Dawson and Kearney are New Owners of the Year

Richard Dawson and Pat Kearney, the owners of GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice) and MGSW Kathleen O. (Upstart), respectively, have been named joint New Owners of the Year by OwnerView. The award is sponsored by 1/ST RACING.

Dawson, who races as Red TR Racing, purchased his first horse in 2019 and currently only has two horses in training, including Rich Strike, who was last seen finishing fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 5 and is scheduled to remain in training for 2023.

“I can't believe my luck in acquiring Rich Strike and achieving so much in such a short time in the sport,” said Dawson. “I can't thank my trainer, Eric Reed, and all of our connections, including Rich Strike's jockey, Sonny Leon, enough. I am honored and humbled to receive this award.”

Kearney bought his first horse in 2021 and races under the name Winngate Stables. Like Dawson, he also has just two horses in training, but that first purchase was Kathleen O., who won four of her first five starts, including the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks and the GII Davona Dale S.

“I have been a racing fan for years and thought I was imposing on my friend, [trainer] Shug [McGaughey], when I asked him to help me get into racing, but I'm so glad I did it,” said Kearney. “Purchasing Kathleen O. was an amazing decision, and I am thrilled to be named as a New Owner of the Year.”

To qualify as OwnerView's New Owner of the Year, nominees must have made their first start as an owner since 2019, had an ownership stake in a horse at the time it won a stakes race in the past 12 months, and had a verifiable owner's license in 2022. Previous winners have included Boat Racing, MyRacehorse, Larry Best, the Churchill Downs Racing Club, Charles and Susan Chu, Sol Kumin, and LNJ Foxwoods.

Clark Named Thoroughbred Owner Conference Keynote Speaker

Stacie Clark, operations consultant for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), will be the keynote speaker for OwnerView's in-person Thoroughbred Owner Conferenceat Saratoga Race Course July 25-26, 2022.

Clark has been with the TAA since its inception in 2012 and assumed the role of operations consultant in 2014. Previously, she created the first in-house retirement program while serving as Thoroughbred Retirement Program manager at Adena Springs.

Clark rode as a jockey in Ontario and was nominated for the 1994 Sovereign Award as Outstanding Apprentice in Canada. When Woodbine Racetrack expanded its television department in 1999, she crossed over to associate producer and racing television commentator.

Clark will provide her perspective on the evolution of aftercare from the early 2000s to today, highlight the progress made by the industry, and discuss future challenges.

“Thoroughbred aftercare has moved to the forefront of industry priorities in the last 20 years or so, and Stacie has been one of the great influencers in moving the needle in this area, including participating in previous Thoroughbred Owner Conferences,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “In both our in-person and virtual conferences, OwnerView has emphasized the importance of aftercare as part of a stable's business plan, and we are excited to have Stacie joining us as our keynote to talk about this important topic.”

OwnerView To Host Webinar On Horseracing Integrity And Safety Authority Registration

OwnerView announced today that it has added a panel to its Virtual Owner Conference series with representatives from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) to assist owners with the registration process for HISA. The Zoom webinar will be held Thursday, June 16, at 1 pm and will last about 60 minutes. Participating in the webinar from HISA will be Lisa Lazarus, chief executive officer; Steve Keech, technology director; Ann McGovern, director of Racetrack Safety; and John Roach, general counsel. The session will include time to submit questions to the HISA team.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, which was signed into law in Dec. 2020, established HISA as an independent agency to draft and enforce uniform safety and integrity rules in Thoroughbred racing in the United States. The bill goes into effect July 1, and owners are among the list of individuals who must register with HISA as a covered person prior to this date. Interested individuals can sign up for the virtual conference at ownerview.com/event/conference or send an email to Gary Falter, gfalter@jockeyclub.com. The webinar will be recorded and made available on the OwnerView YouTube channel for owners that cannot attend the live session.
