Unbeaten Happy Saver Gives Pletcher First Jockey Club Gold Cup Triumph

Saving ground throughout under Irad Ortiz Jr., Wertheimer and Frere's homebred Happy Saver outdueled fellow 3-year-old Mystic Guide and 3-5 favorite Tacitus with a determined stretch run to win Saturday's Grade 1, $250,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Now a perfect four-for-four after his first graded stakes win, Happy Saver earned a fees-paid berth for the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Classic after the Win and You're In Breeders' Cup Challenge Series victory.

Happy Saver covered 1 1/4 miles on a fast main track in 2:02.09 and paid $6.70 to win. Mystic Guide, ridden by John Velazquez and coming off a victory in the G2 Jim Dandy, finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length. Tacitus, who set an uncontested pace under Jose Ortiz, finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in third, with Prioritize fourth and  Name Changer fifth.

The victory was the first in the Jockey Club Gold Cup for Pletcher, who trained Vino Rosso, first across the finish but disqualified and placed second for stretch interference in last year's running. Vino Rosso went on to win the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic.

“Not only had we not won it,” said Pletcher, “we'd suffered some really close defeats and then throw in a disqualification on top of that and it's been a frustrating one over the years. This one was fun. It's one of the races that has been hard on us. We've had some tough losses and it was very fulfilling to win it today.”

Happy Saver broke alertly, but Jose Ortiz seemed intent on getting the early lead aboard Tacitus, who was allowed to set soft fractions of :24.93, :49.68 and 1:13.61 for the opening six furlongs.  Happy Saver tucked in just behind the leader, while Mystic Guide was to his outside and in the clear in the long run down the backstretch.

Mystic Guide moved up to challenge Tacitus with a quarter mile to run, the mile clocked in 1:37.25, while Irad Ortiz Jr. kept  Happy Saver glued to the fence, waiting for daylight. That opportunity came when Tacitus and Mystic Guide straightened away into the stretch, and Happy Saver quickly accelerated through the opening, setting the stage for a three-horse duel down the lane.

Tacitus was the first to retreat, then Happy Saver showed his superiority over Mystic Guide, inching away in the final sixteenth of a mile for the winning margin.

“He has a big heart, like I told Todd in the paddockmk,” Ortiz said of Happy Saver. “He's a fighter. Every time he has a horse in front of him and when you ask him to go, he passes the horse and then he puts his ears up. He still had something after he went by Johnny's horse.

“It was emotional. I wanted to win it so bad. Last year, I got DQ'd and that was for Todd, too. He's a cool horse, a special horse. I rode him first time out and we knew he was a nice horse. Todd has always liked him.

“This race was uncomfortable for him. I wasn't really happy down in there but I didn't really have any other options. I just had to go with the flow of the race. I thought we were going to be on the lead and I was surprised to look up and see Tacitus on the lead early. I can't take back but I can't go head and head so I just let my horse be there. I used him a little on the backside to stay close and go from there.

“I had horse. I just didn't have anywhere to go. I had a little space inside but i didn't know if Jose [Ortiz, aboard Tacitus] had a lot of horse and I didn't want to check him because his horse has a big stride, so I just waited. When we turned for home, I knew he'd be there for me and if the hole was still open, I'd go for it. If not, I'd go around Johnny [Velazquez aboard Mystic Guide]. But it was still open, so I went for it. When I needed him, he was there for me.”

“Watching the race, I thought he was a little uncomfortable inside there,” Pletcher said of Happy Saver. “He was in a tricky spot. Johnny [Velazquez, aboard Mystic Guide] had first run on him and was able to keep him in there. To his credit, that was a pretty game performance to come up the inside there in his fourth start and first time against older horses going a mile and a quarter. To do that after breaking his maiden on June 20th is hard to do.

“I was very proud of the horse and his performance. I'm happy for the connections, the Wertheimers have been loyal supporters for many years and I'm appreciative of that. It's great to get a Grade 1 win for them. He's by a Derby winner [Super Saver (2010)] we trained, so it's fun all the way around.

