TRF ‘Barbecue at the Barn’ Returns For 2021

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's Barbecue at the Barn returns as an in-person event and will be held at Saratoga Winery Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 5-9 p.m. The event, which sold out in 2019, was held as a drive-thru in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to a meal, the event will feature family-friendly activities, music, raffle and silent auction items, along with book signings by Chris Brown, author of “Roll Cyrus Roll” and award-winning broadcaster and former jockey Donna Brothers, author of “Inside Track.” There will also be guest appearances from racing celebrities including Maggie Wolfendale Morley, Acacia Courtney, Ramon Dominguez, and more, as well as a few special equine guests.

“We are so excited to welcome back so many friends of the herd to celebrate the summer at Saratoga,” said Kim Weir, Director of Major Gifts and Planning. “2020 was certainly a year unlike any other and we are so grateful for the continued support of our mission to save horses and change lives.”

Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are available for advance pricing of $40 through Aug. 1 before increasing to $45 per ticket.

Audarya in Good Form For Nassau

Breeders' Cup champion Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who was second in the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot in June, is doing well in advance of the July 29 G1 Qatar Nassau S. One of the highlights of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the 10-furlong contest appears a good fit for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine.

Soviet Song (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) won the Nassau 17 years ago for Fanshawe, who said on Monday, “Audarya seems in really good form. We've had the Qatar Nassau S. in mind for a while and she's been training well since Ascot. The handicapper kept her rating at 117 after the Prince Of Wales's S., but I felt it was a really good performance. I hope she can improve again.

Added the trainer of his G1 Prix Jean Romanet victress, “She won her Group 1s at Deauville and Keeneland which are both flat tracks, but she did win a handicap at Goodwood over 1-mile as a 3-year-old where she proved she can handle the track. In terms of ground, she has run on everything. It was very testing when she won the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville and they broke the track record on firm ground when she won the Filly and Mare Turf at Keeneland, she's very versatile.

“Circumstances have meant that we've had a few different jockeys ride her, but William [Buick] seemed to get on well with her in the Prince Of Wales's S. and hopefully he can ride her next Thursday.”

Jockey Club Round Table To Be Held Aug. 15

The 69th Annual The Jockey Club Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing will be held virtually for the second consecutive year Sunday, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m. ET. It will be streamed on The Jockey Club's website at jockeyclub.com on and will also air be aired on NYRA's YouTube channel, the FOX Sports app, and Racetrack Television Network's respective platforms. The Jockey Club Chairman Stuart S. Janney III will preside over the conference.

Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and administrator of The Jockey Club's Thoroughbred Incentive Program, will moderate an aftercare panel that will discuss issues in the current aftercare landscape and programs in development to address them.

Dr. Yuval Neria, professor, Clinical Medical Psychology, Columbia University, Departments of Psychiatry and Epidemiology, and director, Trauma and PTSD at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, will talk about the Man O'War Project. The Man O'War Project, founded by Ambassador Earle I. Mack, was the first university-led research study to examine the effectiveness of equine-assisted therapy in treating veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Emily Lyman, the founder and chief executive officer of Branch & Bramble, a digital marketing agency utilized by America's Best Racing, will detail how her organization analyzes data to assess and react to public sentiment, build brand trust, and develop fans.

Will Duff Gordon, the chief executive officer of Total Performance Data (TPD), will provide an overview of TPD's timing products, its work with Equibase Company's Gmax system, and potential opportunities for TPD in the areas of sports betting, fixed odds, and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA). Charles Scheeler and Dr. Tessa Muir will provide an update on HISA, which was signed into law at the end of 2020. In May, Scheeler was named the chairman of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's board of directors. He is a retired partner at DLA Piper, and his background includes serving as lead counsel to former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell in connection with his independent investigation of performance-enhancing substance use in Major League Baseball (the Mitchell Report).

Muir, who is the former anti-doping manager at the British Horseracing Authority and has served as a regulatory veterinarian at Racing Victoria, joined the United States Anti-Doping Agency in March to assist with the implementation of HISA and facilitate a smooth transition to the new regulatory structure that will exist as a result of HISA.

David O'Rourke, the president and chief executive officer of the New York Racing Association (NYRA), will discuss NYRA's investment in its facilities, expanded television coverage, and NYRA Bets, its national advanced deposit wagering platform.

James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club, will deliver a report on the activities of The Jockey Club.

Fasig-Tipton Releases New York-Bred Catalog

A total of 308 horses have been cataloged for the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale, to be held Sunday and Monday, Aug. 15 and 16 in the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion on the sales grounds in Saratoga Springs, New York. The New York-bred sale returns to its normal spot on the sales calendar after COVID-19 caused the New York-bred yearlings to be sold at the Selected Yearling Showcase in Lexington last September.

“We are thrilled to be conducting this sale back in Saratoga Springs–where it belongs–following last year's cancellation due to the pandemic,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “We annually offer the cream of the New York-bred yearling crop at this auction, and the quality of sire power and conformation on offer this year is most impressive.”

As the New York-bred program has continued to thrive–state-bred maidens are running for $85,000, not to mention a robust state-bred stakes program at all of the New York tracks–the aforementioned sire power looks nothing like your typical regional sale.

A plethora of Kentucky stallions have youngsters cataloged for the sale, headlined by the 11 entered by Practical Joke, whose 'TDN Rising Star' Wit was so impressive in winning the GIII Sanford S. July 17. Constitution, whose son Tiz the Law fetched $110,000 from Sackatoga Stables' Jack Knowlton at this sale in 2018 and went on to win last summer's GI Runhappy Travers S., has eight in the catalog, while others include Candy Ride (Arg)– sire of impressive July 18 maiden winner Senbei–Distorted Humor, Hard Spun, Into Mischief, Liam's Map, Maclean's Music, Munnings, Nyquist, Street Sense, Uncle Mo and Violence. New York-based stallions include the reliable Central Banker, Freud and a dozen by the sadly departed Laoban.

Freshmen sires are also strongly represented in the catalog, including nine each for GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister); Army Mule (Friesan Fire), whose first yearlings were coveted at Fasig-Tipton July last week; Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday); and Into Mischief's half-brother Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy).

Owing to the day's scheduled racing program at the nearby racetrack, Sunday's session is set to begin at 7 p.m., while Monday's round of bidding will begin at 12 noon.
