Preakness Winner War Of Will To Stand At Claiborne Farm Upon Retirement

Claiborne Farm has purchased an interest in War of Will, a dual surface Grade 1 winner and American classic champion.

The son of Claiborne's emerging sire of sires War Front scored his most recent victory in the July 10 Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland, going a mile on the grass. War of Will will stand at the Paris, Ky., farm upon his retirement from racing, Claiborne announced July 30.

“War of Will has an outstanding pedigree, and combined with his race record, he should be very appealing to breeders. He's a classic winner on dirt at three and a Grade 1 winner on turf at four, which places him in rare company,” said Claiborne's Walker Hancock.  “War Front is one of the most successful sires of his generation and there is no doubt he is becoming a sire of sires.  We believe War of Will has the capability to follow his father's success.”

To date, 4-year-old War of Will has earnings of over $1,796,000 and four graded stakes wins for trainer Mark Casse and owner Gary Barber.

“I am very proud to be standing War of Will at Claiborne alongside his famous father,” said Gary Barber. “War of Will has a special place in my heart having brought so much joy to me and my family. He is a once in a lifetime horse.”

In just his second career start, War of Will was introduced to Grade 1 level company, running a determined second in the Summer Stakes (G1) at Woodbine.

Coming off a maiden victory to end his 2-year-old campaign, War of Will kicked off his 3-year-old campaign brilliantly, with decisive back-to-back graded stakes victories going over a mile on dirt. With Tyler Gaffalione in the irons, the son of War Front easily bested subsequent Grade 1 winner Hog Creek Hustle and Group 2 winner Plus Que Parfait to take the G3 LeComte Stakes by open lengths. One month later, eventual Kentucky Derby winner Country House, and multiple graded stakes winners Owendale and Mr. Money proved to be no match for War of Will in the G2 Risen Star Stakes.

Following a contentious Kentucky Derby, War of Will became trainer Mark Casse's first classic winner with a triumphant victory in the Preakness Stakes.

In this year's Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland on July 10, War of Will moved into the prestigious group of dual surface Grade 1 winners. Going one mile on the firm turf, the now 4-year-old War of Will fended off Group 1 winner Without Parole and two-time Grade 1 winner Raging Bull.

“I've been fortunate enough in my career to be around a lot of good horses, but I have to put War of Will right there at the top. He has a special place in my heart,” said trainer Mark Casse. “He's a class act. There's a reason we call him 'WOW.' It's not just because of his initials. Everything he does is a 'WOW.' The way he looks. The way he trains, and his pedigree. I'm excited to see him go to Claiborne and follow in his father's footsteps. Our plan is to point towards the Woodbine Mile next, and then hopefully the Breeders' Cup.”

Bred in Kentucky by Flaxman Holdings, War of Will is out of the stakes-winning Sadler's Wells mare Visions of Clarity, who is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner and Breeders' Cup Mile winner Spinning World. Visions of Clarity also produced Grade 1 winner Pathfork and multiple stakes winner Tacticus.

War of Will is just one of sire War Front's 21 Grade 1 winners. An international super sire on all fronts, War Front (Danzig – Starry Dreamer) has seven million-dollar earners and is quickly emerging as a sire of sires.

His sons include Grade 1 winner Declaration of War, who sired two-time graded stakes winner Silver Prospector and three-time graded stakes winner Decorated Invader; five-time graded stakes winner The Factor, the number-one fifth-crop sire of multiple Grade 1 winners, plus recent Grade 2 winner Factor This; Summer Front, a four-time graded stakes winner himself, sired recent Grade 2 winner Speaktomeofsummer and Grade 2-winning Kentucky Derby hopeful Ete Indien; and three-time Grade 1-winning champion Air Force Blue, who's first crop are now 2-year-olds, sired recent debut winner Beauty Queen.

War of Will's 2021 stud fee will be announced following the Breeders' Cup.

