Keeneland November Sale Adds 25 Supplemental Entries

Keeneland has announced that 14 horses have been supplemented to Book 1 of the 78th November Breeding Stock Sale and 11 horses have been supplemented to the horses of racing age portion of the auction, to be held Nov. 10-19. Broodmares added to Book 1 include connections to two recent Grade 1-winning 2-year-olds expected to compete at the upcoming Breeders' Cup World Championships: Jazz Tune, dam of Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Rattle N Roll, and Look Me Over, a half-sister to American Pharoah winner Corniche.

Keeneland will accept supplements to Book 1 until the November Sale begins and continue to accept supplements to the horses of racing age portion through the first few days of the auction.

A total of 227 horses are cataloged to Book 1, which begins Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. ET. Supplements are:

– A Z Warrior, a Grade 1-winning daughter of Bernardini in foal to Uncle Mo. Dam of Irish stakes winner Key To My Heart, she is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Jojo Warrior, Grade 3 winner E Z Warrior and stakes winner J Z Warrior. Eaton Sales, agent, has consigned A Z Warrior.

– Dance Recital, a 4-year-old winning daughter of War Front out of Grade 2 winner Gold Medal Dancer, by Medaglia d'Oro. Dance Recital is consigned by Greenfield Farm, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect.

– Front Page Story, a full sister to English and Irish highweight Declaration of War and Grade 3 winner War Correspondent in foal to Constitution. The daughter of War Front is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

– Jazz Tune, dam of Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Rattle N Roll. Consigned by Baldwin Bloodstock, agent for St. Simon Place, the winning daughter of Johannesburg is in foal to Liam's Map.

– Lenni Girl, a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Jackie's Warrior. The daughter of Candy Ride is consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect.

– Look Me Over, a half-sister to G1 American Pharoah winner Corniche. The winning daughter of Hard Spun is carrying her first foal by Kitten's Joy. She is consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent.

– Miss Teheran, a Grade 3-placed winner consigned by ELiTE, agent. The daughter of Teofilo is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

– Not in Jest, a full sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Cross Traffic in foal to Into Mischief. Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Aaron and Marie Jones LLC, is consigning the daughter of Unbridled's Song.

– Quinta Nota, a Group 1 winner in Peru whose dam is a half-sister to Canadian champion Not Bourbon. The daughter of Tale of Ekati is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect.

– Reagan's Edge, a Grade 2-placed winner consigned by Denali Stud, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect. The 4-year-old filly is by Competitive Edge.

– Secret Garden, dam of G1 Darley Alcibiades third-place finisher Sequist who is in foal to Maclean's Music. From the family of champion and leading sire Bernardini, the daughter of the A.P. Indy stallion Flanders Fields is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

– Sircat Sally, a Grade 2-winning daughter of Surf Cat in foal to Munnings. She is consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.

– Team of Teams, a stakes-winning daughter of Elusive Quality in foal to American Pharoah. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, she is out of multiple Grade 2 winner Teammate, an A.P. Indy half-sister to War Front.

– Tetragonal, a Grade 2-placed winner consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The daughter of Mehmas is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

The horses of racing age section of the November Sale on Nov. 19 includes these supplements:

– Della Frost, a winning 3-year-old daughter of Frosted consigned by Four Star Sales, agent. She is a half-sister to stakes winner Pulsate, second in the recent G3 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational.

– Deregulation, a 3-year-old gelding by Acclamation (GB) consigned by ELiTE, agent.

– Digital Software, a 4-year-old winning gelding by Temple City consigned by ELiTE, agent.

– Investment Income, a 3-year-old filly by Candy Ride out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Zoftig, dam of Grade 1 winners Zo Impressive and Zaftig. She is consigned by ELiTE, agent.

– Kuora, a 5-year-old Group 3 winner consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent.

– Magical Sign, a 2-year-old daughter of Gun Runner from the family of Group 1 winners Macoumba and Septieme Ciel. She is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

– Manasota Sunset, a winning stakes-placed 2-year-old daughter of Outwork. She is consigned by St George Sales, agent.

– Penicillin Success, a winning 3-year-old colt by Vancouver consigned by Hidden Brook, agent

– Ski Patrol, a 3-year-old gelding by Pioneerof the Nile out of champion Forever Together. He is consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent.

– Vanzzy, a multiple stakes-winning 4-year-old colt by Verrazano out of stakes winner Selva, by Forest Wildcat. A five-time winner, he was third in the Sept. 27 Peach Street Stakes at Presque Isle Downs in his most recent start. He is consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.

– Winfromwithin, a 3-year-old stakes-winning, Grade 2-placed colt by Into Mischief consigned by ELiTE, agent. In March, Winfromwithin took the Columbia at Tampa Bay Downs in course-record time. He was third in the G2 American Turf Presented by Derby City Gaming at Churchill Downs in May.

Jersey Derby Winner Vanzzy Returns To Monmouth For Red Bank Stakes

After seeing Vanzzy run one of the better races of his career in winning last year's Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park, trainer Michael Pino is hoping to recapture some of that magic when he sends the colt out in Saturday's $150,000 Red Bank Stakes.

