Thursday’s Insights: Uncle Mo Filly’s Belmont At The Big A Debut

Blue Devil Racing Stable purchased DREAMING OF MO (Uncle Mo) at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale for $700,000. Two years prior, the bay filly's dam Dreaming of You (Pioneerof the Nile) was sold to Phoenix Thoroughbreds with the filly in utero at the Keeneland November Sale for $500,000.

Second dam General Jeanne (Honour and Glory) also produced MGSW Justwhistledixie (Dixie Union), who foaled GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile hero New Year's Day (Street Cry {Ire}) and three full-brothers by Tapit–MGSW Mohaymen, GSW Enforceable, and GSW Kingly.

In receipt of Lasix for this debut, Dreaming of Mo is trained by Carlos Martin and Joel Rosario has the call.

A $475,000 OBS April Sale graduate, You Only Live Once (More Than Ready) makes her first start for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher with Irad Ortiz aboard. Heading to Kentucky for some early evening racing for juvenile fillies, Austin Traffic (Cross Traffic) will attempt to graduate at first asking from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. The Mike Rutherford homebred is out of GSW Taittinger Rose (Menifee), who also is responsible for the chestnut filly's full-brother and Jimmy Winkfield S. winner Montauk Traffic and her half-sister SP Rosebug (American Pharoah).

Corkage Fee (Vino Rosso), bred and owned by Jim and Donna Daniell, goes out for trainer Michael McCarthy. The bay filly's unraced dam is out of GI Ballerina S. and GI Test S. heroine Turbulent Descent (Congrats). TJCIS PPS

With demand high, the Churchill secretary drew a second race for juvenile fillies and out of this bunch Dazzlin' Dictator (American Pharoah)'s dam is a half-sister to the dam of GISW She's A Julie (Elusive Quality), and GIII Sorrento S. victoress Untouched Talent (Storm Cat), who produced GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Bodemeister (Empire Maker) and MGSW Under the Stars (Pioneerof the Nile).

Also making the starting gate is Magic Gathering (Liam's Map), who counts MGSW Gotta Have Her (Royal Academy) as her second dam. Montclair Road (Quality Road) is out of Dothraki Queen (Pure Prize)–winner of the GIII Pocahontas S.–who was a $950,000 China Horse Club buy at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale back in 2016. TJCIS PPS

Katie Davis To Serve 7-Day Suspension At Start Of ’24 Spa Meet

Jockey Katie Davis will be suspended from riding the first seven days of the 2024 Saratoga Race Course season after she opted not to appeal a “careless riding” penalty handed down by the stewards. The ruling follows the disqualification of her mount on the final Saturday of this summer's meet.

According to the ruling dated Sept. 17, the infraction occurred in Saratoga's sixth race Sept. 2, a New York-bred maiden special weight over 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Davis was aboard the 52-1 first-timer Vin Santo (Vino Rosso), who got disqualified from fifth to tenth (last) for causing interference near the sixteenth pole.

The Equibase chart explained that Vin Santo “swung six wide into the stretch, was bumped by a rival outside the furlong marker, came in significantly under a right-handed crop nearing the sixteenth-pole, had the rider's right hand slip off the rein while trying to correct, slammed into a foe causing several horses to have trouble, was taken up while corrected and missed the superfecta.”

Davis rode in 86 races at Saratoga this year, compiling a 7-5-9 record with earnings of $544,078.

Vino Rosso’s Wine Me Up Gutsy on Del Mar Unveiling

3rd-Del Mar, $84,500, Msw, 9-2, 2yo, 6f, 1:11.43, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.
WINE ME UP (c, 2, Vino Rosso–Deanaallen'skitten {SW, $374,246}, by Kitten's Joy) found his feet after bobbling a touch at the jump and took no time getting to the front, speeding through :22.01, and :45.44 early splits as D'Oro Dash (Bolt d'Oro) hounded him from second as part of the lead trio. Vying with challengers through the turn, Wine Me Up had to dig, but found more in the stretch to kick away from his longtime shadow and score by 1 1/2 lengths.

Out of an accomplished racemare, the victor is the fifth to get his picture taken for the dam and has a yearling full-brother waiting in the wings. That sibling is thus far the last registered offspring as Deanallen'skitten did not catch in 2023. She visited Highly Motivated for 2024. Wine Me Up is Vino Rosso's ninth winner among multiple on the day. 'Insights' runner Arthur (Uncle Mo) finished eighth while $1.25m FTSAUG purchase Mc Vay (Constitution) placed one above him. The Wine Steward Stays Unbeaten With Funny Cide Win

Unbeaten and already a stakes winner in his first two starts, The Wine Steward kept his perfect record intact with a gutsy performance in Sunday's Funny Cide S. at Saratoga. Back facing New York-breds for the first time since his six-length debut win at Belmont May 28, the even-money favorite had to overcome a wide draw and a bumpy beginning. Caught outside throughout, he turned for home four abreast, set his sights on pacesetter El Grande O, and dug in to just get past that rival in the final jumps.

“He kind of bobbled out of there a little bit,” said winning jockey Manny Franco. “I wanted to be forward and I had to stalk four wide, but I knew I was on the best horse. If he's going to win, he's going to win from here. I didn't make things complicated, I just wanted to stay there and made my move when I thought it was the right time. I'm glad he got it done.”

A $340,000 OBS March 2-year-old, The Wine Steward is out of a half to a trio of good horses in GSW/GISP Giant Game (Giant's Causeway), MGSW/GISP Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}), and GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti).
