Blue-Blooded Juveniles Debut on Travers Card

1st-SAR, $105K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, 11:35 a.m. EDT
The star-studded GI Runhappy Travers S. day card kicks off with a pair of juveniles events, starting with this main track sprint. VERIFYING (Justify), a $775,000 KEESEP acquisition by the Coolmore contingent, is one of the most intriguing firsters in this event. The Brad Cox pupil is out of GSW Diva Delite (Repent), who summoned $1.2 million with this colt in utero at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. That makes Verifying a half-sibling to champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute), who brought $5-million at the 2020 FTKNOV sale. Steve Asmussen unveils Courtlandt Farms' King's Glory (Speightstown), a $575,000 KEESEP buy. Out of MSP Jax El (Unusual Heat), the chestnut is a half to GSW & GISP Dr. Dorr (Lookin At Lucky). Mike Rutherford's $400,000 KEESEP purchase Game Warden (Tapit) also debuts in this spot for Bill Mott. The bay is out of a daughter of SW Dance Quietly (A.P. Indy), who is a half to Horse of the Year Saint Liam (Saint Ballado), GISW Funtastic (More Than Ready) and GSW Quiet Giant (Giant's Causeway), who is the dam of Horse of the Year and top young sire Gun Runner. Turf-routing juveniles get their chance next with a trio of interesting first timers. Wertheimer and Frere homebred TRIPLE START (American Pharoah) looks to get off the mark for Todd Pletcher here. The chestnut is a half to GI Personal Ensign S. winner Persistently (Smoke Glacken) and a full to SP Award It. Her second dam is champion Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold), dam of MGISW Good Reward (Storm Cat) and GSW sire Pure Prize (Storm Cat). This is also the family of Grade I winners Instilled Regard (Arch), Queen Goddess (Empire Maker) and Dancing Forever (Rahy). Chad Brown unveils one from a family he's pretty familiar with in Take Me to Jimmy (Kitten's Joy). The $335,000 FTSAUG buy is a half to Brown-trained MGSWs Tammy The Torpedo (More Than Ready) and Seek And Destroy (Verrazano). His dam is a half to MGSW Criminologist (Maria's Mon). Highland Lord (Lord Nelson) makes his first trip to the post for Barclay Tagg. The Young homebred is a half to MSW & GISP Highland Sky (Sky Mesa) and SW & GSP Highland Glory (Sky Mesa), both trained by Tagg. He also hails from the family of GISW Bit of Whimsy (Distorted Humor). NYRA To Host Cross Country Pick 5 With Woodbine On Travers Day At Saratoga

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 with graded stakes action from historic Saratoga Race Course as well as three races from Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday, Runhappy Travers Day.

Live coverage of all the sequence's races will be available with Saratoga Live on FOX Sports and MSG Networks. Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Woodbine will start the sequence in Race 8 with a full field of fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going six furlongs on the main track in Race 8 at 4:49 p.m. Eastern. Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse will see Roman d'Oro, who ran fifth in the Grade 3 Mazarine in October at the Rexdale, Ontario-based track, break from post 2. Trainer Kevin Attard will send out Princess Fabiana from the inside post.

The stakes action will start at the Spa when six fillies and mares compete in the Grade 3, $150,000 Waya for older fillies and mares going 1 ½ miles on the inner turf in Race 9 at 5:02 p.m. Fools Gold will look to defend her title in the turf marathon and become the first repeat Waya winner since Source in 1993-94. The Chad Brown trainee will have the services of Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano from the outside post. Her stablemate, the French-bred My Sister Nat, earned North American graded stakes black type in her last two efforts when finishing a close second in the Grade 3 Long Island on November 30 at Aqueduct and the Grade 2 New York in June at Belmont Park.

Action returns to Woodbine in Race 9 at 5:22 p.m. when 10 3-year-olds and up compete in a 7 ½-furlong inner turf challenge. Federal Law, who won the Queenston last year at Woodbine, will be sent out by Casse. Florida Won, condition by Martin Drexler, has ran second in two of his last three starts.

Race 10 at Woodbine, a 5 ½-furlong maiden sprint set to go off at 5:56 p.m., will see Marjorie's Dream, who ran a competitive second last out on July 12 going 6 ½ furlongs at Woodbine, break from post 3 for trainer Randy Thompson. The 12-full horse field also includes Trading Bay, who was third in his debut on November 16 at Woodbine.

The concluding leg will be the 151st running of the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers for some of the country's top 3-year-olds at the Spa in Race 11 at 6:15 p.m. on FOX.

