Ten Stakes Races Highlight Fall Meet At Golden Gate Fields

The 25-day fall meet at Golden Gate Fields commences this Friday, Oct. 22, and runs through Sunday, Dec. 12. A total of ten stakes races will be offered at the upcoming 8-week meeting.

Next Saturday, the one-mile, $75,000 Pike Place Dancer for 2-year-old turf fillies kicks off the stake action. On Sunday, main-track sprinters take center stage in the feature race of the day, the $75,000 El Dorado Shooter.

The El Dorado Shooter is one of two stakes at the fall meet restricted solely for California-bred or sired runners. The other, the $75,000 Bear Fan, is slated for Saturday, Dec. 11. Both California-bred stakes will be run at six furlongs on the Tapeta main track, with the El Dorado Shooter for 3-year-olds and up and the Bear Fan for fillies and mares.

Any “older horses” (3-year-olds and upward) game to take on stakes company can enter in a pair of races in November. On Saturday, Nov. 6, the marquee event of the afternoon is the Joseph T. Grace, run at one mile and a sixteenth on turf. On Saturday, Nov. 27, the $100,000 Grade 3 Berkeley Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth on Tapeta goes as the signature race of the fall meet.

Two-year-olds will be given opportunities to shine on the Tapeta throughout the fall. The Golden Nugget, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, is a six-furlong sprint. On Saturday, Dec. 4, the $75,000 Gold Rush at one mile will attract youngsters who wish to stretch out in distance. Two-year-old fillies play their hand sprinting on Friday, Nov. 26 in the $50,000 Golden Gate Debutante at six furlongs.

Other stakes on the schedule include the $50,000 Oakland for 3-year-olds and upward at six furlongs and the Miss America Stakes on Closing Day Sunday, Dec. 12 for filly and mare turf routers.

KET Showcases Thoroughbred Industry Jobs In Careers In Demand Series

To help address Kentucky's ever-changing workforce demands, KET has created a new video and accompanying resources that showcase Kentucky's thoroughbred industry and provide information for those who might wish to pursue a career in the field.

Developed with the help of the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP), the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Workforce Center, and The Race for Education, the video and supplementary resources—part of KET's In Demand series—offer a roadmap of potential career pathways in the horse industry and include helpful tips on getting started, whether through internships, apprenticeships, or a state university or college program.

Additionally, the resources offer an overview of thoroughbred jobs, including detailed descriptions of the work expectations, employee qualifications and average annual salary ranges.

“The thoroughbred industry is looking for qualified and dedicated employees who have a passion for the industry,” said Laurie Mays, the Equine Talent Pipeline Management program manager with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Workforce Center. “For those with horsemanship abilities, there are hands-on positions that work directly with horses. But there are positions in other areas as well, everything from landscaping and maintenance to finance and office work. There really is something for everyone in the industry.”

Generating $6.5 billion annually, Kentucky's thoroughbred industry is a cornerstone of the state's economy. Kentucky is home to some 54,000 thoroughbreds and leads all states in annual thoroughbred breeding, accounting for more than half of all mares bred in North America in 2019, according to Bloodhorse.com.

“Even at a time when it is successfully growing, the horse industry has faced labor shortages,” said Elisabeth Jensen, executive vice president of the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP), a nonprofit agency that supports the Commonwealth's horse industry. “Nearly 80,000 Kentuckians work within the industry, and we want to introduce these jobs and careers to a new generation of Kentuckians who will build on this current success and ensure that we remain Kentucky's signature industry.”

KET's In Demand series, which initially debuted in 2019 in a partnership with the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC), highlights career pathways in Kentucky's fastest growing industry sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, business & IT, construction, transportation & logistics, and healthcare. The series is designed to help job seekers get the information they need as they transition to new employment.

“As with all our educational materials, KET strives to support learners of all ages as they work toward their future careers,” said Tonya Crum, KET's senior director of education. “This series provides a glimpse of what working in the thoroughbred industry is like and also furnishes useful data to aid in the decision-making process. And raising awareness of various jobs in Kentucky ultimately helps job seekers choose a path that matches their interests.”

202 Live Race Dates Approved For NYRA Tracks In 2022

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today released its 2022 racing calendar, which calls for 202 live race days at Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack and Saratoga Race Course.

The 2021-22 Aqueduct winter meet will run from Thursday, Dec. 9 through Sunday, March 27 with live racing generally conducted four days per week in January and February and three days per week in March.

The 15-day Aqueduct spring meet will open on Thursday March 31 and conclude on Sunday, April 24. Live racing will be conducted Thursday-Sunday during the 2022 spring meet at the Big A.

Highlighted by the 154th running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on June 11, the 44-day Belmont spring/summer meet opens on Thursday, April 28, and will continue through Sunday, July 10. Live racing will generally be conducted Thursday-Sunday during the spring meet at Belmont with the exception of Memorial Day weekend and July 4th weekend, when live racing will be conducted Friday-Monday.

The 40-day summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will again serve as the anchor for a spectacular year of racing on the NYRA circuit. The summer meet, featuring the 95th running of the Grade 1 Whitney and the 153rd edition of the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers, will open on Thursday, July 14 and conclude on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5.

Following the four-day opening weekend from Thursday, July 14 through Sunday, July 17, racing at Saratoga will be conducted five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays, with the exception of the final week, when the meet will conclude on Labor Day.

The 28-day Belmont Park fall meet will begin on Thursday, Sept. 15 and run through Sunday, Oct. 30. Live racing will be conducted Thursday-Sunday during the 2022 fall meet at Belmont.

Following the conclusion of the Belmont fall meet, live racing will return to the Big A for an 18-day fall meet from Friday, Nov. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 4. Live racing will be conducted Thursday-Sunday during the 2022 fall meet at Aqueduct.

The Aqueduct winter meet begins on Thursday, Dec. 15 – and following a 10-day holiday break from Dec. 19 through Dec. 28 – the 2022 schedule concludes Saturday, Dec. 31.
