First Stakes Winner For Dubai Turf Hero Real Steel, As All Parfait Rises To The Top At Hanshin

All Parfait (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) made it back-to-back victories with a half-length triumph in the 1600-metre G2 Daily Hai Nisai S. at Hanshin on Saturday. Second was race favourite Danon Touchdown (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), who left the gates at 5-2.

The first stakes-winner for his 2016 G1 Dubai Turf-winning sire, the 2-year-old colt broke in the centre of the course from gate 10 and sped up to take command inside the first 100 metres. Hard on the steel, he covered his first 600 metres in :35.30. He soon came under pressure from Shomon (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits), but remained a neck in front with 600 metres to travel. Asked for his run in early stretch, the bay lengthened away to a several-length advantage. All Parfait pegged back Danon Touchdown to score, with the latter rallying dramatically from last to just miss. It was a length back to a game Shomon in third.

All Parfait ran second versus newcomers when unveiled over a mile at Tokyo on June 4 and was promptly shelved. He returned over that trip to take a Nakayama maiden on Oct. 2 and was 4-1 on Saturday.

Pedigree Notes

The dual Classic-placed Real Steel (Jpn) has 113 juveniles in his first crop. Fifty-three of his progeny have raced, 13 have won, and All Parfait is his first stakes and group winner.

Unraced as a juvenile, Queen Grace (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) scored both of her victories at three over 2000 metres on firm turf at Nakayama on debut and in her career finale at the same course going a mile. All Parfait is her first foal, and she has since produced the yearling colt Glory One (Jpn) (World Ace {Jpn}) and a Kizuna (Jpn) filly of this year foaled on May 4.

Second dam was the winning Pikes Peak (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}), while All Parfait's third dam was the GII La Prevoyante H. and GIII Glens Falls H. heroine Arvada (GB) (Hernando {Fr}). Knocked down to Shadai Farm for $800,000 in foal to Empire Maker at the 2005 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, the G1 Prix Saint-Alary third would go on to produce 11 foals in Japan, for 11 runners and eight winners.

Goffs Chief Henry Beeby: ‘This Is A Sale People Cannot Afford To Miss’

It was at the November Foal Sale at Goffs in 2015 when Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) shot the lights out at €1.1 million and the wheel will turn full circle this week with the Kildangan Stud-based sire represented by 14 foals in what promises to be another high-class edition.

The sale takes place from Monday, November 14 at 10am to Thursday, November 17 and will be immediately followed by the two-day November Breeding Stock Sale.

It was at that sale when Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) was sold for €6.6 million and Goffs chief Henry Beeby is looking forward to what he thinks will be another productive week.

He said, “The Goffs November Foal Sale is the preferred choice for the majority of the foals who come to the market in Ireland. We have the cream of the Irish foal crop and there are some very special pedigrees in there. It's a very big and exciting entry.

“Anyone who is interested in buying a foal, be they pinhookers or end users, they will be here at Goffs. We're looking forward to it.”

Asked what he is most excited about at the foal sale, Beeby added, “There's a Kingman (GB) half-brother to Skitter Scatter, the Teofilo (Ire) half-sister to Dawn Approach (Ire), the Churchill (Ire) half-brother to Sonnyboyliston (Ire) and the own brother to Sea The Moon (Ger).

“There's also a Sea The Stars (Ire) brother to Sea Of Class (Ire), a couple of Wootton Bassetts (GB) and a half-brother to Arrest (Ire). You could go on and on. There are so many commercial sires in there and this is a very successful sale for pinhookers. Everyone comes here with fresh order books as this is the first major foal sale and we have something for everybody.

“The days are graded. Monday and Wednesday would be at the commercial end and Tuesday takes a step up. Thursday is when the real blue bloods will be sold.”

Along with Ghaiyyath, Arizona (Ire), Circus Maximus (Ire), Earthlight (Ire), Far Above (Ire), King Of Change (GB), Shaman (Ire) and Sottsass (Fr) are just a number of the stallions represented by their first crop of foals at the sale. But it's not just the first-season sires that Beeby is looking forward to.

He said, “We have seen a fair few of the foals by first-season sires and are guided by the breeder. We will start looking at them in more detail alongside the buyers from Saturday onwards. It's from Saturday when the excitement really starts to build.

“It's always fascinating to see the first crop of sires that you were familiar with on the racetrack. We've the last Galileo (Ire) foal being offered at public auction and the first-season sires. The great thing about the November Foal Sale is that it is all about potential.”

The major talking point from the Orby and Sportsman's Yearling Sales at Goffs last month was the presence of international buyers. While the foal sales are predominantly attended by a domestic market, Beeby is expecting international players to turn out in force.