“When we started getting serious with his breezes, he was breezing with Dr Post and some horses we knew had talent and he was staying right with them, but I couldn't have imagined on June 20 he'd be winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup and be 4-for-4. That's hard to do, but it's a tribute to his quality.”

Happy Saver, bred in Kentucky, was produced from Happy Week, a daughter of Distorted Humor. Happy Saver's third dam is Weekend Surprise, a broodmare of the year whose offspring include Horse of the Year and leading sire A.P. Indy.

Pletcher said he would evaluate how Happy Saver comes out of the race before deciding on whether or not he goes to the Breeders' Cup.

“First and foremost we'll see how he bounces out of this race,” said Pletcher. “It was a tough race and he's still a lightly raced horse. That's part of the reason we decided to come here instead of going to the Preakness. We'll enjoy this for the moment and talk to the Wertheimers and come up with a plan. I wouldn't say we're definite for it, but I wouldn't rule it out either.”

Munnings ‘Rising Star’ Gets the Bob in Catch a Glimpse

‘TDN Rising Star’ Alda got up in the shadow of the wire to take Sunday’s Catch a Glimpse S. narrowly over a fellow granddaughter of Speightstown in Dreaming of Drew (Speightster). A fast-finishing third against the boys going five grassy furlongs at Belmont June 12, the chestnut broke through convincingly over an extra eighth of a mile there July 9.

Drifting up to 5-2 at the off after vying for favoritism early with big-figure second-out graduate Dreaming of Drew, the Wertheimer homebred dropped out the back early and a snug Steven Bahen hold. She scraped paint while advancing into the stretch, and drafted behind Dreaming of Drew at the head of the lane as that one tried desperately to get off the inside and reel in pacesetter Illegal Smile (Ire) (Camacho {GB}). Alda veered out wide as Dreaming of Drew struck the front, and she kept coming to get in a photo that to the naked eye seemed like it may have gone the other way.

“I had talked to [trainer Graham Motion] this morning and I watched her races yesterday,” said Bahen. “She’s got a real big kick and we discussed that we should just be off the pack, three or four off would be nice. I ended up being a little further back than I wanted to, and she gave me that run she has.”

The winner’s dam is a full to two-turn MGSW Exhi. She produced an Into Mischief colt in 2019 and Tapit colt this season. Further down the page are a number of Canadian champions from the 1970s.

Pletcher Hoping Alydar Will Serve As Breakthrough Win For Spinoff

Wertheimer and Frere's Grade 2-placed homebred Spinoff, a veteran of last year's Triple Crown trail, swept to the lead on the far turn and turned back favored Endorsed through the stretch to earn his first stakes victory in Sunday's eighth running of the $85,000 Alydar at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

It was the third career win in the Alydar for Saratoga's leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. as well as Todd Pletcher, who moved into first place in the meet's trainer standings with his 16th victory at the summer stand.

Sent off at 3-1, Spinoff returned $8.40 for a $2 win bet. The 4-year-old Hard Spun colt covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.60 over a fast main track.

Spinoff won for the first time in four tries this year, having been beaten a neck when second in the Sunday Silence on May 17 over a sloppy track at Gulfstream Park. After coming up empty in a one-mile optional claiming allowance last out on July 2 at Belmont Park, he bounced back with a huge effort in the Alydar.

“He ran really well here last year in a mile and an eighth two-other-than and had a pretty rough trip last time and I think he ran better than it looked on paper,” Pletcher said. “We had good spacing to this and we had been pointing to it for a while. He's trained well and I thought we were going to get a good setup. The race kind of unfolded exactly how Irad and I talked about before the race and it's nice when it falls into place.”

Ortiz, Jr. settled Spinoff in the clear three wide as Its All Relevant, a winner of two straight and three of his last four races, was in front through a quarter-mile in 24.97 seconds and a half in 49.57, under moderate pressure from Bodexpress. Its All Relevant's lead shrunk as the field hit the turn and Spinoff and Bodexpress ranged up to challenge.

