Amussen Ties Baird, Has 14 in Saturday

With a perfect two-for-two day Friday, Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen picked up career wins 9,444 and 9,445. That moved him into a tie with Dale Baird, the King of Waterford Park, for the most wins of all-time by a North American-based trainer.

Asmussen began his day with a win at Saratoga, taking home the honors in the fourth race with Jalen Journey (With Distinction), who was sent off at 3-1 in the allowance/optional claimer. About 1 hour and 45 minutes later and about 940 miles southwest of Saratoga, the trainer drew even with Baird when Shanghai's Dream (Shanghai Bobby) won a $30,000 claimer at Ellis Park. The colt was 2-1 and closed from last to win by three-quarters of a length under Rafael Bejarano.

“That's how I feel about it, it was meant to be,” Asmussen told the Ellis notes team. “Unbelievably significant win to me and the family. To be able to share the lead-up, getting close, all of the unbelievable support I've had and the well wishes, to be able to get to 9,445-which we've strived for quite some time—to be surrounded by family, what could be better?”

Asmussen spent the day in Saratoga and these were his only two starters on the afternoon. Barring what would be nothing less than an extraordinarily bad day from one of the sport's most consistent barns, the record will fall on Saturday. Asmussen has 14 horses entered on the day in 13 races at four tracks.

He may, however, have to wait until later in the day to get the record. His first entrant is Under the Gun (Gun Runner) in the first at Saratoga, but the horse is entered for main track only. His next starters will come in the fifth at Saratoga, where he has two entered. The race is a seven-furlong maiden special weight for 2-year-olds and his starters are Vodka Mardini (Bernardini) and Stellar Tap (Tapit). Both are first-time starters. Stellar Tap is 5-1 in the morning line and Vodka Mardini is 8-1.

From there, it will get very busy. He will send out Classical Romance (Classic Empire) in a maiden special weight race at Monmouth for 2-year-old fillies. Next up will be the first at Louisiana Downs, where the Asmussen-trained Policy Limit (Bradester) is the 2-1 favorite in the line in the $5,000 claimer. From 4 pm (ET) on, he will have nine starters, one at Louisiana Downs, three at Saratoga, three at Ellis Park and two more at Monmouth Park. His starters include Silver State (Hard Spun), who will take a six-race winning streak into the GI Whitney S. at Saratoga.

When the record falls, it will come in Asmussen's 36th year as a trainer. He started slowly, going just 1-for-15 in his first year, 1986. His first winner of his career came with in a July 19, 1986 race at Ruidoso Downs that had a purse of $2,600. His father, Keith, was aboard that day for the win.

Baird's career ended in 2007 when he died in an automobile accident.  Asmussen still trails Peruvian-trainer Juan Suarez, who, as of Aug. 5, had 9,897 winners.

Martin Panza to Leave NYRA

Martin Panza will leave his position as Senior Vice President of Racing Operations at the New York Racing Association (NYRA) effective at the conclusion of the Belmont Park fall meet Oct. 31. Panza has been in charge of the leadership and oversight of racing functions at NYRA since he joined the organization in 2013. He has also been responsible for the overall development, planning, and execution of NYRA's stakes offerings and daily racing programs, including changing the scheduling of major stakes on individual days to blockbuster events featuring multiple significant races. The strategy has resulted in deep cards for Travers and Whitney days at Saratoga Race Course and the three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and Stars and Stripes Racing Festival at Belmont Park. Panza was also instrumental in the creation of the Turf Triple Series, which is a 3-year-old turf program emulating the American dirt Classics.

“Martin has successfully maintained the history and traditions of New York racing while also modernizing the program to adapt to changes in the sport and the overall industry,” said NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke. “His contributions have strengthened Thoroughbred racing here in New York and across our sport. During his tenure, Martin has established a talented racing office team that will serve as the foundation for continued success. We extend our thanks to Martin for his years of service to NYRA and wish him the best as he enters a new phase in his career.”

During his time at NYRA, Panza played a leading role in the formation of a coalition of leading Thoroughbred racing associations and organizations committed to phasing out the use of Lasix. NYRA and its coalition partners eliminated the use of Lasix in all 2-year-old races in 2020, followed by all stakes races in 2021. As a direct result, all three Triple Crown races are now contested without the use of raceday medication.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at NYRA and the NYRA Board of Directors for their dedication to this organization and the sport, which has allowed us to innovate together to enhance NYRA's world class racing product,” said Panza. “I'd also like to thank the horsemen, jockeys, and horseplayers who support our racing on a daily basis throughout the year.”

Panza is on the board of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), the Racetrack Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC), and the Thoroughbred Racing Association (TRA). He also serves on the advisory board of the University of Arizona Racetrack Industry Program (RTIP). In addition, Panza has served on a number of racing committees, including the American Graded Stakes Committee, the Breeders' Cup Selection Committee, and the North American Ratings Committee. Panza also served as chair of the NTRA Safety Committee, which established the NTRA Code of Safety Standards. NYRA was also a founding member of the Thoroughbred Safety Coalition under Panza's leadership.

Over the eight years of Panza's tenure at NYRA, the organization has embarked on a sustained effort to recruit prominent international horses and trainers to compete on the New York circuit. This initiative, led by Panza, has generated an increase in global interest in NYRA and strengthened the foundation of New York racing.

“I've been lucky to have learned the craft from some of the best in the business,” Panza added. “It's a responsibility to share that knowledge with the next generation, and I look forward to watching the NYRA racing office flourish and succeed for many years to come.”

Champion Jockeys Featured in NY Chaplaincy Roundtable

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy (NYRTCA) will host a 2021 edition of a roundtable discussion featuring retired riders Ángel Cordero, Jr., Chris McCarron, Richard Migliore, and Jorge Velásquez on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. ET. Entitled “Champions Talk,” the event will be moderated by retired NYRA announcer Tom Durkin and will be shown on TDN's YouTube channel, the NYRTCA's YouTube channel, and Facebook live @race.ny, as well as in other locations.

The conversation, which ranges from the serious to the humorous, will primarily be reflections about the riding careers of the four jockeys who collectively won more than 25,000 races. It was recorded at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga sales pavilion in late July with approximately 150 attendees. In addition, current rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. was honored for his support of the NY Chaplaincy.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who attended, contributed, or participated in this unique event,” said Humberto Chavez, the NYRTCA executive director and lead chaplain. “They all helped raise much-needed funds that will improve the quality of life for our backstretch community.”

The discussion was produced by the Patty Wolfe Media Group. For more information or to make a contribution, visit www.rtcany.org or contact Eleanor Poppe at info@rtcany.org.