He said, “One of our most famous lines is, 'Goffs is the gateway to the world for Irish breeders.' Of course, the biggest group of buyers at this sale will be the Irish pinhookers. The majority of the buyers don't have to travel very far and they certainly don't have to get on a plane. But we will have a lot of British-based pinhookers and we will have a fair few French, European, Scandinavian and American buyers as well. We have some Japanese buyers engaged and some will be bidding online. It will be another international gathering, that's for sure.”

Chicquita may be the poster girl of the November Breeding Stock Sale but top-class producers have gone through the ring at Goffs in recent seasons.

Beeby explained, “This sale has really punched above its weight. As per all of our marketing, the fact that we have had the dams of Saffron Beach (Ire), Blackbeard (Ire), Little Big Bear (Ire) and Alcohol Free (Ire) come out of this sale says a lot. Ghaiyyath and Alcohol Free were also sold here as well. We can go to people and say, 'look what you can get here.'

“We probably don't have another Chicquita this year but we have a really good bunch who will appeal to an international audience. If there are breeders looking to invest in broodmares, this is a sale they simply cannot afford to miss.”

Desert Berry A Rare Jewel in the Sceptre Sessions

An extremely rare opportunity will be presented during the Sceptre Sessions of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale when Desert Berry (GB) (Green Desert), the dam of this year's G1 Derby winner Desert Crown (GB), is offered for sale back in foal to Nathaniel (Ire), the sire of the Classic hero.

When Desert Crown passed the line in front at Epsom, he fulfilled a lifetime dream for breeder Gary Robinson of Newmarket's Strawberry Fields Stud, who will offer the 13-year-old Desert Berry as lot 1891 on Tuesday evening of the sale.

“She's a beautiful mare, she's the right age and she's carrying a full-sibling to the Derby winner,” he says. “So this is it: the best chance anybody's ever going to get to buy another Derby winner.”

Desert Berry first came into Robinson's possession as a foal, but he also owns her dam, the Juddmonte-bred Foreign Language (Distant View), as well as Rose Berry (GB) (Archipenko), a six-time winner and half-sister to Desert Crown who is also now in foal to Nathaniel. With younger members of the family also in his possession, including Desert Berry's 2-year-old daughter by Al Kazeem (GB) and yearling colt by Study Of Man (Ire), Strawberry Fields is well stocked with this Classic family.

“She's from a Juddmonte family originally,” says Robinson of Desert Berry, whose relations include the Group 1 winners Proviso (GB) and Byword (GB).

“I bought her as a foal at Tattersalls many years ago with the first four base mares that we had, and she is the last of those base mares.”

Desert Berry certainly has established a strong foundation for Robinson. All five of her foals to have raced are multiple winners. Successive matings with the late Lanwades resident Archipenko produced not just Rose Berry but also the Hong Kong Group 3 winner Flying Thunder (GB), who raced in Britain as Archie McKellar, winning for Ralph Beckett before moving to Frankie Lor.

“Unfortunately Archipenko is gone, but she is a nice mare and Nathaniel was perfect for her,” says Robinson. “She's bred a Derby winner now and that's put us on the map. And we've got all the family to go further with.

“I've got the yearling half-brother here and a daughter by Al Kazeem who is in pre-training as well.”

Robinson describes Desert Berry as an “alpha mare” and he adds, “She's an individual, she's different but she is kind. And she's got a beautiful action.”

He says of his decision to offer her for sale, “Sometimes you have to let things go. At the end of the day, this is a business, so we have to make money to go on again. We're building more new stables…and then we've also created a racing yard, so we've got that as a back-up as well. It's been a big investment and sometimes we have to sell things. This is a great opportunity now to reinvest the money into the stud, but we have the family and I'm quite sure they're going to be successful for a while.”

While Desert Crown will always be first and foremost remembered as a Derby winner, Robinson says that it was the colt's easy victory in the G2 Dante S. for his owner Saeed Suhail and trainer Sir Michael Stoute that lingers most in his mind.

“For me, the Dante was the race where I saw a wonderful walking horse and athlete, and that really that made it for me more than anything, just to have produced a wonderful horse,” he says.

Indeed, Desert Crown's physical attributes were clearly obvious from an early age, as he sold for 280,000gns to Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock when offered as a yearling at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October sale in 2020. And there could well be more high days to come for the colt, who has recently returned to training at Stoute's Freemason Lodge in Newmarket.

Robinson says, “Desert Crown is doing really well now, so he'll be ready and they're really excited about him for next year. They're going to go places with him. It's good, it shows that the horses the mare produces are progressive.”