Spinoff came off the turn in front and was set down for a drive to the wire by Ortiz, Jr. as Endorsed, the 3-5 favorite who ran fourth in last year's Grade 1 Runhappy Travers, tried to mount his bid on the far outside but was unable to gain any ground. Spinoff crossed the wire 2 ¾ lengths in front, while there were 4 ½ lengths between Endorsed and Bodexpress in third followed by Backsideofthemoon and Its All Relevant. Tenfold was scratched.

Third in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special as a 2-year-old in 2018, Spinoff ran second in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby to punch his ticket to the 2019 Kentucky Derby where he ran 18th. After skipping the Preakness, the chestnut showed up in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes and ran sixth, beaten only three lengths, before a failed bid on turf in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby. His sophomore season ended when he rolled home 5 ¾ lengths the best in a nine-furlong optional claiming allowance last August at Saratoga.

“It's rewarding,” Pletcher said of the Alydar win. “He's a horse we always had high hopes for. We placed him pretty ambitiously. He's always been right on the verge of breaking through so hopefully, as a 4-year-old, maybe he can take it to the next level.”

Pletcher also won the first running of the Alydar in 2013 with Vitoria Olimpica, and followed up with Rally Cry in 2017. Ortiz, Jr. was first with Farhaan in 2014 and Royal Posse in 2016.

“My horse ran a great race today,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “Last time, he got in a little trouble. He relaxed so well today, and the race set up for him. In the turn, he relaxed in the clear and when I asked him to go, I got plenty from him.”

Live racing returns Wednesday to Saratoga to open the fourth full week of racing with a 10-race program that includes the 104 th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Adirondack at 6 ½ furlongs for 2-year-old fillies in Race 9 at 5:17 p.m. First post is 12:50 p.m. Eastern.

Super Saver Colt Stays Two Turns; Earns Rising Stardom at Saratoga

Wertheimer and Frere homebred Happy Saver (Super Saver) made good on a flashy debut last month and handled nine panels at Saratoga like he was just getting going to garner the ‘TDN Rising Star’ moniker Sunday afternoon. The Todd Pletcher pupil aired by 5 1/2 lengths at first asking going seven furlongs at Belmont June 20, and was even-money against a solid-looking group of winners this time around. He broke alertly, but was out-footed into the first turn and took up a ground-saving spot in third. Ridden along to avoid getting shuffled back into the second bend after a :48.25 half, he looked briefly like he might be coming up empty as Irad Ortiz, Jr. was all over him to get going as noses pointed for home. Happy Saver tipped out wide while figuring out his leads, soon found another gear kicked on with a flourish to inhale Beau Luminarie (I Want Revenge) and canter away a geared-down four-length winner in 1:49.93.

“He’s been training great–he’s [GI Belmont S. runner-up and GI Haskell S. third] Dr Post (Quality Road)’s workmate and they’ve been working head and head, so we had confidence that his first out [effort] was legitimate,” Pletcher told Acacia Courtney on the Saratoga Live broadcast. “You’re always a little concerned when you’re stretching out off of one race to a mile and an eighth, but he’d trained really well and he’s got a great personality–he’s very relaxed. I got a little worried around the first turn, it got a little crowded and we weren’t exactly where we thought we’d be, but he seemed settled and I was really impressed with his last eighth of a mile.”

While Pletcher acknowledged that the GI Runhappy Travers S. in two weeks would likely come up too quickly, he mentioned the GII Jim Dandy S. Sept. 5 as a possible next spot for Happy Saver.

The winner’s dam Happy Week (Distorted Humor) was a MSP sprinter for these connections and was disqualified from a third-place run in the 2011 GII Shuvee H. over a one-turn mile. She produced a Candy Ride (Arg) filly in 2019 and sold for $30,000 to John Ropes at last  year’s Keeneland November sale carrying a full-sister to Happy Saver. Happy Saver’s third dam is Weekend Surprise (Secretariat), best known as the dam of A.P. Indy.
