Wootton Bassett’s Al Riffa Swoops For Group 1 Glory At The Curragh

Second to the reopposing Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in his July 16 debut over seven furlongs at the Curragh, Jassim Bin Ali Al Attiyah's Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Love On My Mind {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) graduated over the same course and distance last month and stepped forward to provide apprentice jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle with a career high in Sunday's G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S., his third seven-furlong outing at the Co. Kildare venue. The 9-1 chance settled into a rhythm behind all five rivals through halfway and made a move forward with three furlongs remaining. Coming under increased urging passing the quarter-mile marker, he was ridden to launch his challenge approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly in the closing stages to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths from Proud And Regal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

“It's unbelievable,” said Browne McMonagle after claiming a maiden top-level success. “He was very straightforward from the gates. He jumped, travelled good and loved the soft conditions. I was really happy the whole way through. I was keen to move up to the boys going to the three [furlong pole]. I didn't want them to get too far in front of me in that ground because it would have been hard to peg them back. As soon as I gave him a little kick in the belly and he moved onto the bridle, I was always the winner. I was travelling over the top of them, he picked up good and put it to bed very quick. It's hard to believe and, hopefully it's the first of many. It's down to Joseph [O'Brien] and a massive thanks to everyone behind the scenes at home. I wouldn't be here without my family, Mum and Dad and everyone's here today so it's great. It means a lot, I couldn't have done it on a bigger stage and it's great to get one.”

Al Riffa, who becomes the sixth Group 1 winner for his sire (by Iffraaj {GB}), is the lone scorer produced by an unraced daughter of the stakes-winning Moments Of Joy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), who also threw the dual G3 Sagaro S. victor Mizzou (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G3 Give Thanks S. placegetter Eternal Bounty (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Noblesse S. third Unity (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Eternal Bounty is the dam of G3 Hampton Court S. third Secret Protector (War Front) while Unity's leading performer is Listed Wild Flower S. victor Crimean Tatar (Tur) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Moments Of Joy is the leading representative of G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G1 Prix Vermeille-winning champion My Emma (GB) (Marju {Ire}), herself a half-sister to G1 St Leger and G1 Gold Cup hero Classic Cliche (Ire) (Salse). Love On My Mind has a yearling filly by Land Force (Ire) to come.

Churchill Filly Leads The Way At The SGA Yearling Sale

A filly by Churchill (Ire) out of the dual listed-placed Rabiosa Fiore (GB) (Sakhee's Secret {GB}) emerged as the €200,000 top lot during Saturday's SGA Yearling Sale in Milan. Consigned by Razza Vedano, the Mar. 6 foal (lot 28), named Rinnovati (Ity), is a half-sister to the two-time stakes winner Amalaura (Ire) (Raven's Pass). Another half-sister, the Saxon Warrior (Jpn) filly Rage Of Bamby (Ire) graduated at Leicester on Sept. 6. Marco Bozzi was in action for the relative of French Classic heroine East Of The Moon (Private Account).

Bozzi also struck for seven other lots on Saturday, shelling out €90,000 for another Vedano draftee in lot 25, a son of Sea The Stars (Ire) out of Listed Premio Terme di Merano heroine Orange Sun (GB) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}). That sire had topped the 2021 edition of the sale with a €120,000 colt. Originally a 30,000gns Tatteralls December foal, the colt is a half-brother to a pair of winners. Third dam Field Of Hope (Ire) (Selkirk)'s best day in the sun was a victory in the 1999 G1 Prix de la Foret.

Also from Vedano was lot 15, the Zoffany (Ire) colt Interstellar (Ity), out of the Group 3-placed Irene Watts (GB) (Miswaki Tern), who hammered for €100,000 to Micchiche' Gaetano. He is a half-brother to Il Grande Gatsby (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), who has won at the listed level in Italy and ran third in the G3 Premio Parioli.

