Opening Fee Of 25,000 For State Of Rest As Rathbarry Reveals Line-Up

Four-time Group 1 winner State Of Rest will stand for €25,000 in his debut season at Rathbarry Stud. He will also cover in the southern hemisphere at Henry Field's Newgate Stud. 

The Starspangledbanner (Aus) colt, who was bred by Tinnakill Bloodstock, won three Group/Grade 1 contests in as many different continents under the management of Joseph O'Brien. 

State Of Rest opened his account at the highest level when storming to Saratoga Derby glory in New York last year. He confirmed his reputation as a globetrotting superstar when taking the Cox Plate as a three-year-old.

Closer to home, he returned as a four-year-old to win the Prix Ganay at ParisLongchamp before beating Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) in the Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot. 

The five-time winner has been introduced at just €2,500 less than Acclamation (GB), who will lead the way at the County Cork stud once again at €27,500.

The son of Royal Applause (GB) has been a fantastic servant at Rathbarry Stud and has produced a number of high-class horses, including Dark Angel (Ire), Mehmas (Ire) Aclaim (Ire), Expert Eye (GB) and Equiano (Fr).

Heading the supporting cast is Kodi Bear (Ire), who will command the same fee as last year at €15,000, while James Garfield will stand for €4,000.

Magical Lagoon Faces Japan’s Best Females in QE II

Some eleven years have transpired since the great Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) carried Ryan Moore to a second consecutive victory in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup and it will be up to reigning G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks winner Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to put a halt to the locals' 10-race winning streak Sunday afternoon at Hanshin Racecourse.

It has been a magical season, indeed, for Yuesheng Zhang's talented bay filly, who used a runner-up effort in the Listed Salsabil S. at Navan in late April as a springboard to an 11-4 success in the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot in June. The Tattersalls October graduate, trained by Jessica Harrington, got the better of a final-furlong tussle with Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to take out the Irish Oaks July 16 (video) and fought out the fractions in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks last time Aug. 18 only to fade into fifth behind future G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), recent winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

 

 

 

While G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) winner Stars on Earth (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) misses this, the season's Classic form is strongly represented. Namur (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) defeated Pin High (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}) in Group 2 company in March, but was a disappointing 10th in the G1 Oka Sho the following month. An improved third in the Oaks, she exits a runner-up effort behind perfect-trip Stunning Rose (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) in the G1 Shuka Sho Oct. 16 (video), in which Stars on Earth was desperately unlucky to lose her Triple Crown bid.

“She is still a young horse and there should be more to come from her,” said trainer Tomokazu Takano. “With just three weeks between races, we've been careful with her, giving her slow canters and checking how she takes the bit when running uphill. She was third in the Japanese Oaks, so the distance should be good this time.”

 

 

Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) won the 2020 Oaks, but her career has been a bit stop-start since. A good third to Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in Hong Kong's G1 FWD QE II Cup in 2021, the 5-year-old has made just three starts since, her best outcome a sound third behind Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen in June. She was most recently beaten into sixth as the favorite behind the immaculately bred Geraldina (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}–Gentildonna {Jpn}) in the G2 All Comers S. Sept. 25.

Moore is in Japan on a short-term contract following his Breeders' Cup three-timer last weekend. He takes the reins aboard the Classic-placed 4-year-old filly Andvaranaut (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}).

Yeomanstown’s Star Sire Dark Angel Stays at 60k

Leading sire Dark Angel (Ire) will remain at €60,000 for 2023 as Yeomanstown Stud released fee details on Friday. 

Battaash (Ire) and Harry Angel (Ire) flew the flag for Dark Angel at the highest level in recent seasons and the 17-year-old broke new ground with French Classic scorer Mangoustine (Fr) this term. 

First-season sire Invincible Army (Ire) remains at €7,500 while Supremacy (Ire) has been dropped to €10,000 from €12,500. Shaman's (Ire) first foals sell this autumn and he remains at €5,000.

Gay O'Callaghan said, “Dark Angel has had another sensational year at stud, proving himself once again as the Group 1 champion sprinter-miler sire for the third consecutive year and a champion two-year-old sire. 

“He is now the sire of 13 individual Group 1 winners, including his Classic-winning daughter Mangoustine, a decisive winner of  the Poule d'Essaie des Pouliches.”

“It's been exciting watching Invincible Army's yearlings sell this autumn. The exceptional son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) was a Group winner at two, three and four and his progeny have been well supported in the sales ring by trainers, agents, and owners alike who were impressed by the excellent quality of his stock which share his attributes of strength and class. In total he had 57 yearlings sold at auction for an average of €57,680.”

He added, “We look forward to the first foals of Supremacy to be born this spring.  As a Group 1-winning son of champion sire Mehmas (Ire), he is an exciting prospect and a wonderful-looking individual who showed a high level of ability and toughness on the track.  

“Shaman had his first foals in 2022 and produced an exceptional first crop, so we are looking forward to seeing them in the sales ring this winter.”

Ardad Heads Overbury Roster As Golden Horn Set At 8k

Ardad (GB), the sire of G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Perfect Power (Ire), will head the Overbury Stud roster at an unchanged £12,500 while new recruit Golden Horn (GB) has been set at £8,000. 

The brilliant G1 Derby winner and European Horse of the Year in 2015, Golden Horn joined Overbury Stud in July after being sold to new investors from Darley and Anthony Oppenheimer.

He will stand alongside 2015 Irish Derby hero Jack Hobbs (GB), whose fee has not been decided upon, and Frontiersman (GB), who will once again stand for just £1,000. Also on the Overbury team is Schiaparelli (Ger) at £2,000.

Overbury Stud's manager Simon Sweeting said, “I think we've got stallions for most ambitions and most tastes–certainly they are all showing they can sire horses you'd be proud to have bred. 

“We're really looking forward to talking to breeders about their mares and we'll be doing our best for them in the season ahead. I hope we can have as lucky a run in 2023 as we've had in the past year or two.”
