Off at 65 cents on the dollar, the $40,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase was not the quickest away from the inside stall, but was hustled up to grab command moving down the backstretch. Always maintaining a gap on her rivals, Mystic Eyes was under a hand ride into the stretch and proved not for catching. She had 4 1/2 lengths on I'm So Sorry (Uncle Mo) rallied inside for second ahead of late-on-the-scene Mostly Harmless (Violence). A half-sister to Tempers Flair (Smart Strike), the stakes-placed dam of GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and Saudi Derby runner-up Cowan (Kantharos), Mystic Eyes is out of a half-sister to champion Boston Harbor (Capote). Third dam Tinnitus produced champion sprinter Groovy. Cloudburst was most recently bred to Cairo Prince. American Freedom Firster Highly Impressive at Delaware

2nd-Delaware, $39,420, Msw, 8-5, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:04.27, ft, 8 lengths.
DEFEND (c, 2, American Freedom–Fabiana's Flash, by City Zip) became the sixth winner for his first-crop sire (by Pulpit) with a highly impressive debut romp. Sent off right at his morning line of 4-1, the April foal set the pace from favored Mr. Cunningham (Creative Cause), getting the opening quarter mile in a controlled :22.61. Racing well in hand and going extremely well on the turn, Defend came a bit wide into the lane, but was shaken up under a motionless Charlie Marquez ride, was well clear into the final furlong and was never out of a high gallop, scoring by eight lengths. A $16,000 purchase out of last year's OBS October sale, Defend breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 2/5 (see below), but was led out unsold on a bid of $72,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale in May. Produced by a daughter of GSW Flashy N Smart (Smarten), Defend has a yearling half-sister named A Day in Vegas (Uncaptured). Fabiana's Flash was most recently covered by Valiant Minister. Pin Oak Stud to Offer Remaining Stock at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky

Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud, one of the country's most successful Thoroughbred breeding and racing operations over the past six decades, will be offering its remaining broodmares, weanlings, and some racing fillies at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Sept. 12. Denali Stud will handle the sale as agent for Pin Oak.

Separate from this main group are 14 yearlings which will be offered in the upcoming Keeneland September Sale and an additional yearling entered to sell at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Sale. Some 14 retired mares and horses will remain on the farm.

“This has been part of Ms. Abercrombie's plan all along, as we have been selling mares and downsizing the past few years,” farm manager Clifford Barry said. “Actually, in keeping to her plan, we have sold more yearlings than we kept in training the past couple of years.”

Among the 24 horses being offered in September are graded stakes winners Overheard (Macho Uno), in foal to McKinzie; Gold Medal Dancer (Medaglia d'Oro), in foal to Munnings; and Don't Leave Me (Lemon Drop Kid), in foal to Authentic. The 2021 foals out of these mares and others are also part of the sale on Sept.12.

I've always considered it a compliment to have the Denali Stud name associated with Pin Oak and Josephine Abercrombie. Recognized as the 1995 National Thoroughbred Breeder of the Year, Pin Oak Stud has produced or campaigned over 100 stakes winners. Prominent homebreds to carry the distinct blue-and-gray striped silks include Peaks and Valleys, Broken Vow, Confessional, See How She Runs, Hasten to Add, Laugh and Be Merry, and Missed the Storm.

An active supporter of the racing industry as well as her community, Ms. Abercrombie has been honored with the William T. Young Humanitarian Award and the Hardboot Award, both presented by the KTA/KTOB. In 2018, Ms. Abercrombie received one of the industry's most prestigious awards when she was named the Thoroughbred Club of America Honor Guest.

Mr. Big Relocated to Legacy Ranch

Successful California-bred sire Mr. Big (Dynaformer–Fashion Delight, by Fappiano) has been relocated to Pete and Evelyn Parrella's Legacy Ranch in Clements, Ca. He most recently stood at Rancho Temescal in Piru, Ca. for a $4,500 fee. His 2022 stud fee will be announced at a later date.

“We thoroughly enjoyed standing Mr. Big at Rancho Temescal and watching his foals find great success in 2021,” stated Tim Cohen President of Rancho Temescal. “We have decided to stop breeding and foaling going forward, Rancho Temescal will continue to provide care for all our clients, while leaving the niche of breeding and foaling to larger farms in California. We will continue to support Mr. Big at Legacy Ranch.”

“Myself and my staff led by farm manager Terry Knight look forward to the 2022 breeding season with Mr. Big added to our stallion roster that also includes leading sire Clubhouse Ride and the hot freshman sire Straight Fire,” added Pete Parrella.
