Lukas and Romans to Meet for Public Talk at Ellis

Ellis Park will host “a conversation” between Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and Eclipse Award-winning trainer Dale Romans Saturday, Aug. 14. Called “D. Wayne and Dale: A Conversation,” the event will see the two charismatic personalities interview each other, tell stories, and take questions from the public. Third generation Henderson horseman John Hancock will introduce the pair.

“We wanted something special for the public as a prelude to Ellis Park Derby Day,” said Jeff Inman, Ellis Park's general manager. “Wayne is on the short list for the all-time great trainers, and we're fortunate that for the first time he's stabled with us this summer. We want our fans to get the chance to not just see him saddling a horse or in the winner's circle, but really up close and personal. The same is true with Dale.”

The conversation will take place at 11 a.m. CT in the Ellis Park beer garden pavilion. Admission is free. Commemorative postcards will be available for fans to get autographs, with donations accepted to benefit Second Stride.

Gov. Murphy Signs Bill Approving Fixed Odds at Monmouth

Fixed Odds wagering will be available at Monmouth Park in the coming weeks after Gov. Philip Murphy signed legislation Thursday approving the new bet, with implementation awaiting regulatory approval from the New Jersey Racing Commission and the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Monmouth Park, working in conjunction with BetMakers Technology Group, will be the first racetrack in the country to offer Fixed Odds wagering, a popular bet in Europe and Australia.

“We appreciate the continued support from Gov. Murphy and the state legislature, as well as Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Senate President Steve Sweeney, in advancing Fixed Odds wagering,” said Dennis Drazin, Chairman and CEO of Darby Development LLC, the operator of Monmouth Park. “It provides our patrons with another wagering option that we firmly believe will be a popular one.”

The bill was co-sponsored by state assemblymen Ronald S. Dancer and Ralph R. Caputo and state senators Vin Gopal and Paul A. Sarlo.

Fixed Odds wagering allows bettors to retain the odds at the time of their bet, as opposed to pari-mutuel wagering, where odds are not finalized until betting is completed.

When it is available at Monmouth Park, Fixed Odds will be offered on win, place and show betting at the outset, with a minimum wager of $1. There will be designated Fixed Odds windows throughout the Grandstand and Clubhouse, with televisions displaying the current Fixed Odds.

Monmouth Park will also show the Fixed Odds for each race during the track's in-house televised feed of races.

Fixed Odds wagering will begin with Monmouth Park races, with the expectation that it will expand to other tracks that enter into an agreement to permit Fixed Odds wagering on their races.

Pennsylvania-Bred Stakes Schedule Receives a Boost

The Pennsylvania-bred stakes schedule received a major boost for the remainder of the year, with four stakes doubling in value to $200,000, plus the addition of two $100,000 stakes. A total of $2.6 million in purses will now be paid out in restricted, state-bred stakes in 2021.

“Our revenue has stabilized and the Race Horse Development Trust Fund has stood strong,” Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association's executive secretary Brian Sanfratello said. “We wanted to send a message that Pennsylvania is on the move and the premier place to breed and race.”

Purses have been increased for the year-end 2-year-old stakes, the Shamrock Rose for fillies at Penn National Nov. 26 and the Pennsylvania Nursery at Parx Racing Dec. 7, as well as the Alphabet Soup and Plum Pretty for older runners on Parx Racing's rich Sept. 25 Pennsylvania Derby card. Returning to the schedule are two six-furlong 3-year-old stakes cut earlier in the year–the New Start for fillies, and the Danzig–both to run at Penn National Oct. 22.

Elizabeth Merryman, chair of the PHBA racing committee, says the increases come at an opportune time.

“We're making up for last year,” she explained, noting the reductions to the PHBA Breeding Fund due to COVID-19, as well as attempts by the governor to alter the Fund, which have since been resolved. “Now that things have gotten much more stabilized, it's great that we can add stakes and put big purses on the 2-year-old stakes at the right time of the year, where they can catch the attention of people making buying decisions at the sales. Buyers are going to look closer at the PA-breds, which helps the breeders.

She continued, “We're giving away substantial sums of money and the program is getting bigger and stronger. It helps the breeders by advertising the program.”