The sale got off to a fast start with lot 4, a colt by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) out of Listed Criterium Femminile victress Biz Bar (GB) (Tobougg {GB}), making €85,000 from Antonio Caracciolo. The bay's sire was also responsible for the smart G2 Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile hero Jadoomi (Fr) in Ireland on Saturday. From the Allevamento Le.Gi. consignment, the colt is a half-brother to six black-type horses, anchored by G1 Gran Premio di Milano scorer Biz The Nurse (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), and the group winners Misterious Boy (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) and Biz Power (Ire) (Power {GB}).

Another Coolmore sire was in the limelight shortly thereafter, as lot 12, a Le.Gi.-consigned filly by Wootton Bassett (GB) named Snow Roses (Ity) caught the eye of Powerstown Stud at €70,000. She had passed through the Arqana December ring for €85,000 as a foal. Her dam was twice stakes-placed, and is a half-sister to group winners Voice Of Love (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}) and Time Chant (GB) (War Chant).

Le.Gi. was also the consignor on record for lot 32, a Gleneagles (Ire) filly, who made €76,000 on the bid of Immobiliare Casa Paola. She had been a €30,000 Goffs November buyback last year. The daughter of Sopran Enery (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) is a half-sister to the G2 Premio Oaks d'Italia winner Auyantepui (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), while under the G3 Italian 1000 Guineas-winning second dam Sopran Londa (Ire) (Danehill) is the G1 Italian Derby hero Cima De Triomphe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) among others.

Razza del Sole offered Milano City (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 22) on Saturday, and Valfredo Valiani snapped up the son of dual listed winner Mujadil Lachy (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) for €75,000. His well-related dam is a half-sister to a trio of stakes winners led by G3 Premio Tudini and G3 Premio Omenoni scorer Titus Shadow (Ire) (Titus Livius {Fr}).

From a catalogue of 158, 135 yearlings went through the ring, with 92 (68.1%) finding new homes for a gross of €1,852,500. The average increased to €20,136 (+7.4%), however the median dipped 16.7% to €10,000.

Wootton Bassett Colt A New Rising Star At ParisLongchamp

Jean-Claude Rouget unveiled another TDN Rising Star at ParisLongchamp on Thursday as Nurlan Bizakov's Padishakh (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Penny Lane {Ger}, by Lord Of England {Ger}) scored with abundant promise in the Prix de Fontenoy over a mile for colts and gelding beginners. Anchored in fifth early by Cristian Demuro, the 100-30 second favourite tended to over-race but when asked to stretch two out found a 10.94 penultimate split to reach the Wertheimers' Speechman (Kingman {GB}) on the front end. Stretching away from the furlong pole, the bay hit the line strong with 2 1/2 lengths to spare over the eye-catching Juddmonte homebred Halfway Line (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}), with Speechman a further 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

The winner, who cost €130,000 at the Arqana Deauville August Sale, is the third TDN Rising Star for his sire and hails from a strong German family. He is the second and currently last known foal out of Penny Lane, who was successful in the Listed Prix des Sablonnets and finished third in the G3 Prix Cleopatre. Her first foal, the 3-year-old filly Snap Ambush (Fr) by Wootton Bassett's son Almanzor (Fr) who was a €250,000 Arqana Deauville Select Sale graduate tragically broke down when looking in control of a Chelmsford handicap last month and had to be euthanised.

The listed-placed second dam Peace Time (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}) proved prolific at producing black-type performers, with five to boast of including Penny Lane. They are Lord Of England's G1 Preis der Diana heroine Palmas (Ger), the dual group 3 winner Peace Royale (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}), the G3 Fahrhofer Stutenpreis scorer Peaceful Love (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}) and the G2 Park Hill S. runner-up Phiz (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}). Peace Royale went on to produce the black-type winners Peace In Motion (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and Peace Society (Iffraaj {GB}), while Peaceful Love threw the G3 Prix la Force scorer Pao Alto (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) and Phiz the G2 Dubai Gold Cup-placed Al Madhar (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Another of her daughters Peace of Glory (Ger) also by Sholokhov was responsible for Peaches (Ger), a further Lord Of England who captured the Listed Winterkonigin Trial, and the G3 Zukunftsrennen third Peace Of Paris (Ger) (Helmet {Aus}).

