Uncle Mo Colt First to Seven Figures

An Uncle Mo colt already named Stop the Press made news Monday evening when garnering a winning bid of $1.5 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale from West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing. Consigned by Lane's End, agent as hip 68 on behalf of Jane Lyon's Summer Wind Equine, the Mar. 25 foal is a grandson of MGSW India (Hennessy), making his Tapit dam a half to Japanese MGISW Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}). He hails from the family of highest-level winners Rahy's Attorney, To Honor and Serve, Angela Renee, et al. Summer Wind will reportedly stay in on the colt. West Point, Woodford and Summer Wind are among the ownership group that campaign unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' and leading older horse Flightline (Tapit), who was also bred by Summer Wind and cost $1 million at this auction in 2019.

Quality Road Firster Runs to the Money in ‘Rising Star’ Fashion

Jace's Road (c, 2, Quality Road–Out Post, by Silver Deputy), a $510,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, put on a show at Ellis Park Saturday afternoon en route to 'TDN Rising Star' honors.

The bay worked four furlongs in :48 2/5 (2/90) at Brad Cox's Churchill Downs base July 29 and was hammered down to 7-5 favoritism while drawn on the outside in post nine against this deep-looking bunch.

He chased on the outside in third though an opening quarter in :22.47, loomed boldly under confident handling while three-wide on the turn for home and took off impressively down the stretch while under wraps to win going away by 6 1/4 lengths. Second-time starter Retained (Bayern) was second.

This is the 13th 'Rising Star' for Quality Road.

The multiple stakes-placed Out Post, from the same female family as champion Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy) and GISW Forest Secrets (Forest Wildcat), brought $250,000 from breeder Richard Santulli as a KEESEP yearling. After producing a filly by Curlin this year, the winner's dam was bred back to Quality Road.

Jace's Road is bred on a similar cross (Quality Road x Deputy Minister) as champion Abel Tasman and GISW Spring Quality.

Winning co-owner West Point Thoroughbreds was also represented by promising debut winner and $500,000 FTSAUG graduate Battle of Normandy (City of Light) in the opener on Saratoga's Whitney card.

Pricey City of Light Colt Graduates on Debut in Whitney Day Lidlifter

BATTLE OF NORMANDY (c, 2, City of Light–Adorable Miss {MSW, $162,590}, by Kitten's Joy), a $500,000 FTSAUG yearling, was drawn widest of all in post seven in the Whitney day opener and chased in an outside fifth rounding the clubhouse turn in this grassy debut run. The 3-1 shot stayed out in the clear in third down the backstretch, began to make his move while three-wide on the far turn and came charging down the stretch to forge past favored Alexis Zorba (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) to score by 2 1/4 lengths. He becomes the third winner for his freshman sire (by Quality Road). Two-time stakes winner on the lawn Adorable Miss, a full-sister to GSW Noble Beauty, brought $280,000 from Gage Hill Stable carrying Battle of Normandy in utero at the 2019 KEENOV sale. Her 3-year-old filly Veronica Greene (Tapit) came within a neck of graduating over the Saratoga lawn earlier this meet for Chad Brown. August 6 Insights: Justify Half-Brother to Commissioner Debuts

Shelling out a cool $675,000 for him at KEESEP, his pedigree warrants the implied expectations: out of GSP Flaming Heart (Touch Gold), it makes Hawker a half to GISP & MGSW Commissioner (A.P. Indy), GISP & GSW Laugh Track (Distorted Humor), and to the dam of MGISW Vino Rosso (Curlin). All three of the colt's closest female line dams have black-type victories to their name as well as being producers of black-type earners. John Sadler sends him to post here. To Hawker's inside, and only slightly less expensive, is the Bob Baffert-trained Carmel Road (Quality Road). Second dam Little Belle (A.P. Indy) won the GI Ashland S. before going on to a runner-up performance in the GI Kentucky Oaks and Coaching Club American Oaks. That one is the full-sister to the granddam of Munnyfor Ro (Munnings), Canadian champion 3-year-old filly of 2021. The partnership of Repole Stable and St Elias Stable will send out a one-two punch in coupled entries Crupi (Curlin) and Point Proven (Gun Runner) for Todd Pletcher. Out of 'TDN Rising Star' Cherry Lodge (Bernardini), half-sister to GISW Stormello (Stormy Atlantic) and his full-brother GSW My Best Brother, the dam's full-sibling Gala Award annexed the GIII Palm Beach S. while half-sister Atlantic Voyage (Stormy Atlantic) produced Canadian champion 2 & 3-year-old filly Curlin's Voyage (Curlin). Sundance will be his dam's first to make it to the races and is in Rodolphe Brisset's tutelage.
