The Wine Steward Stays Unbeaten With Funny Cide Win

Unbeaten and already a stakes winner in his first two starts, The Wine Steward kept his perfect record intact with a gutsy performance in Sunday's Funny Cide S. at Saratoga. Back facing New York-breds for the first time since his six-length debut win at Belmont May 28, the even-money favorite had to overcome a wide draw and a bumpy beginning. Caught outside throughout, he turned for home four abreast, set his sights on pacesetter El Grande O, and dug in to just get past that rival in the final jumps.

“He kind of bobbled out of there a little bit,” said winning jockey Manny Franco. “I wanted to be forward and I had to stalk four wide, but I knew I was on the best horse. If he's going to win, he's going to win from here. I didn't make things complicated, I just wanted to stay there and made my move when I thought it was the right time. I'm glad he got it done.”

A $340,000 OBS March 2-year-old, The Wine Steward is out of a half to a trio of good horses in GSW/GISP Giant Game (Giant's Causeway), MGSW/GISP Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}), and GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti). His dam, purchased for $350,000 by Coteau Grove Farms at last year's Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, has a yearling colt by Authentic and a weanling Curlin filly. She was bred back to Justify for 2024. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

Soloshot An Impressive Saratoga Winner For Freshman Stallion Solomini

1st-Saratoga, $88,000, (S), Msw, 8-27, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f (off turf), 1:05.71, ft, 7 3/4 lengths.
SOLOSHOT (f, 2, Solomini–Sweet Queen {MSP}, by Twirling Candy) breezed in :10.1 and brought a final bid of $290,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale. A main-track only entry who drew in as the race came off the turf, the 5-2 favorite led every step of the running, showing the way through early fractions of :22.95 and :46.64. Set down at the top of the stretch, she extended her margin at will and won easily by 7 3/4 lengths over fellow MTO entry Fast and Frisky (Solomini) to top an exacta for her freshman sire. Solomini's (by Curlin) third winner, Soloshot was produced by the first of four consecutive visits to the New York-based stallion. She has a yearling full-sister still to race while her dam returned to Solomini again for 2024.  Sales History: $30,000 Wlg '21 FTNMIX; $290,000 2yo '23 EASMAY. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $48,400. After Meetings With Horsemen, Jockeys, and Vets, Saratoga to Continue With Racing Sunday

After the on-track deaths of two racehorses on its Saturday card prompted a series of meetings with interested parties, the racing card will continue as scheduled Sunday at Saratoga as planned, according to a release from NYRA's Vice President of Communications, Patrick McKenna.

“Sunday's live racing program will proceed as scheduled following a series of productive meetings held with horsemen, jockeys, and veterinarians last night and throughout the morning,” read an emailed statement. “Based on these conversations and ensuing dialogue, NYRA is confident in the safety and overall consistency of the racing surfaces.”

On Saturday's Travers Day card, Nobel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) broke down in the fifth race while galloping out on the turf, and New York Thunder (Nyquist) broke down when on his way to an apparent victory in the GI Allen Jerkens Memorial S. on the dirt.

Anarchist Punches Breeders’ Cup Ticket Via Del Mar’s Pat O’Brien

Seven times second in his 11 previous trips to the post and still eligible for a second-level allowance, Anarchist (Distorted Humor) earned an all-expenses-paid berth into the field for this year's GI BigAss Fans Dirt Mile with a hard-fought success in Saturday's GII Pat O'Brien S. at Del Mar.

Beaten for speed from his high draw, Anarchist settled about four paths off the rail and in centerfield as Brickyard Ride (Clubhouse Ride) and Vivir Con Alegria (Chi) (Flyer {Chi}) matched motors through a sizzling opening quarter that was posted in :21.49. The well-backed Spirit of Makena (Ghostzapper) came after Brickyard Ride with a two-wide run around the turn, but Anarchist had the move covered and moved simultaneously three deep before poking his head in front nearing the stretch. Shoved over onto his correct lead by Ramon Vazquez at the eighth pole, Anarchist opened a clear advantage and held sway late as Bye Bye Bobby (Quality Road) flashed home from a distant last. C Z Rocket (City Zip) was third.

Anarchist joined the Doug O'Neill barn this past winter, having broken his maiden at Ellis Park for Chris Davis last summer, and was second in his first four outings for the barn, including the GIII San Simeon S. sprinting down the hill Mar. 5 and the Apr. 22 GIII Kona Gold S. on the main track. A 3/4-length winner of the GIII Jacques Cartier S. at Woodbine May 13, the bay was runner-up to champion Elite Power (Curlin) in the GII True North S. at Belmont June 10 and again in this track's GI Bing Crosby S. July 29.

Pedigree Notes:

Anarchist is one of five winners from six to race out of a multiple stakes-placed daughter of Win With a Wink, a stakes winner in New York-bred restricted company. Vicarious Won was sold for $20,000 in foal to Runhappy at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale, and the resulting produce–a filly named Won Happy Mama–broke her maiden at first asking by 5 1/2 lengths in an Iowa-bred maiden at Prairie Meadows July 31. Vicarious Won has a yearling filly by Kantharos and was bred to Blame this season.
