Louisiana Downs has received approval from the Louisiana State Racing Commission (LSRC) to offer a mandatory payout on their Pick 5 Wager, which will cover races three through seven on Louisiana Cup Day, Saturday, Aug. 21.

There will be carryover of $349,763 heading into Louisiana Cup Day. First post is 2:45 pm (Central) for the seven-race card which features six stakes for accredited Louisiana-breds with purses of $50,000 each.

The Pick 5, which is offered daily for a minimum wager of .50 cents, covers the following races:

Race 3 $50,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff

Race 4 $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile

Race 5 $50,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint

Race 6 $50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic

Race 7 $50,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

“We approached the racing commission last week when the Pick 5 carryover began to grow,” said David Heitzmann, Louisiana Downs Director of Racing. “Louisiana Cup Day is an exceptional showcase for Louisiana Thoroughbreds and offers black-type purses for the breeders as well as excellent wagering opportunities for our horseplayers. We look forward to a great afternoon!”

Louisiana Downs track announcer John McGary and regional racing publicist Martha Claussen will conduct a free handicapping seminar at 1:00 pm in the Inside Rail, located on the first floor of the grandstand. They will offer analysis and their selections for each of the races and Pick 5 on the Louisiana Cup Day card.

In addition, contributing handicappers Rachel McLaughlin of Indiana Grand, NHC Hall of Fame champion Trey Stiles and Nick Tammaro, an eight-time NHC qualifier and morning-line oddsmaker, will share their Pick 5 tickets on Twitter.

Charles Town To Offer Multiple Guaranteed Pools, Mandatory Pick 6 Payout On Classic Night

In addition to 13 races worth in excess of $2 million in purses, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races will also be offering a series of quality wagering opportunities for horseplayers on its Charles Town Classic card coming up on Friday, Aug. 27.

Both the late, all-stakes Pick 4 and Pick 5 on the Charles Town Classic card will come with $100,000 guarantees, where the track will supplement the difference in either pool if less than $100,000 is wagered. The Pick 4, which covers the final four races on the Classic card, and the Pick 5 covering the final five paid out $380.00 and $1,466.15 respectively for a 50-cent bet on the 2020 Classic card, despite 50-cent win parlays for each sequence returning less than half those amounts.

In addition to the multiple guaranteed pools, Charles Town has also scheduled a mandatory payout of the Charles Town 6-12 carryover which currently stands at $21,243 with 4 cards remaining prior to its distribution. The Charles Town 6-12 is a jackpot style Pick 6 covering the final six races on each Charles Town card and carries a low 12-percent takeout.

Due to the low takeout and size of the carryover, the mandatory payouts of the Charles Town 6-12 have typically resulted in a players' advantage of in upwards of 13% paid out on top of the gross pool on the night of the distribution.

The first race on Charles Town Classic day is slated for 5:00 P.M EST, with the $800,000 Charles Town Classic carrying a tentative post time of 10:18 P.M.

$1 Million Jackpot Bet Up For Grabs Thursday At Del Mar

The featured attraction on this Thursday's Del Mar card is a one-mile turf allowance race for 3-year-olds that has drawn 13 runners, though only nine of them will be able to go postward with the rail out at its maximum extension of 30 feet, making for a snug fit on the seven-eighths oval. It will go as the eighth and last race on the day's card.

But the co-feature of the afternoon no doubt will be those racing fans trying to take down the track's Pick Six Single Ticket Jackpot Wager which, after going unsolved for 12 straight days, will offer Thursday racegoers a chance to take down a prize of $1,127,460. The bet will be conducted on Races 3 through 8. So with first post set for 2 p.m., the Pick Six opener will go at approximately 3 p.m.

Two colts who finished second and fourth in the opening day Oceanside Stakes appear likely to draw the most attention in the $72,000 Thursday headliner. They would be Hronis Racing's Crew Dragon and Reddam Racing's Hockey Dad.

The former, a son of Exaggerator, came running late in the one-mile Oceanside and just missed by a head. It was the chestnut's first start for his new connections, which includes trainer John Sadler. He'd been racing in the east previously where he'd put together a win, a second and four thirds in six outings. Umberto Rispoli rode him in the Oceanside and he'll be back up on Thursday.

