Without Parole Retired To Newsells Park Stud

G1 St James’s Palace S. winner Without Parole (GB) (Frankel {GB}-Without You Babe, by Lemon Drop Kid) has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2021 at Newsells Park Stud.

Campaigned as a homebred by John and Tanya Gunther, Without Parole won his lone start at two by six lengths for John Gosden and went unbeaten through his first three starts at three, winning Sandown’s Listed Heron S. before taking the St James’s Palace in the second-fastest mile ever run at Ascot and with Group 1 winners Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and U S Navy Flag (War Front) in his wake.

Without Parole made two starts at four before joining trainer Chad Brown in the U.S. He was third in last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Mile on his American debut and picked up two more Grade I placings over the past year, including a third in the Shadwell Turf Mile on Oct. 3.

Without Parole is a half-brother to GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz (Speightstown), who has four first-crop winners in the U.S. from 21 foals. Their dam, Without You Babe, is a half-sister to GI Travers S. and GI Cigar Mile winner Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) and she has also produced the listed-winning She’s Got You (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

“Without Parole has given me the most memorable and exciting day of my life with his victory in the St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot,” said John Gunther. “It was my biggest dream come true and I continue to be overwhelmed by the heart and perseverance he has shown with his racing pursuits in America. He has raced in 12 consecutive Grade Is and faced myriad traffic obstructions, at times unsuitable turf conditions and he just never gives up, as demonstrated again by his third-place finish in the prestigious Shadwell Turf Mile. I love this horse and can’t wait to breed to him.”

Newsells Park Stud General Manager Julian Dollar added, “We’re delighted to be standing Without Parole at Newsells Park. It’s no secret that we, like virtually every other global stallion operation, chased this horse hard after his impressive win at Royal Ascot and it’s fitting he should now retire to the stud where he was born and raised. Without Parole is a beautiful horse with an athletic physique and superb conformation. As his race record states, he’s an out-and-out miler who possesses a great turn of foot. Importantly, he has a potent, proven sire’s pedigree, which should offer breeders plenty of options. He’ll certainly be heavily supported by Newsells Park and of course his Eclipse award-winning breeders, John and Tanya Gunther.”

Bowies Hero Will Have To Fend Off Chad Brown Quartet To Defend His Title In Shadwell Turf Mile

Agave Racing Stable, ERJ Racing, Madaket Stables and Rockin Robin Racing Stable's Bowies Hero will attempt to become the third horse to win the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) in consecutive years when he faces 10 rivals Saturday in the 35th running of the $750,000 race.

The Shadwell Turf Mile is one of five graded stakes on Saturday's 11-race program at Keeneland that begins at 1:05 p.m. ET. The Shadwell Turf Mile is the afternoon's third Grade 1 race and scheduled as the 10th race with a 5:57 p.m. post time.

Trained by Phil D'Amato, Bowies Hero will be trying to join Gio Ponti (2010-2011) and Dumaani (1995-1996) as the only repeat winners in the race that is a “Win and You're In” test for the $2 million Breeders' Cup FanDuel Mile (G1) Presented by PDJF to be run Nov. 7.

Bowies Hero will break from post position four and be ridden by Rafael Bejarano.

To repeat, Bowies Hero will have to get by a quartet of runners trained by Chad Brown headed by two-time Grade 1 winner Raging Bull (FR).

Owned by Peter Brant, Raging Bull returns to Keeneland where he was third beaten a neck in July in the Maker's Mark Mile (G1). Winner of the Shoemaker Mile (G1) at Santa Anita in May to open his 2020 campaign, Raging Bull will be ridden Saturday by Joel Rosario and break from post position six.

Brown's other entrants are William Lawrence's Analyze It, winner of the Transylvania (G3) here in 2018 and fourth in the Shadwell last year; Juddmonte Farms' Flavius, winner of the recent Tourist Mile at Kentucky Downs; and, John and Tanya Gunther's Without Parole (GB) who was fourth in the Maker's Mark Mile.

Tyler Gaffalione will ride Analyze It and break from post eight; Flavius will exit post seven and be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr. while Julien Leparoux has the call on Without Parole who will break from post position three.

Uni and Got Stormy Meet Again in Fourstardave

Champion Uni (More Than Ready) and MGISW Got Stormy (Get Stormy) continue their rivalry Saturday as they look to continue dominating their male counterparts in Saratoga’s GI Fourstardave H.

The two chestnuts met for the first time in last year’s renewal of this event, in which Got Stormy was a 2 1/2-length victress over the re-opposing Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) with Uni in third. After that Got Stormy went to the GI Woodbine Mile, hoping to follow in the famous hoofprints of fellow Mark Casse trainee Tepin (Bernstein), but came up a half-length short. Meanwhile, Uni went to Keeneland, where she scored a decisive victory in the GI First Lady S. in October.

The pair met again at Santa Anita in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile Nov. 2 and this time Uni got the better of her rival, storming home to a 1 1/2-length triumph over Got Stormy with stablemate Without Parole (Frankel {GB}) in third. Clinching the Eclipse Award for top turf female with that win, Uni made her first start of the season at Belmont June 27, completing the trifecta behind her talented younger stablemate Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

“She missed some time with a splint issue, and we stopped breezing for five or six weeks,” said Bradley Weisbord of BSW/Crow Bloodstock, who manages Uni on behalf of her owners. “The ground might have been a little soften the Just a Game and Joel didn’t think she got through it great, but she was short, and she really needed the race. She just had her best breeze of the year last week and we weren’t completely sure about this race. We were 50-50 between the Fourstardave and the [GII] Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill, but the breeze is what gave Chad the confidence to run her, so she’s sitting on go.”

Got Stormy, on the other hand has made five starts since the Breeders’ Cup, closing 2019 with a win in the GI Matriarch S. Dec. 1. Fourth in the GIII Endeavour S. at Tampa Feb. 8, her best effort so far this season was a close second in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile Mar. 7. The Gary Barber colorbearer checked in fourth in her last two outings at Belmont in the June 3 GIII Beaugay S. and the July 4 GIII Poker S.

“She’s training well and she’s back to Saratoga, which is where she did her best running last year, so we’re hoping for the best,” Casse said. “We know she likes that course, we know that she likes firm turf. She’s got to come with her A game. She’s the same horse, she looks great and trains great. She’s just been a little bit unlucky. She ran over some good turf courses and she wants it to be really firm.”

Raging Bull kicked off this term with a win in the GI Shoemaker Mile S. at Santa Anita May 25 and was a close third behind Classic winner War of Will (War Front) in Keeneland’s rescheduled GI Maker’s Mark Mile July 10.
