White Abarrio Dominates Whitney for Richard Dutrow Jr. Barn

White Abarrio (c, 4, Race Day–Catching Diamonds, by Into Mischief), making his second start for conditioner Richard Dutrow Jr., dominated the field by open lengths in the GI Whitney S. at 10-1 odds, and has secured his spot in the gate for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Dutrow Seeks Kentucky License at Tuesday Hearing

Richard E. Dutrow, Jr., who in February regained his license to train horses in New York after sitting out a 10-year revocation imposed by the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), is on the agenda for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC)'s license review committee meeting on Tuesday to try and regain his license in that state.

The 63-year-old GI Kentucky Derby-winning trainer with the long and controversial history of racing infractions has a 1-1-1 record from three starts at Belmont Park since rebooting his career with fresh stock May 6.

Earlier this week, Dutrow was named as the new trainer for the 2022 GI Florida Derby winner White Abarrio (Race Day). An ownership entity for that colt, C2 Racing Stable, had stated the switch was necessary to ensure White Abarrio would be able to campaign in major stakes given the indefinite suspension recently imposed by Churchill Downs Inc., (CDI), upon White Abarrio's former conditioner, Saffie Joseph, Jr.

According to the KHRC meeting notice, the May 30 format will be for the committee to go into closed session “to deliberate regarding individual adjudications. The committee will reconvene in open session to vote on the participants' license applications.”

Dutrow's trainees earned more than $87 million between 1979 and 2013. They won multiple graded stakes, including three Breeders' Cup races and the 2008 Kentucky Derby with Big Brown. He often topped the trainer standings at New York tracks during the 2000s decade.

Around that same time, Dutrow's official rap sheet maintained by the Association of Racing Commissioners International began to swell with violations related to an array of equine pharmaceuticals.

Between 2000 and his attempt to win the Triple Crown in 2008 with Big Brown, Dutrow was cited for 18 drug infractions, ranging from comparably benign violations for overages of legal medications phenylbutazone and Lasix, to more serious charges of using mepivacaine, an anesthetic that can be used to make sore horses feel no pain.

In addition to $20,000 in drug fines, Dutrow racked up a $5,000 penalty for providing misleading information to authorities about a workout, and was slapped with a $25,000 fine in 2007 for having contact with his stable while he was supposed to be serving a suspension.

On Nov. 20, 2010, the Dutrow trainee Fastus Cactus tested positive for butorphanol after a winning effort at Aqueduct. Dutrow's barn was searched and investigators claimed to have found in a desk drawer three syringes filled with a muscle relaxer, xylazine.

The NYSGC's predecessor agency, the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, revoked Dutrow's license on Oct. 12, 2011.

Dutrow battled that revocation for two years, both at the racing commission level and in the courts. His suspension officially commenced Jan. 17, 2013. Later that year he filed a failed federal lawsuit seeking monetary damages and a reinstatement of his licensure.

In 2017, Dutrow filed for and was granted Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, claiming he had zero income and total liabilities of $1.76 million.

In 2018, a collective of supporters launched an online petition calling for the NYSGC to allow Dutrow to be allowed to return to training. The petition was signed by a number of Hall-of-Fame trainers and jockeys, but it failed to sway the commission.

In 2020, Dutrow's legal team tried a different route by applying for a license in Kentucky. Appearing before the KHRC's license review committee, former NYSGC steward Stephen Lewandowski testified on Dutrow's behalf, alleging that the syringes found in Dutrow's barn in 2011 were planted. Fellow trainer Dale Romans also vouched for Dutrow, as did the noted equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage.

That 2020 KHRC committee voted not to grant Dutrow a license without stating its reasoning. At the time, TDN reported that the committee's chairperson, Ken Jackson, said during the meeting that it was the committee's policy not to comment on its rulings once they had been made.

The KHRC license review committee did, however, allow Dutrow to withdraw his application so he could avoid having a denial of licensure on his record.

Dutrow has since paid a $50,000 NYSGC fine, his term of revocation in New York ended on Jan. 17, 2023, and he now has a valid New York license in hand.

According to the KHRC website, the current members of the license review committee are Lesley Howard (chair), Paul Brooker (steward designee), Jamie Eads, Greg Harbut and George Haydon.

Dutrow is one of four trainers on the agenda. The others are Patricia Brewer, David Ward and Francesca de la Flor.

White Abarrio Removed From Saffie Joseph’s Barn by C2 Racing; Heads to Dutrow

White Abarrio (Race Day) has been taken away from trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. after his suspension by Churchill Downs during a week when two of his horses died from unexplained causes at the Louisville track, according to a Tweet posted by White Abarrio's owners, C2 Racing Stable. He was scheduled to arrive at his new trainer Rick Dutrow's barn at Belmont on Tuesday.

Parents Pride (Maclean's Music) and Chasing Artie (We Miss Artie), both owned by Ken Ramsey and trained by Joseph, collapsed and died April 29 and May 2, respectively. Parents Pride was pulled up at the five-sixteenths pole during his race before collapsing, while Chasing Artie collapsed after returning to the unsaddling area after his race.

“Twenty days ago, the primary trainer for C2 Racing Stable, Saffie Joseph Jr., was indefinitely suspended by a racetrack operator and since this suspension, we have not been successful in obtaining the necessary answers from several racing jurisdictions or racetrack operators regarding future race nominations and race entries by Saffie Joseph, Jr.,” the statement posted on Twitter reads.