Background Check: Alabama

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is the GI Alabama S., one of the oldest stakes races in the country.

Dating to 1872, eight years after the first Travers S. was run and 12 years after the first Queen's Plate (the oldest stakes race in North America), the Alabama is the last leg in New York's Triple Tiara following the GI Acorn S. and the GI Coaching Club American Oaks. The major-league 3-year-old filly contest was run at different distances early, but has remained a constant at 1 1/4 miles since 1917. It's a safe bet anyone with a good sophomore filly would love few things more than adding the Alabama to their win column. As with most races this old, a few years were skipped owing to various circumstances, but history has recorded 141 individual winners of the Alabama. How have they fared as broodmares?

Several Alabama winners through the years also won the GI Test S., GI CCA Oaks, GI Diana S., or GIII Schuylerville S.; please see those previous profiles for notes on broodmare phenomenons Sky Beauty, November Snow, Tempted, Busanda, Vagrancy, and Cleopatra. Following are the some of the other most important Alabama winners by what impact they have had on the breed through their sons and daughters.

Pretty Discreet (1992, Private Account–Pretty Persuasive, by Believe It): Her three stakes winners were all colts–GISWs Discreet Cat and Discreetly Mine, as well as MSW & MGISP Pretty Wild–and her three daughters to stay in this country are all stakes producers. She is also the granddam of GISW Awesome Maria, who sold for $4 million at the 2013 Keeneland November sale, and June 9 Astoria S. winner Devious Dame, the first black-type winner for freshman sire Girvin.

Heavenly Prize (1991, Seeking the Gold–Oh What a Dance, by Nijinsky II): One would expect a mare descended from Blitey and Lady Pitt to do great things and Heavenly Prize held up her end of the bargain. Her sons included MGISW Good Reward and GSW Pure Prize, while her descendants thus far include GISWs Persistently, Queen Goddess, and Instilled Regard, plus GSW & MGISP Stays in Vegas.

Versailles Treaty (1988, Danzig–Ten Cents a Dance, by Buckpasser): GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner George Vancouver is out of this mare, as is GII Remsen S. winner and GI Met Mile runner-up Saarland. Her daughters and granddaughters have produced GISW Mongolian Groom, MGSW Dragon Bay, and several other stakes performers.

Maplejinsky (1985, Nijinsky II–Gold Beauty, by Mr. Prospector): Her daughter, Sky Beauty, won the Alabama and the CCA Oaks in 1993, was named champion older mare in 1994, and captured a total of nine Grade I races before producing MGSW Hurricane Cat and a daughter who would later be granddam of GISW Violence. Maplejinsky didn't stop there. Other daughters and granddaughters have produced MGISWs Guarana, Point of Entry, Pine Island, and Tale of Ekati, as well as GI Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Pleasant Home and a slew of other high-quality stakes winners. Her great-granddaughter Magical World sold for $5.2 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale, while Magical World's daughter Guarana brought $4.4 million at the same sale.

MG1SW State of Rest traces to 1979 Alabama winner It's in the Air | Sarah Andrew

It's in the Air (1976, Mr. Prospector–A Wind Is Rising, by Francis S.): This mare, often remembered as her sire's first of many champions, has had some very significant activity among her female descendants in the last year. Her MGISW granddaughter, Music Note, produced the 2021 G1 Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide, while another unraced granddaughter is the dam of 2021 GI Saratoga Derby Invitational S. winner State of Rest (Ire), who is also a G1 winner in England, France, and Australia. Other GI/G1 winners produced by her daughters include Musical Chimes and Storming Home (GB).

