Distorted Humor Colt Runs Away to ‘Rising Star’ Performance at the Spa

Momos (c, 2, Distorted Humor-Inspeight of Us, by Speightstown) kicked off Saturday’s card at the Spa with a ‘TDN Rising Star’ performance.

The :21 breezer at OBS March brought $180,000 from Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC and Secure Investments and was off at odds of 6-1 in this unveiling for Christophe Clement.

He sped through an opening quarter in :22.20 from his inside draw, was under cruise control as they hit the quarter pole and took off in the stretch to run his five rivals off their feet.

It was 6 1/2 lengths back to favored $500,000 OBS March graduate Mo Mischief (Into Mischief) in second. The final time for 5 1/2 furlongs was 1:04.50.

Momos was produced by a half-sister to GISWs Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy) and Mongolian Saturday (Any Given Saturday). The winner’s dam, Inspeight of Us, is also represented by an Empire Maker filly of 2019 and she was most recently bred to Audible.

Inspeight of Us, a maiden of two career starts, was purchased by Tami Bobo’s Secure Investments for $115,000 as a KEESEP yearling.

Tiz the Law Turns in First Spa Breeze

Leading sophomore Tiz the Law (Constitution) turned in his first published breeze since shipping to Saratoga Saturday morning as he eyes the Spa’s GI Runhappy Travers S. Aug. 8. Working solo around 8:45 a.m. under exercise rider Heather Smullen, the GI Belmont S. hero was clocked in :59.63 with internal splits of :24.40 and :35.60 and a six-furlong gallop-out in 1:12.84. “I thought the work was good,” said trainer Barclay Tagg. “He did it just right. The time was good. Everything was good.”

Tiz the Law will breeze twice more before the Travers.

“He came out nice and strong,” said owner Sackatoga Stables operations manager Jack Knowlton. “Obviously the new racetrack was no impediment for him, so it’s just one more step. We’ve got three weeks from today. He’ll have two more works and then we’re ready to go. You can see how fit he is.”

A debut winner against New York-breds at Saratoga last Aug. 8, Tiz the Law took the GI Champagne S. in October downstate. After a third-place run with trouble in the GIII Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill in November, he’s a perfect three-for-three this year, with scores in the GIII Holy Bull S. and GI Curlin Florida Derby before turning to Big Sandy to take the repositioned Belmont by 3 3/4 lengths.

Limited Haskell Tickets Remain Available

A limited amount of picnic area general admission tickets and special packages for the Blu Grotto restaurant for Saturday’s TVG.com Haskell S. program remain available on a first-come, first-served basis both at Monmouth Park and online at www.monmouthpark.com. The tickets were among those released for sale this past Wednesday.

Picnic area general admission tickets are $100, which include admission, a Haskell hat, a program and parking. The Blu Grotto is offering a $150 package that includes admission and four-hour bar service.

Racing at Lone Star to Resume July 19

Racing at Lone Star Park, which was suspended July 5 after an employee in racing operations tested positive for COVID-19, will resume this Sunday, July 19, with strict protocols in place, according to the track’s Twitter feed. The protocols provide for live attendance, but fans will be required to wear facemasks, follow social distancing rules and will be subjected to temperature screening.

Sunday’s nominal feature is a first-level allowance for main-track sprinters and the track has drawn programs through July 22. The Wednesday program, which begins at 1:35 CT, is highlighted by four Texas-bred/Texas-stallion stakes races that were to be contested during the supension.

According to a post on the Texas Thoroughbred Association Twitter feed, purses at Lone Star are being raised by 18% beginning this weekend, though none of the purses for the races drawn through the coming week reflects the hike. The post also indicates that two additional race dates have been added, Aug. 5 and Aug. 12. The races for those dates will be those that were previously canceled and brought-back book races. Both divisions of the $100,000-estimated Texas Thoroughbred (Sales) Futurity will be run Aug. 11, however the second legs of the Texas Stallion Stakes have been postponed. The TTA said it hopes to conduct those races at Sam Houston Race Park in January.