“Due to the lack of answers by jurisdictions and operators, they have made it very difficult to manage the remainder of White Abarrio's four-year-old campaign, thus requiring us to make a trainer change for the remainder of the year. This is definitely not our preference; however, we had two choices, remain with Saffie not knowing if our race nominations or entries would be accepted or make a trainer change so we can nominate White Abarrio to the Metropolitain Mile on June 10, 2023 and future races.

“The decision to make a trainer change is solely based on the ability to manage White Abarrio. We have the utmost confidence and trust in Saffie Joseph, Jr. and his team. We know from first-hand experience and being at the barn on almost a daily basis for the past year that he and his team deeply care for th e welfare and condition of the horses. In fact, we remain fully committed to Saffie and our twelve horses currently under his care will remain as we are very confident Saffie will be reinstated and fully vindicated in the near future.

“White Abarrio will arrive at Belmont Park this morning to his new trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. to being preparing for the Metropolitan Mile on June 10, 2023.”

White Abarrio won a Gulfstream allowance/optional claiming race in his last start at Gulfstream on March 4, after running eighth in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S., presented by Baccarat. The allowance win was his first since taking the GI Florida Derby in April, 2022.

C2 Racing Stable is owned by Clint and Mark Cornett.

Joseph was suspended indefinitely by Churchill on May 4, two days before the Kentucky Derby, and his entrant, Lord Miles (Curlin) was scratched. “Given the unexplained sudden deaths, we have reasonable concerns about the condition of his horses, and decided to suspend him indefinitely until details are analyzed and understood,” said Bill Mudd, President and Chief Operating Officer of CDI. “The safety of our equine and human athletes and integrity of our sport is our highest priority. We feel these measures are our duty and responsibility.”

Unique Partnership of Breeders Brings Mind Control to New York

Tenacious to the end, Red Oak Stable and Madaket Stable's Mind Control (Stay Thirsty) closed out his career with a win in the 2022 GI Cigar Mile, his third Grade I win and his 11th black-type victory. In a remarkable 29 starts over five years, Mind Control amassed total winnings of $2,185,834. In that race, as in all of Mind Control's stakes wins, he beat an impressive field of competitors, including favored Zandon, White Abarrio, and Get Her Number. Big numbers, indeed.

Numbers, as it turns out, will also be critical to his next career, as the Red Oak Stables homebred will stand at Rockridge Stud for a partnership that includes Red Oak and Madaket Stable, who raced him in partnership, as well as almost every New York farm invested in the Thoroughbred breeding business, including Irish Hill Farm, Rockridge, Dutchess Views Stallions, Waldorf Farm, and Hidden Lake Farm. Shareholders also include Joe McMahon of McMahon Farm, Saratoga Glen, and New Hill Farm.

Out of a fellow Rockridge homebred Feel That Fire (Lightnin N Thunder), a stakes-winning half-sister to MSW & GSP King For A Day (Uncle Mo) and a full to MSW Ima Jersey Girl, “He is probably one of the better horses, if not the best horse, that has ever come to New York,” said Michael Lischin of Dutchess Views Farms. The winning of the GI Cigar Mile is a great prep for being a stallion.”

Speaking to the TDN after the Cigar Mile, Todd Pletcher, who began training Mind Control in 2020, said, “If you like horse racing, you've got to love this horse. He's cool. He's done it consistently year after year at multiple distances. He's a great horse to be able to train. He's remarkably consistent and shows up every morning.”

“When we got the partnership together, it grew very quickly because, just like anything else, word of mouth goes very quickly,” said Lere Visage, owner of Rockridge Stud. “These are the bigger farms, all bound together to support a horse that they all think is going to be legit and that can improve the state and improve the mare base that we have. There's never been a partnership like that done in New York with any of the farms.”

The partners said they were confident in the quality of Mind Control's first book. Just before breeding season, to boost the stallion's chances, partners and prospective supporters purchased additional mares in Kentucky. And the partners' phones ring constantly, they said.

“Several trainers have booked mares to Mind Control,” said Visage. “They saw him as a racehorse. With that much heart and stamina, this horse is worth taking a look at. Nothing like Mind Control has ever stood in New York.”

In impressive New York style, Mind Control took his first Grade I in the 2018 Hopeful S. at Saratoga and his second in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S., also at Saratoga. In his first start for Pletcher, Mind Control won the GII John A. Nerud S. He won the Parx Dirt Mile two starts later, was third in the 2022 GI Carter H. Two months after that, he beat Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) in Monmouth's GIII Salvator Mile. In his last start before the Cigar Mile, he finished a neck behind the leader in the Sept. 24 Parx Dirt Mile, but was promoted to first via DQ.

“He won from six furlongs to a mile,” said Lischin. “To win a Grade I race at seven furlongs at two and three, and then continue on with stakes wins every year and closing out with a Grade I stakes race at six and over $2 million is a great race record. He beat Knicks Go, Firenze Fire, Instagrand, Zandon, and Hot Rod Charlie, amongst numerous others.”

Bringing the New York farms together as a stallion just like he brought racing fans together in his career, Mind Control has created excitement in the New York Thoroughbred breeding scene.

“He comes with a lot of credentials and that's kind of a solid beginning to a horse,” said Visage. “It is also very exciting to see, and kind of refreshing to know, that the farms can all work together and, you know, support a horse that they feel is worth supporting.”

Mind Control is will stand at $8,500 LFSN.
