Average Daily Handle Jumps Nearly 10 Percent At Belmont Spring/Summer Meet

The recently concluded Belmont Park spring/summer meet generated $14,746,421 in average daily handle, a 9.7 percent increase over 2022 the New York Racing Association, Inc. announced Friday.

Originally scheduled for 40 days of live racing, NYRA was forced to cancel two cards due to poor air quality caused by wildfires in Canada. All-sources handle for the 38-day spring/summer meet totaled $560,363,986, which compares to $591,250,409 in 2022 when the meet was contested over 44 days.

The blockbuster June 10 Belmont Stakes Day card, highlighted by Arcangelo's (Arrogate) victory in the 155th running of the GI Belmont S., generated all-sources handle of $118,283,455, a NYRA record for a non-Triple Crown year.

Average field size for the 368 races run during the 2023 spring/summer meet was 7.60, a 3.4 percent increase over 2022 when average field size was 7.35. Of the 368 races held during the spring/summer meet, 187 were on the main track and 181 on the turf while 14 races were forced off the turf due to rain.

Bob Baffert Suspension Extended Through 2024 At Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs Incorporated is extending the suspension of Bob Baffert through calendar year 2024 based on what Churchill Downs called “continued concerns regarding the threat to the safety and integrity of racing he poses to CDI-owned racetracks.” Churchill released the following statement:

“Mr. Baffert continues to peddle a false narrative concerning the failed drug test of Medina Spirit at the 147th Kentucky Derby from which his horse was disqualified by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in accordance with Kentucky law and regulations. Prior to that race, Mr. Baffert signed an agreement with Churchill Downs which stated that he was responsible for understanding the rules of racing in Kentucky and that he would abide by them. The results of the tests clearly show that he did not comply, and his ongoing conduct reveals his continued disregard for the rules and regulations that ensure horse and jockey safety, as well as the integrity and fairness of the races conducted at our facilities. A trainer who is unwilling to accept responsibility for multiple drug test failures in our highest-profile races cannot be trusted to avoid future misconduct. Mr. Baffert will remain suspended from entering horses at all racetracks owned by CDI through 2024. After such time, we will re-evaluate his status.”

Baffert told the TDN, “I am at a loss to understand Churchill Downs's latest action to suspend me. From the moment I learned of Medina Spirit's post-race positive–now more than two years ago–I committed to find out how it could have occurred, given that we had never injected Medina Spirit's joints with betamethasone, which the veterinary records confirm. A review of our treatment records showed we used a topical ointment called Otomax for a skin infection, and post-race testing of the sample confirmed the positive test came from a topical application.

I have been open, honest and forthcoming about these events. I have acknowledged that our treatment led to the positive and I informed the Kentucky Racing Commission that we had treated Medina Spirit this way.

I have been advised by my attorneys that the use of Otomax is permitted under the rules, and this issue is presently being adjudicated by the Racing Commission in a case presently before them.  In no way does this involve a “disregard for the rules”.

In the interests of the sport we all love, I have made no public comments on this unfortunate episode for an extended period of time so the suggestion that I `continue to peddle a false narrative' is patently false..”

Clark Brewster, who represented Bob Baffert in the Medina Spirit case, added: “This has nothing to do with anything that Bob has done or said. Bob simply has come forward and said he used this particular topical and that the rules permitted it. He felt that the rules dealing with betamethasone involved with injecting a horse within 14 days of the race. He's been open and transparent and hasn't been in any way accusatory. The words in this release are shocking and don't deal with the reality in any way.”

Kentucky Derby Museum Completes Derby 149 Updates To Winner’s Circle Exhibit

Guests can relive the magical moment Mage crossed the finish line to become the 149th Kentucky Derby champion at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

The Museum completed updates to the Winner's Circle exhibit, which greets visitors as soon as they walk in. A local artist, Mike Prather, airbrushed the replica horse to look exactly like Mage, including his distinct markings and equine nasal strips. The replica jockey is wearing the team's silks and pants, just like what Javier Castellano wore while aboard Mage on May 6, 2023.

After taking pictures with Mage and Castellano, guests can learn about the team's story and their journey to the Kentucky Derby stage through the self-guided panels in the exhibit. The Museum is also excited to have unique artifacts on display:

  • Two of Mage's horseshoes worn during the Kentucky Derby
  • A harness worn by Mage
  • A Mage hat signed by the team

The Museum's signature 18-minute movie, The Greatest Race, now includes Mage's stunning late charge to win Derby 149. With odds at 15 – 1, Mage lived up to his name, which means “magician” or “wizard.” Guests can experience the thrilling win on the larger-than-life 360° screen by booking their next visit to the Museum online.