War Front’s Battleground Bounds to Vintage Triumph

Fresh from an impressive tally in Royal Ascot’s Listed Chesham S., Coolmore’s Battleground (War Front) emulated last year’s winner of that contest–Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal)–by doubling up in Tuesday’s G2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage S. at Goodwood. Employing patient tactics trapped three wide in sixth after a level break in the seven-furlong contest, the 13-8 favourite made smooth headway on the bridle in the straight to challenge at the quarter-mile marker and he was driven out once seizing control soon after to deny G2 Superlative S. runner-up Devious Company (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) by two lengths. Newmarket maiden winner Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) ran on well from the rear to finish 1 1/4 lengths further adrift in third. “He travelled very easily through the race, he picked up Devious Company quite quickly and was just doing enough in front,” explained winning rider Ryan Moore. “He’s a beautiful horse, he has plenty of speed and we’ll see how he develops.”

The May-foaled bay had opened up with a maiden fifth over six furlongs in his June 8 debut at Naas and jumped to the head of all ante-post lists as favourite for next year’s G1 2000 Guineas in the aftermath of this latest victory. His short-term target is back on home soil in The Curragh’s Sept. 13 G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S., with trainer Aidan O’Brien explaining, “This was his first run after [Royal] Ascot, we were very happy with him at home and we thought it was a lovely race for him to get experience from. The ground was lovely and safe and Ryan [Moore] was very happy with him. We think his next run will be the National S., everything being well, but he is a horse we have always loved. He is a big, powerful horse and very genuine, and that’s the way his dam was as well. We think he will be a miler. He is a strong traveller, but he is by War Front, and being out of Found we thought he might get a mile and that is what we would be hoping for. Obviously all the 2-year-olds got a little bit messed up, with the start of the season not being there, and then we had to rush some of them to get them to Ascot. A lot of stuff wasn’t ideal, but he was lovely. It is very early for horses. Some will improve, some will stand still and some will go back, but we are delighted with this horse.”

Battleground is the first and only foal to date produced by G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, GI Breeders’ Cup Turf and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bred to Justify last year. Found is a daughter of G1 Lockinge S. and G1 Matron S. victress Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab), herself out of stakes-winning G3 Prix du Calvados third Malefemmena (Ire) (Nordico), and thus a full-sister to G3 C L Weld Parks S. winner Magical Dream (Ire) and G3 Give Thanks S. winner Best in the World (Ire). His G3 Athasi S.-winning fourth dam Martinova (Ire) (Martinmas {GB}) ran third in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and produced MGSW sire Export Price (Fr) (Habitat).

Halladay Will Try To Keep Hot Streak Going In Bernard Baruch

Harrell Ventures' two-time stakes winner Halladay has done nothing but improve in his last two starts and will attempt to maintain his good form when taking on five others, including four stakes winners, in Sunday's 61st running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Bernard Baruch for 3-year-olds and upward over the inner turf at Saratoga Race Course.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, who saddled Dominus to a Bernard Baruch score in 2012, Halladay arrives at Sunday's test off a gate-to-wire triumph in the Sunshine Forever over a firm turf at Gulfstream Park, where he registered a career-best 103 Beyer Speed Figure over eventual Grade 1-winner Aquaphobia and stablemate Social Paranoia, who won the Grade 3 Poker at Belmont Park two starts later.

Prior to his last effort, he defeated allowance optional claiming company over the South Florida oval on April 4 in similar frontrunning fashion over multiple-stakes winner and next-out winner Kroy.

The consistent gray or roan son of War Front defeated stakes company for the first time in the Tropical Park Derby at Gulfstream Park on December 28 and has put together a highly consistent record of 12-5-2-4. His only off-the-board effort was three starts back in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay on February 8, where he tracked the pace in fifth, appeared to be in a winning position from the three path coming around the far turn and was a bit green at the top of the stretch and flattened out in the final eighth of a mile.

“So far, the turf course has not been kind to horses close to the pace,” Pletcher said. “That's really my only concern. The horse is training super and we're excited about Sunday. He's in great form and seems to be steadily improving. Obviously, he took to the turf at Gulfstream quite well so I'm hoping that he can apply that to this turf course.”