Hockey Dad showed a good turn of foot in the Oceanside, leading the race for the start to deep stretch where he gave way late and finished fourth, though only a half-length off the winner. Hockey Dad, a California homebred by Nyquist, has three wins in seven lifetime starts. Regular rider Mario Gutierrez will be back up once again Thursday.

Here's the full field for the feature from the rail out with riders:

Hockey Dad; Crew Dragon; Rockingham Ranch's Numbero Dix (Flavien Prat); Gary Barber's Laker Mamba (Abel Cedillo); Mt Brillant Farm and Ranch's War Machine (Trevor McCarthy); Holly and David Wilson's Barraza (Kent Desormeaux); Jones, Nentwig or Pagano, et al's Swiss Swoo (Tiago Pereira); Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Cotopaxi (Drayden Van Dyke), and Amo Racing's The Hulk (Kyle Frey).

There are also four also-eligibles in the lineup who'll need a withdrawal from the main body of the race in order to run. They are:

Isa Salman Al Khalifa's Mohawk King (Juan Hernandez); Lea Farms' Fuego Caliente (Jose Valdiva, Jr.); STD Racing Stable, Logan or Miller, et al's Optimistic Valor (Joe Bravo), and Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Dicey Mo Chara (Tyler Baze).

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Saratoga, Woodbine, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring four graded stakes, with racing action at Saratoga Race Course, Woodbine Racetrack and Monmouth Park.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Monmouth will start the action with the Grade 3, $250,000 Monmouth Oaks for sophomore fillies going 1 1/16 miles in Race 10 at 4:33 p.m. Eastern. Midnight Obsession, the runner-up in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks on July 3, will look to earn her first stakes win after back-back second-place finishes following two straight wins to begin her career for trainer John Servis. Her stablemate, Leader of the Band, was third in the 1 1/16-mile Delaware Oaks, giving Servis two formidable contenders. Orbs Baby Girl, sixth in the Delaware Oaks, will also compete for trainer Anthony Margotta, Jr. Allworthy, for conditioner Saffie Joseph, Jr., has won her last two starts at Gulfstream Park as she readies for her stakes bow.

The first of three graded stakes at historic Saratoga will start with the Grade 1, $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap for 3-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs in Race 8 at 5:03 p.m. Defending Champion Sprinter Whitmore is still a force to reckon with as an 8-year-old, and the Ron Moquett trainee will look to add to his 15 career wins. Accomplishing that feat will be a tall order, as nine-time graded stakes-winner Firenze Fire goes out for trainer Kelly Breen. Firenze Fire has finished fourth in the last two Vanderbilt editions. Lexitonian, sixth in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on Belmont Stakes Day last month, will look to bounce back for trainer Jack Sisterson.

A seven-furlong turf allowance for fillies and mares 3-and-up will get Woodbine in on the action in Race 9 at 5:17 p.m. Scatter the Clouds, trained by Michael Keogh, was a debut winner on June 27 at Woodbine and will look to go 2-for-2. Queen's Speed, conditioned by Robert Tiller, won back-to-back starts to close out her 2020 campaign and started her 4-year-old year with a runner-up effort on June 26 at Woodbine off the layoff.

Saratoga will close the sequence with the final two legs, as a talented six-horse field of accomplished sophomores will contest the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy going 1 1/8 miles in Race 9 at 5:39 p.m. The prep for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers on August 28 will see superstar Essential Quality make his first start since winning the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes last month. The reigning Champion 2-Year-Old has won six of his seven career starts, tallying three Grade 1 scores, and his only loss was a competitive fourth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs. Essential Quality, whose juvenile year helped earn Brad Cox the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Trainer in 2020, will go up against Weyburn, Dr Jack, Masqueparade, Keepmeinmind and Risk Taking.

The finale will be the Grade 2, $250,000 Bowling Green for 4-year-olds and up going 1 3/8 miles on the Saratoga inner turf in Race 10 at 6:13 p.m. Channel Cat, one of three sons of English Channel entered for Saturday's 63rd renewal, won the 2019 Bowling Green and will look to tally another one for conditioner Jack Sisterson. Bill Mott, who is tied with fellow Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher for most Bowling Green victories with four, will saddle a trio of contenders, including the reigning Champion Turf Male Channel Maker, graded-stakes winner Red Knight and multiple graded-stakes placed Moon Over Miami.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

The Cross Country Pick 5 will continue each Saturday throughout the year. For more information, visit NYRABets.com.