Letter to the Editor: Fred Pope

There are a lot of opinions about the Triple Crown. Most of them center on the Preakness and the spacing of the three races. In my opinion, the Preakness is the victim of the Kentucky Derby's success, or as T.D. Thornton said so well in his article June 12:

“Underscoring how the Derby itself is devolving into a be-all/end-all, one-shot endeavor at the expense of the Triple Crown race that follows it, for the first time in 75 years, Mage was the only horse out of the Derby to enter the Preakness.”

The Preakness is a very popular event in Baltimore, it just isn't popular on national television because it hasn't been a good, competitive, highest-level race. Here's why that needs to change and how it can be improved for next year.

The 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby offers bettors and fans Roman chariot race excitement. The horses get banged-up cut-up, and many put on the shelf for a while. Any extra betting handle coming from the cavalry charge of 20 horses to the first turn is not worth the risk to riders, horses and the sport, especially right now. Many in the industry hold their breath for two minutes.

For safety reasons, Churchill Downs (CD) needs to limit the Derby to a maximum 14 starters, like the Breeders' Cup. If they do that, good things will happen. The immediate result is CD is seen as making a positive safety move, but the magic for the Preakness, is that potentially six horses move to the second Classic with fresh horses and perhaps a full field for bettors and fans. NBC gets to promote a much better product and the Triple Crown improves.

CD may not like it, but the rest of the industry should. If CD does not make this change on its own, then there are two strategies to make it happen. First, the TOBA Graded Stakes Committee rules the maximum starters in a Grade 1 race is 14, same as the Breeders' Cup, which is a very common sense move. Second, HISA rules the same for safety reasons.

This idea is one way the industry can help the Preakness, the Triple Crown and the sport without controversy. But it's an incremental strategy that does not get to the core reason we have the Triple Crown.

Around the Thoroughbred world, breeders and owners each year seek to “prove the breed” through a series of 3-year-old Classic races for colts and fillies. All the other racing countries start in a common sense way with a shorter race first, usually at one mile, then move to 1 1/2 miles, then the final leg is somewhere longer. Not us. We start at 1 1/4 miles, then backslide to 1 3/16, then jump to 1 1/2 miles. It doesn't make sense, thus it doesn't work in an increasingly competitive sports world.

1/ST Racing, owners of the Preakness S., should do something in their own best interest to improve the Triple Crown. They should move the shorter distance Preakness to become the first Classic, perhaps two to three weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby, which is locked into the first Saturday in May. They do not need Churchill Downs permission.

1/ST Racing also owns two of the major Classic prep races, the Florida Derby and the Santa Anita Derby, both at 1 1/8 miles, which they can adjust dates and leverage toward the Preakness. What about all the other Classic prep races? They will need to adjust, which they have done from time to time. Remember, the objective is three Classic races to “prove the breed.”

With the shorter Preakness moved out of the way, the Derby horses would then have five weeks to rest up and prepare for the Belmont, which is what many trainers are doing now by skipping the Preakness. This extra time for all horses will make the Belmont a much better competition.

Moving the date of the Preakness would require the Maryland Racing Commission, City of Baltimore and 1/ST Racing to continue to collaborate on how to make Maryland racing a more successful venture with a future. To that end, the uncertainty of Pimlico and Laurel should lead to some bold thinking about how Baltimore can have a true racing success story. It's going to cost a lot of money to find any facility solution, even a bad one, why not go big on a proven racing model?

Baltimore Harbor has been the focus of major urban renewal to bring tourism downtown. It's been a struggle to find a dynamic focal point. There is great opportunity to bring Baltimore harbor a Hong Kong-style, urban race track. A sports and residential complex on the harbor, right downtown. It can be a multi-purpose facility without training stalls, where horses are shipped in on race days/nights from the training centers at Laurel and Fair Hill. Happy Valley is a multi-purpose sports complex on less than 100 acres in Hong Kong. This could be the most stunning racing facility in America, a true tourism draw for Baltimore.

It's a lot easier to address the minor problems of three races in the Triple Crown than it is to tackle the structural problems of the sport in America. TDN does a good job of allowing readers to offer ideas, maybe some of them will click.
