday's Melair S. winner Fi Fi Pharoah (American Pharoah), enjoyed watching his two fillies race down the stretch Sunday.

“It was so exciting watching them come down,” Lovingier said. “Watching two babies that I bred draw off together was very cool. I wasn't sure if the gray filly was going get to her or not. We'll be looking forward to the California-bred races at Del Mar. We've also got a lot more babies coming up, so we will try to get them spotted and maybe some of them will find the open stakes levels too.”

Mr. Big Colt Runs Huge Again in Fasig Futurity

Big City Lights was backed as an overwhelming 1-5 favorite here off a gaudy 93 Beyer Speed Figure-earning debut romp against state-bred foes at Santa Anita May 2 and proved that effort was no fluke with another dominant performance Sunday. Immediately in front, the dark bay made it tight on Street Art (Street Boss) heading to the half-mile pole, forcing jockey Kent Desormeaux to take up sharply. But it was smooth sailing for Big City Lights as he glided through fractions of :21.96 and :45.74 before streaking home much the best. Big City Lights then had to survive an inquiry, with the stewards ultimately ruling Street Art had attempted to make a move with insufficient clearance and letting the original order of finish stand.

“I broke on top and [Street Art] didn't break,” said winning jockey Juan Hernandez. “Before I came over, I checked and didn't see anybody. It looked like he was trying to get in, and there was room, but if you look at the replay it looked like his horse got spooked and didn't want to come through.”

Of Big City Light's big effort, Hernandez said, “This horse is improving a lot. Last time he broke a little slow, but today he broke really sharp and I was clear in front, probably three or four jumps after. I just let my horse run, because that's what he wants. When I asked him at the quarter pole, he took off again, he's a nice horse.”

Trainer Luis Mendez was represented by the top three past the wire.

“It feels good,” Mendez said of the finish. “One-two-three–I've never done that before and especially in a stakes. I want to say thank you to the owner, Bill Peeples, and everyone on the team. Thanks a lot, Mr. John Brocklebank for bringing these babies to the barn. I really don't know what else to say other than I'm really happy.”