Lauries Dancer (1968, Northern Dancer–Its Ann, by Royal Gem II {Aus}): Although she didn't produce a stakes winner, this Canadian Horse of Year's daughters and granddaughters have produced MGISWs Will's Way and Tizway, as well as GISW Willa On the Move, and GISP and excellent Maryland sire Citidancer.

Fanfreluche (1967, Northern Dancer–Ciboulette, by Chop Chop): This Canadian Horse of the Year, even more famous for her abduction than for her race record, was also a remarkable producer with long-reaching influence on multiple continents. Honored as Canadian Broodmare of the Year in 1978, her own foals included two-time Canadian Horse of the Year and U.S. GISW L'Enjoleur, additional Canadian champions La Voyageuse and Medaille d'Or, GSW D'Accord, and MSW Grand Luxe. Her female-line descendants have thus far included French highweight and multiple G1SW Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), as well as European G1SWs Majestic Roi and Erupt (Ire); U.S. GISWs Aube Indienne (Fr) and Combatant; Australian G1SWs Russian Revolution (Aus), Flying Spur (Aus), Encosta de Lago (Aus), and Duais (Aus); and New Zealand G1SW Sherwood Forest (Aus).

Natashka (1963, Dedicate–Natasha, by Nasrullah {GB}): Named Broodmare of the Year in 1981, Natashka sports a long list of black-type winners tracing to her, including leading U.S. sire Elusive Quality and a number of champions.

High Bid (1956, To Market–Stepping Stone, by Princequillo {GB}): This Wheatley/Phipps mare is on this list for one very sound reason. Her first foal was Bold Bidder, not only a champion on the racetrack, but sire and broodmare sire of several luminaries. His two Kentucky Derby winners in a six-year span included one considered among the Top 10 runners of the 1900s: Horse of the Year Spectacular Bid.

Coolmore stallion Wootton Bassett is a descendant of 1931 Alabama winner Risque | Coolmore Stud

Parlo (1951, Heliopolis {GB}–Fairy Palace, by Pilate): Her daughters included 1969 Broodmare of the Year All Beautiful, who produced Horse of the Year Arts and Letters and is great-granddam of dual champion and five-time GISW Silverbulletday.

Salaminia (1937, Man o' War–Alcibiades, by Supremus): A number of stakes winners trace to this daughter of Man o' War, none more notable than English Horse of the Year and excellent sire Sir Ivor. He lives on particularly through his daughters, although his sire son, Sir Tristram (Ire), redefined the breed in Australia and New Zealand.

Risque (1928, Stimulus–Risky, by Diadumenos {GB}): 1980 Broodmare of the Year Key Bridge traces to her, as does U.S. Horse of the Year Fort Marcy and Canadian Horses of the Year Izvestia and With Approval. Champion Key to the Mint, MGISW Touch Gold, and excellent European sire Wootton Bassett (GB) are just a few on the long list of other high-class descendants of Risque.

Escutcheon (1927, Sir Gallahad III {Fr}–Affection {Fr}, by Isidor {GB}): In addition to producing Kentucky Oaks winner Mars Shield, this mare is the ancestress of Broodmares of the Year Levee and Delta, champions Shuvee, Slew o' Gold, Bayou, Smart Deb, Talking Picture, Sacahuista, Playful Act (Ire)–and many more.

Malachite (1913, Rock Sand {GB}–Miss Hanover, by Hanover): A number of stakes performers trace to this mare, most importantly 1943 Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Count Fleet. He was ranked among the leading sires and broodmare sires in the country for many years.

Sallie McClelland (1888, Hindoo–Red and Blue, by Alarm): This wonderful producer of yesteryear is the dam of 1904 Kentucky Oaks winner Audience and ancestress of Horses of the Year Whisk Broom II and Crusader, as well as dual champion Top Flight.
