Thoroughbred Owner Conference Series ‘Buying at Public Auction’ Now Online

The seventh panel of the OwnerView Virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference held Tuesday, Aug. 15, is now online, the organization said in a release early Thursday.

The session featured bloodstock agents Erin Birkenhauer, Marette Farrell and Mike Ryan, plus auctioneer Tom Biederman discussing horse selection and the bidding process at Thoroughbred auctions. The panel was moderated by OwnerView's project manager, Gary Falter.

Topics included yearling sales, buying 2-year-olds, buying horses in training, the importance of vet records and conformation.

“For people getting into the business for the first time, a great approach is to buy some fillies because you have some exit strategy, you've got resale/residual value,” Ryan said.

There are four more Thoroughbred Owner Conference virtual panels scheduled for 2023, with the next session, 'Claiming', to be held Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. (ET).

Clark Named Thoroughbred Owner Conference Keynote Speaker

Stacie Clark, operations consultant for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), will be the keynote speaker for OwnerView's in-person Thoroughbred Owner Conferenceat Saratoga Race Course July 25-26, 2022.

Clark has been with the TAA since its inception in 2012 and assumed the role of operations consultant in 2014. Previously, she created the first in-house retirement program while serving as Thoroughbred Retirement Program manager at Adena Springs.

Clark rode as a jockey in Ontario and was nominated for the 1994 Sovereign Award as Outstanding Apprentice in Canada. When Woodbine Racetrack expanded its television department in 1999, she crossed over to associate producer and racing television commentator.

Clark will provide her perspective on the evolution of aftercare from the early 2000s to today, highlight the progress made by the industry, and discuss future challenges.

“Thoroughbred aftercare has moved to the forefront of industry priorities in the last 20 years or so, and Stacie has been one of the great influencers in moving the needle in this area, including participating in previous Thoroughbred Owner Conferences,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “In both our in-person and virtual conferences, OwnerView has emphasized the importance of aftercare as part of a stable's business plan, and we are excited to have Stacie joining us as our keynote to talk about this important topic.”

TOC Series Goes Virtual in 2021

The 2021 Thoroughbred Owners Conference will be held as a series of free virtual panels, OwnerView announced Tuesday. Hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton, and Stoll Keenon Ogden, the conference series will be held the first Tuesday of each month starting Mar. 2.

“This new format for 2021 enables us to offer informative, educational and enjoyable panels on Thoroughbred ownership to anyone interested from the convenience of wherever they happen to be,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “Each month’s conference will cover a topic that is relevant to Thoroughbred ownership and, when possible, coincides with what is happening in the Thoroughbred industry at that time of year.”

The first panel of the series, sponsored by Keeneland, will cover the economics of racehorse ownership. Panelists are George Bolton, owner; Maggi Moss, owner; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, tax director, Dean Dorton. The panel will be moderated by Mike Penna of Horse Racing Radio Network.

OwnerView Conference Moved to Ky, Breeders’ Cup Week

OwnerView’s seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference, originally scheduled to be held July 19-22 in Saratoga Springs, NY, has been rescheduled and will be held in Lexington, Ky., from Nov. 2-5, to coincide with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The Breeders’ Cup will be held Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland.

“While we were disappointed that we were unable to host this year’s Thoroughbred Owner Conference in Saratoga Springs, we are delighted to be able to bring the owner conference back to Lexington, the ‘Horse Capital of the World,’ during the week of the Breeders’ Cup,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView.” We are thankful for the support and flexibility of the New York Racing Association and the Breeders’ Cup.”

The rescheduled owner conference will be held at the Embassy Suites on Newtown Pike in Lexington. The conference agenda includes nine panels on topics, including the economics of racehorse ownership, syndicates, safety reforms, aftercare, and diversity. The conference will open Monday, Nov. 2, with an evening reception at The Kentucky Castle. Other social events include a conference dinner at the Fasig-Tipton sales grounds and tours of the region’s stallion farms.

This year’s owner conference will offer a new registration option for virtual attendance, which will allow registrants access to all panels and the ability to participate in question and answer sessions for those panels.

For guests who attend the owner conference in person, social-distancing protocols will be in place, including limiting the number of guests seated at tables and increased spacing of tables. OwnerView will continually monitor the status of COVID-19 and if an in-person conference is deemed unsafe, in-person registrations will be refunded or converted to a virtual registration.
