Gulfstream: Rainbow 6 Pool Guaranteed At $700,000 Friday, Mandatory Payout Saturday

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $700,000 for Friday's program at Gulfstream Park. If there is no single winner Friday, there will be a mandatory payout of the pool Saturday on Florida Sire Stakes Day.

The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for 12 consecutive racing days since a June 30 mandatory payout.

Saturday's program will kickoff the lucrative FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes with the $100,000 Dr. Fager and $100,000 Desert Vixen, but first comes Friday's Rainbow 6 sequence that will span Races 5-10 on the twilight program with a first-race post time of 2 p.m.

A 6 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance in Race 7 will headline the Rainbow 6 sequence and will feature the return of Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's Isolate. The 3-year-old son of Mark Valeski is scheduled to make his first start since finishing third in the Nashua (G3) at Aqueduct last November. The Kathy Ritvo trainee entered the mile Nashua off a pair of victories at Gulfstream to kick off his career, including a 10-length romp in a six-furlong optional claiming allowance.

On Saturday the Dr..Fager and the $100,000 Desert Vixen for fillies, both to be contested at six furlongs, will co-headline the first leg of the series that will continue Aug. 28 with the $200,000 Affirmed and the $200,000 Susan's Girl for fillies, both slated for seven furlongs, and Sept. 25 with the $400,000 In Reality and the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies, both to be run around two turns at 1 1/16 miles.

Stonehedge Farm LLC's Gil and Marilyn Campbell, who have won 15 FSS races, expect to be represented in both the Dr. Fager and the Desert Vixen, which they won last year with Breeze On By and Go Jo Jo Go, respectively. Michael Yates-trained Dean Delivers, a son of Cajun Breeze who won his debut by 7 ½ lengths in a five-furlong maiden special weight race June 26, is scheduled to run in the Dr. Fager. Kathleen O'Connell-trained Silver Smile, a daughter of Long Island Sound who scored by 3 ½ lengths in her June 3 debut, is slated to run in the Desert Vixen.

Breeze Easy LLC and trainer Joe Orseno are also expected to be represented in both first-leg stakes. Hope in Him, a son of Chitu who was purchased for $190,000 at the OBS March sale, enters the Dr. Fager off a front-running debut victory by five lengths June 4. Stone Beauty, a daughter of Neolithic, is slated to make the second start of her career in the Desert Vixen off a 1 ¾-length debut score July 16.

Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's Big and Classy, Lea Farms LLC's Lightening Larry and Bella Inizio Farm's Laki Lio, all coming off solid maiden victories, are among the likely starters in the Dr. Fager.

Roger Laurin's Demurely, Quintessential Racing Florida LLC's Royal Rocker, and Champion Equine's My Sassenach are among the fillies expected to contest the Desert Vixen.

The Florida Sire Stakes has a rich history dating back to 1982, when it was created by Ocala Breeder and owner Dan Lasater. The six-race series has produced six Eclipse Award champions: Awesome Feather (2010 Juvenile Filly), Big Drama (2010 Sprint), Holy Bull (1994 Horse of the Year and 3-Year-Old Male), Smile (1986 Sprint), Brave Raj (1986 Juvenile Filly) and Not Surprising (1995 Sprint Champion).

Gulfstream Park: Guaranteed Pool Of $500,000 In Friday’s Rainbow 6

Gulfstream's nine-race program Friday features four turf races, a maiden special weight event for 2-year-old fillies, another maiden special weight event for 2-year-olds, and a guaranteed pool in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 of $500,000.

The very competitive afternoon card begins at 2 p.m.

The sequence begins with Race 4, a mile claiming event for fillies and mares at a mile on the main track and a 9-5 favorite in I'm a Coco Pebbles. The fifth race features a dozen claimers going a mile on the turf, including stakes winner High Noon Rider and stakes placed Harbour Master, Ambassador Jim and Rocket Joe Copper.

Race 7 brings together 2-year-olds going 7 ½ furlongs on the turf. The field includes Winging It, a son of Into Mischief who brought $200,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sale in June, and Fivefive Six Champ, a son of First Dude making his third start after bringing $165,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sale of 2-year-olds in March. Pharoah's Prophecy makes his debut for trainer Mike Maker while More Adventurous, a son of More Than Ready, goes out second time for David Fawkes.

The Rainbow 6 sequence ends with Race 9, a $12,500 claimer at a mile on the turf for fillies and mares. Earnestine N Hazel is a 7-5 morning line favorite who drops in company and goes out first time for leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

Racing continues Saturday with a 12:20 first race post. The 12-race program will include the $75,000 Monroe for fillies and mares on the turf.

Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Saratoga, Woodbine, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring action from historic Saratoga Race Course and stakes competition from Woodbine Racetrack and Monmouth Park.

Woodbine will commence the sequence with the Grade 2, $175,000 Nassau for older fillies and mares going one mile on the turf, in Race 6 at 3:43 p.m. Eastern. Jolie Olimpica, a Group 1-winner in her native Brazil, will complete for trainer Josie Carroll as part of a 12-horse field. Abscond, the winner of the Grade 1 Natalma at Woodbine two years ago, is also entered. Merveilleux, the winner of the $250,000 Wonder Where at Woodbine in October, is also part of the field.

The first of three races at Saratoga will make up the second leg, as a six-furlong maiden sprint for juveniles will go off in Race 6 at 3:55 pm. Chileno, trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, ran fourth as the favorite in his debut in June at Churchill Downs. But the $375,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase will look to make amends, breaking from post 4. Other big-priced yearlings from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in the field include the Chad Brown-trained Watasha [$450,000], who will be making his first start. Volcanic [$230,000] ran fourth last month at Churchill in his first start and will break from post 8 for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, while Faith Runner [$300,000] makes his bow for conditioner Dallas Stewart out of post 6.

Monmouth will get in on the action in Race 9 as a field of New Jersey-bred 3-year-olds and up will compete at one mile on the turf in the $85,000 Irish War Cry Handicap at 4:05 p.m. Optic Way, second in the John J. Reilly Handicap on Independence Day at Monmouth Park, will go for trainer Derek Ryan, drawing post 2. Prendimi, third in the Reilly, will rematch Optic Way, drawing post 9 for trainer Luis Carvajal, Jr.

Saratoga will close out the Cross Country Pick 5 with the final two legs, starting with a full field of 12 in a 1 1/16-mile Mellon turf contest for 3-year-olds in Race 7 at 4:29 p.m. Space Launch, the third-place finisher in the Awad in October at Belmont, is 1-0-2 through his first three career starts for trainer Christophe Clement and drew post 11. Hombre, trained by Barclay Tagg, won going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Belmont last month in his maiden-breaking victory. He will depart post 4.

The finale will be Saratoga's Race 8 at 5:03 p.m., when Split Then Double will try to play a winning hand in the one-mile inner turf contest for maiden fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. The Brown-trained Split Then Double enters off back-to-back runner-up efforts at Belmont Park. Baby Blythe, trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, was third in her debut in December at Aqueduct Racetrack and enters off a seven-month layoff to make her sophomore debut.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Colonial Downs Meet Begins with Record Opening Day Handle

Colonial Downs kicked off its 2021 racing season Monday with a record opening day handle of $2.66 million, spurred by a four-pack of $100,000 Virginia-restricted turf stakes races, and the return of fans to the New Kent track now in its third year under ownership of the Colonial Downs Group.
