Not This Time Filly Sets Furlong Mark at OBS

A filly by Not This Time worked the fastest furlong of the week during Thursday’s fourth session of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s July 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale. Consigned by de Meric Sales, the chestnut (hip 640) covered the distance in :9 4/5. She is out of Exotic Design (A.P. Indy), a daughter of multiple Grade I winner Exotic Wood (Rahy) and a full-sister to stakes winner Key to Power. Silvestre Avila purchased the youngster for $19,000 at last year’s OBS October Yearling Sale.

“I thought she would be able to work in :10 flat or :10 1/5,” Avila, who is partners with his brother-in-law Chalino Lopez on the filly, said. “She had been training very well and she prepped over there very, very well. So I thought she could do :10 flat, but this :9 4/5 is better for me.”

Of the filly’s appeal last fall, Avila said, “I liked the filly when I saw her in the barn. She’s a nice-looking filly with beautiful lines. And I like to buy the new sires.”

Avila agreed he had picked the right new sire last season, with the red-hot Not This Time already represented by three winners on the racetrack and a million-dollar juvenile in the sales ring.

“Exactly. I got lucky,” he said with a laugh.

Avila and Lopez enjoyed a major pinhooking score with another first-crop sire at last year’s OBS March sale, selling a filly by Daredevil purchased for $5,000 at OBS October for $155,000.

Avila has been working for the de Merics for the past eight years and Tristan de Meric called him a “vital member of our team.”

After last year’s success at the March sale, Valery de Meric said of Avila, “He does everything for us. He lives on the farm, he breezes and preps all the 2-year-olds, he night watches for us, he even watches the kids for us sometimes.”

The Not This Time filly is the only yearling Avila purchased last year.

“When I bought that one last year, I tried on a few others, but didn’t get them,” Avila said. “I like to buy one or two a year. She’s the only one this year, but hopefully she’s the right one.”

A colt by Ghostzapper (hip 639) turned in Thursday’s fastest quarter-mile work of :21 1/5. He is out of Excellent News (Rahy), a half-sister to graded stakes winner Here’s to You (Bertrando). The bay is consigned by Randy Bradshaw who purchased the youngster for $250,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale.

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 7:30 a.m. The July sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing each day at 10 a.m.

Munnings Filly Earns Rising Star Tag at Belmont

ALDA (Munnings) became the newest ‘TDN Rising Star’ Thursday with a decisive score at Belmont Park. Rallying to be third on debut in a five-panel event at this oval June 12, she was hammered down to even-money to improve over an extra furlong here. Saving ground in a joint third, the homebred was several lengths off the dueling leaders through a sharp first quarter in :21.89. Closing the gap entering the backstretch, the homebred split horses with a three-wide move turning for home and overtook Illegal Smile (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) in the lane, rolling clear to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

“Johnny [Velazquez] said she was much more professional today,” trainer Graham Motion said in a post-race interview with NYRA’s Maggie Wolfendale. “Last time, she just broke a tad slow which cost her and he kind of had to rush her a little bit. Today, she broke much better. Actually, Johnny said she was pretty sharp the first part, but he could do whatever he wanted, which really helped. She was pretty professional, I thought.”

He continued, “My theory with the 2-year-olds is if they take you to the races, just go with it, and she’s done everything right. She’s such a pro in the mornings, she makes me look good, I think.”

The winner is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Alignement (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Her dam Soldata, a half-sister to MGSW sire Exhi (Maria’s Mon), produced an Into Mischief colt named Serifos in 2019 and a Tapit colt in 2020.

NYRA to Highlight Non-Profit Organizations at Saratoga

The New York Racing Association, Inc. will celebrate the work of non-profit organizations by taking its Community Outreach Booth program online during the 2020 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, which begins Thursday, July 16 and runs through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

The Virtual Community Outreach Booth program will highlight a total of 40 non-profits throughout the season by sharing information about their work and fundraising initiatives at NYRA.com/community.

“As we look ahead to a unique racing season, it is important to NYRA that we continue to highlight the work of non-profit organizations both in our industry and the Saratoga community,” said NYRA President & CEO Dave O’Rourke. “We encourage fans to visit our website throughout the season to learn more about the impact that these organizations have on our community.”

The digital edition of the program will serve as a temporary replacement to the Community Outreach Booth’s traditional on-track location, which sits prominently alongside the Jockey Silks Room near the Union Avenue main entrance and is a mainstay of the summer meet.

Under current New York State guidelines, Saratoga Race Course will open without spectators in attendance.

Flameaway to Shuttle to Chile’s Haras Dadinco

Flameaway (Scat Daddy) will shuttle to South America to stand at Haras Dadinco in Chile for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season. The deal was brokered by Matt Bowling Bloodstock and Sullivan Bloodstock.

The two-time graded winner and GII Toyota Blue Grass S. and GII Jim Dandy S. runner-up stands at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky.

“We are thrilled to partner with Haras Dadinco,” said Ryan Norton, stallion director at Darby Dan Farm. “Flameaway was a versatile racehorse and he has a stallion’s pedigree. He generated a lot of interest in this, his first season at stud, and we believe it’s an exciting situation for our young stallion, as well as for Southern Hemisphere breeders.”

Flameaway bred 183 mares in his first Northern Hemisphere season.
