TOBA National Awards Announces 2023 Finalists

The winners, finalists, and official sponsors for this year's TOBA National Awards were announced Friday by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The National Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, Sept. 9 at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, KY and the National Awards Luncheon, which honors breeders from 20 states and Canada, will be held Friday, Sept. 8 at WinStar Farm.

The finalists for the National Owner of the Year are Peter M. Brant, Godolphin, Hronis Racing, Klaravich Stables, and Winchell Thoroughbreds.

The three finalists for the National Breeder of the Year are Godolphin, Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC., and Summer Wind Equine.

Secretariat Center To Hold Annual Fundraiser Oct. 14 At Godolphin’s Jonabell Farm

The Secretariat Center will hold its annual fundraising event, “Bluegrass Brunch and Bubbles” at Godolphin's Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Kentucky Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ET, the organization said in a release Wednesday.

Bidding on everything from vacation packages and experience tickets to artwork, halters, saddles, sports memorabilia and more, will go live Oct. 1 and will close at Noon on the day of the event. All proceeds go toward supporting the Secretariat Center's mission of preparing off-track Thoroughbreds for post-track careers through rehabilitation and retraining.

“Support of events like this is key to raising community awareness and assisting Thoroughbred aftercare efforts,” said Shelley Mann, the Secretariat Center's Executive Director. “It is important for us to share with the community how these wonderful horses can be cared for and thrive after their racing career.”

Pretty Mischievous in Good Order After Test Score

Godolphin's Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief), who crossed the wire first in Saturday's GI Test S., has exited her race well, trainer Brendan Walsh confirmed Sunday.

The filly won the GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Acorn S. wins earlier this spring.

“She's fine, she ate up good and has been eating peppermints all morning here, hanging over the door,” Walsh said. “She ran well [Saturday], but it was just a little sharp for her, though she beat some very good fillies. The filly that broke down was the best of the day, but we're proud of the effort ours gave. That's her putting in her A-effort, like she always does. She always leaves it all out there and we can't ask for more than that. I didn't realize how much she really did close. It just goes to show how good a filly she is to give as good an effort as she did.”

Walsh said he did not have any immediate plans for Pretty Mischievous, but noted it was likely to include a step up in distance.

“We'll probably go back to the two turns after that. We're not really leaning anywhere yet, as far as her next race,” Walsh said. “I would say two turns is definite and the [Sept. 23 GI] Cotillion [S.] would be the one that you would think would be the place to go–but I haven't discussed with the team, so nothing has been decided. She's won three Grade Is–or two and a half–and a GII [Rachel Alexandra S.]. There's no one else who's done that.”

Rebel’s Romance To Miss Arlington Million

Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was to be rerouted to next Saturday's GI Arlington Million at Colonial Downs after going down in the July 30 GII Bowling Green S., will reportedly miss the race, a tweet from Godolphin read.

The 5-year-old, whose previous trip to America resulted in a 2 1/2-length victory in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf, missed a prep for this year's G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic and was forced to train up to the 2410-meter feature, only to finish 11 lengths back of the world's top-rated racehorse Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in seventh, his first defeat in six starts on the turf. Supplemented to the Bowling Green, the dark bay clipped heels and tossed jockey Richard Mullen to the turf, but got back to his feet and completed the course riderless.

According to the tweet, connections are set to reassess his options with future plans to be announced at a later time.