Now a 4-year-old, Vanzzy heads into the one-mile grass race that serves as the feature on Monmouth Park's 12-race card off two solid efforts to start his 2021 campaign.

“He was a little unlucky in his first start of the year (a third-place finish at Pimlico on July 11),” said Pino. “He threw a shoe in the paddock and got a little too keyed up. After he broke he wanted to run off with the rider and never settled at all.

“But he ran well all things considered and then came back and won his second time out (at Delaware Park on July 31) despite some trouble.”

Pino said the son of Verrazano “is a stronger horse this year.”

He will have to be Saturday, despite the short field. Among the six entered for the turf are the Mark Casse-trained Proven Strategies, who comes off a strong third-place finish in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup at Woodbine on July 18, and the Chad Brown-trained Value Proposition, listed as the 4-5 morning line favorite. Value Proposition ships in from New York for the race, with Paco Lopez listed to ride.

“Mark Casse's horse has speed but Vanzzy should be forwardly placed,” said Pino. “Obviously, Chad Brown's horse off the numbers looks like the horse to beat in the race. But you've got to run against that kind every now and then.

“Vanzzy is definitely a more mature horse this year and a stronger horse. I know we're going to see some strong races out of him. I'm planning and hoping that happens.”

Vanzzy, owned by Smart Angle LLP, has generally held his own through his 14-race career, with five wins, a second and a third and career earnings of $280,364. He shows two wins and two thirds in seven turf tries, the most notable being at a mile and a sixteenth in the 2020 Jersey Derby last year.

Pino has also entered Bird King in the race, with the 4-year-old gelding looking to make his turf debut after 16 dirt races.

Vanzzy Tops Saranac Field

Three-time stakes winner Vanzzy (Verrazano) looks to take his game to the next level Saturday in Saratoga’s GIII Saranac S. Capturing the Display S. last term, the bay won this year’s Rushaway S. in March on the Turfway synthetic and was fourth next out when trying grass for the first time in Belmont’s GII Pennine Ridge S. June 20. Third in the GIII Kent S. on the Delaware lawn July 4, he scored a decisive victory in the Jersey Derby last time at Monmouth July 26.

“His last race was his best, and he’s just getting better,” trainer Michael Pino said. “I think he fits, his last race was good he tucked in saved some ground and pushed away that’s a better trip. It looked like he had a good finish. Where he sits early on depends on how the race goes. He can do either, but I would rather sit a little off it.”

Chad Brown can never be overlooked in a grass stakes and he sends out French import L’Imperator (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). The bay won three of his four starts overseas for his previous connections and was privately purchased by Madaket Stables, Robert LaPenta and Wonder Stables and sent to Brown. L’Imperator receives Lasix for the first time in this event.

Don Juan Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) seeks his first black-type victory Saturday. Missing by a neck in a June 7 allowance at Belmont, the gray scored a decisive win in a one-mile test at the Spa July 25.

Vanzzy Rises To The Occasion In Jersey Derby

Trainer Michael Pino was pretty sure he had a stakes-caliber grass horse in Vanzzy. Now he's certain of it.

Sitting an ideal trip behind dueling leaders, Vanzzy shot through an opening along the rail coming out of the final turn and powered his way to a 3½-length victory in Sunday's $100,000 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

After a fourth-place finish and then a third in graded stakes races this year in his first two grass tries, the 3-year-old son of Verrazano–Selva by Forest Wildcat had his turf breakthrough in the 77^th edition of the Jersey Derby.

Paco Lopez, Monmouth Park's runaway riding leader, rode the winner, who paid $7.20 in the field of seven. Time for the mile and a sixteenth over a turf course listed as firm was 1:42.30.

“A perfect trip. A great ride by Paco (Lopez),” said Pino. “This horse needs that kind of trip. He's a little antsy early. I was real happy with the ride, real happy with the trip and he punched away like he's getting better. This was his best race yet.

“You can see he is getting better with each race, especially when we can get him to settle like we did.”

Lopez, who said he had the option of taking the lead or settling in with the versatile Vanzzy opted for the latter. He was on the rail, alternating between third and fourth as longshots Island Commish and Bye Bye Melvin dueled through a half in :49.41 and reached the mile together in 1:36.46.

With three horses fanned across the track coming out of the final turn, Lopez found an opening along the rail and Vanzzy exploded through it. Bye Bye Melvin held for second, three-quarters of a length behind the late-running Iris Mias.

“I think you can say that was a perfect trip for this horse,” Lopez said. “Mike left it up to me, but he said this horse can be on the lead if you need him to be. The turf course isn't really fast. It's a little soft. I was just so comfortable with him being on the rail and following horses. I just had to wait for the chance to move.

“You have to make a split-second decision coming out of the turn. Sometimes the rail is open, sometimes it's not. This time it was open for me so I took it. He really responded when he got through and was able to run.”

Owned by Daniel M. Ryan, Vanzzy posted his fourth victory in nine career starts, boosting his lifetime earnings to $232,726.

Pino said the Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs was the next possible destination for Vanzzy.

“We'll play it by ear,” Pino said. “He has become a real solid horse.”

Racing resumes at Monmouth Park with a six-race twilight card on Friday night. First race post time is 5 p.m.