A talented eight-horse field is highlighted by morning-line even-money favorite Tiz the Law, the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes-winner for trainer Barclay Tagg and to be ridden by Manny Franco. Tiz the Law, who drew post 6, is the leader on the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard and will look to add more points as the Travers will award 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top-four finishers. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will send Uncle Chuck, 2-for-2 in his career, into the Travers, breaking from post 3 with Luis Saez aboard. Max Player, the third-place finisher in the Belmont Stakes conditioned by Linda Rice, drew post 4. Others in the field for the 1 1/4-mile Runhappy Travers include Country Grammer, Shivaree, South Bend, Caracaro and First Line.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Hot-Handed Clement Sends Pure Sensation, Shekky Shebaz Into Troy

Christophe Clement, who topped the trainer standings with 15 wins heading into Wednesday's card at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will look to add to his impressive numbers when he sends out Pure Sensation and Shekky Shebaz in Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Troy over the Spa's Mellon turf course.

The Troy, a 5 ½-furlong turf sprint for older males, is one of five graded races on a loaded Runhappy Travers Day card headlined by the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers at 1 1/4 miles for the country's most talented 3-year-olds. The card is bolstered by the Grade 1, $300,000 Longines Test for sophomore fillies; the Grade 1, $300,000 Ballerina presented by NYRA Bets for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going seven furlongs and offering a “Win and You're In” berth to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint; and the Grade 3, $150,000 Waya, a 1 ½-mile turf route for older fillies and mares. The card will be broadcast on Saratoga Live on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.

Patricia Generazio's homebred Pure Sensation, a 9-year-old Zensational gelding, boasts a record of 37-14-5-7 with purse earnings of $2,001,050. The popular grey won 4-of-6 starts last season, including a pair of graded-stakes at Parx where he captured his third Grade 3 Parx Dash [which he also won in 2016-17], and his fourth Grade 3 Turf Monster [2015, 2017-18] at Parx.

Pure Sensation wintered at Payson Park in Florida and made his seasonal debut with a seventh in the Grade 1 Jaipur on June 20 at Belmont Park. He posted a pair of turf works following the Jaipur, including a bullet three-eighths in 37.23 seconds on July 31 on the Oklahoma training turf.

“I was very disappointed with his race in the Jaipur. He was in a speed duel that day and I hope it's the reason that he ran poorly,” said Clement. “He came back and had a very good work on the turf the other day here. He worked well and looks well.”

Pure Sensation will be making his third start in the Troy after finishing sixth in 2018 and third last year. Clement said he's hoping the ultra-consistent Pure Sensation will return to form on Saturday.

“He's 9 years old, so we'll go one race at a time with him,” said Clement. “It's an important race for him as he has to do well in order for me to carry on. He's a very good-looking horse. He still looks very well and he's very sound.”

Kendrick Carmouche, who had guided the gelding to seven wins, has the call from post 5.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Bethlehem Stables' Shekky Shebaz owns a record of 21-6-5-4 with purse earnings of $382,400 and will look to make the grade in his fourth start of the season.

The 5-year-old Cape Blanco gelding finished third in the 2019 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in his graded-stakes debut. Last out, making his first start for Clement, Shekky Shebaz closed to finish third in the 5 ½-furlong Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park.

Shekky Shebaz posted a bullet three-eighths breeze in 36.98 Sunday on the Oklahoma turf training course.

“He's had one start with us and ran fair at Monmouth,” said Clement. “He ran wide all the way. He also looks good and trained well on the grass here. Irad knows him well, so we'll give him a shot.”

Shekky Shebaz will exit post 4 under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Breeze Easy's Imprimis, a seven-time winner from 13 starts for trainer Joe Orseno, is winless in four starts since taking the 2019 Grade 2 Shakertown in April at Keeneland.

The 6-year-old Broken Vow gelding shipped to Ascot last June for the Group 1 King's Stand and finished sixth. He returned stateside for a three-race fall campaign that included a fourth in the Grade 3 Runhappy Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs; a third in the Grade 2 Woodford at Keeneland and a sixth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

Jose Ortiz, who guided Imprimis to victory in the 2018 Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park, will pilot Imprimis from the inside post.

Rounding out the field is American Sailor [post 2, Tyler Gaffalione], Lonhtwist [post 3, John Velazquez], Pulsate [post 6, Manny Franco], and Chewing Gum [post 7, Joel Rosario].

The Troy is slated as Race 8 on Saturday's 12-race card, which offers a first post of 12 p.m. Eastern. Saratoga Live will present daily television coverage of the 40-day summer meet on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.