Jockey Luis Saez was aboard for Halladay's last two winning efforts and retains the mount from the outermost post 6.

Trainer Chad Brown will saddle a pair of formidable contenders for the Bernard Baruch in the lightly-raced Good Governance and graded stakes winner Olympico.

Owned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, Good Governance broke his maiden last August over the Spa's inner turf before finishing a close second to Global Access in the Grade 3 Saranac. The 4-year-old son of Kingman did not race again until June of this year, where he defeated winners by 3 ¾ lengths over the Widener turf course at Belmont Park and registered a career best 95 Beyer.

“He's lightly raced but he's very talented,” Brown said. “Hopefully he's up to the challenge. He has a nice race under his belt and he looks good.”

Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., aboard in all three of his starts, will retain the mount from post 2 as he attempts a third Bernard Baruch triumph.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Wonder Stables Olympico will seek his first victory since lighting up the tote board at 18-1 in his North American debut in last year's Grade 2 Fort Marcy at Belmont Park.

The 5-year-old French-bred son of Rajsaman was fifth beaten 7 ½ lengths in last year's Bernard Baruch which was won by Qurbaan. He will be making his seasonal bow with his last start being a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Knickerbocker over the inner turf at Belmont Park on October 14.

“He seems to be doing fine,” Brown said.

Jockey Joel Rosario will seek back-to-back Bernard Baruch triumphs when piloting Olympico from post 5.

Trainer Mike Maker also saddles a pair of contenders in graded stakes winners Somelikeithotbrown and Mr Dumas.

Owned by Skychai Racing and David Koenig, Somelikeithotbrown, a 4-year-old Big Brown bay, was third in the Grade 2 Fort Marcy on June 6 last out.

“It was a shorter field [in the G2 Fort Marcy] and we had another horse [Temple] in the race and we didn't want them to get into a duel,” said Maker's assistant trainer Nolan Ramsey. “I thought he ran an amazing race. He probably went a little quicker than I'd have liked him to early and if he'd been able to back off the pace just a little bit, he might have been able to hang tough for the win.”

Somelikeithotbrown will seek a second graded stakes triumph after winning the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks over the all-weather surface at Turfway Park in March 2019. He boasts the highest amount of lifetime earnings in the field with $464,338 and has finished in the money nine out of 12 times.

“He's doing very well right now,” Ramsey said. “He's always been a barn favorite and he's a horse that just seems to show up every time. He's had a number of setbacks throughout his career, but he's tough as nails and I expect a big run from him on Sunday.”

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who was aboard for his Jeff Ruby Steaks score, will be reunited with Somelikeithotbrown from post 3.

Maker also sends out Mr Dumas, who won last year's Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf at Churchill Downs while being trained by John Ortiz. The bay son of Majesticperfection defeated a salty allowance optional claiming group over the Churchill Downs turf two starts back which included graded stakes winner Casa Creed.

The WSS Racing and Hooties Racing owned four-time winner will break from post 4 and will be piloted by Manny Franco.

Completing the field is Juddmonte Farms' Seismic Wave for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who will attempt his sixth win in the Bernard Baruch.

The chestnut son of Tapit is a two-time stakes winner having won the English Channel on October 26 at Belmont Park in the final start of 2019, as well as the Cutler Bay last March at Gulfstream Park in his stakes debut.

Last out, Seismic Wave was second, beaten a length to Social Paranoia, in the Grade 3 Poker.

Jockey Jose Ortiz will pilot Seismic Wave from post 1.

The Bernard Baruch pays homage to the philanthropist, financier and thoroughbred owner who served as an advisor to late wartime presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. As an owner, Baruch campaigned horses under the name Kershaw Stables, and won the 1927 Carter with Happy Argo.

The Bernard Baruch is slated as Race 9 on Sunday's 10-race card, which offers a first post of 1:10 p.m. Eastern. Saratoga Live will present daily television coverage of the 40-day summer meet on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.
