Jockey Perry Ouzts Moves Into Fifth All-Time

Perry Ouzts, 69, passed jockey Dave Gall with win number 7,397 after the seventh race at Belterra Park on Tuesday to become racing's fifth all-time leading rider, John Engelhardt reported.

The win was especially rewarding since his mount was trained by his close friend and the track's leading trainer, Larry Smith.

“To have him set that milestone on one of my runners just makes it all that much better,” said Smith.

After the veteran jockey left the winner's circle, he went to the jockeys quarters to change his silks for the next race.

Fasig-Tipton California Yearling Catalogue Now Available

A total of 283 horses have been catalogued for the upcoming Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearling Sale. The auction will be held Sept. 26 in Pomona, with bidding slated to begin at 11 a.m. PT.

“This sale is the focal point for all those wanting to participate in the lucrative California-bred program, and this year's catalogue is strong in both quantity and quality,” said Fasig-Tipton California representative Mike Machowsky. “While this sale primarily showcases the best of the California breeding program, there are several leading national sires represented, as well.”

A pair of graduates of the California sale were recent stakes winners at Del Mar, with the 2-year-old filly Pushiness (Kantharos) winning the CTBA S. and 3-year-old Bus Buzz (Stay Thirsty) winning the Real Good Deal S.

Fasig-Tipton will also offer a supplemental catalogue of horses of racing age to be sold immediately following the conclusion of the yearling catalogue. The company will accept horses of racing age nominations through early September.

“This was a popular addition to the yearling sale last year,” Machowsky said of the auction's racing age section. “Two of the horses offered in last year's horses of racing age supplement went on to be stakes winners subsequently.”

The California Fall catalogue can be viewed here.

‘Transferred as Retired’ Goes Digital

The Jockey Club's 'Transferred as Retired from Racing' process can now be completed digitally through the Interactive Registration (IR) website at registry.jockeyclub.com.

Previously, the retired from racing process required notarized signatures on a hardcopy form. With the assistance of digital signature verification, The Jockey Club will be able to collect the signatures required to complete the retired from racing process through IR.

“Being able to ensure a horse can still be used for breeding, but cannot race is important for many owners, and we wanted to make the retired from racing process as easy as possible, yet still ensure the integrity of the process,” said Rick Bailey, registrar of The Jockey Club.

To date, more than 5,400 Thoroughbreds have been recorded as retired from racing. A list of these horses can be viewed through IR.
