Fifth Risk is Fifth Winner for Outwork

FIFTH RISK (f, 2, Outwork–Blue Orleans, by Bluegrass Cat) was the even-money favorite to become the fifth winner for her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo). The dark bay filly prompted the pace through an opening quarter in :22.54 and a half in :46.13. The pacesetter began to tire into the stretch, but Fifth Risk was challenged by Jade Empress (Shanghai Bobby) and gamely outbattled that foe to the wire to win by a half-length. Fifth Risk, a $160,000 FTKJUL yearling, is a half-sister to Go On Mary (Broken Vow), SW, $225,303. More Than Ready Filly Runs Away From Them on Spa Lawn

CALDEE (f, 2, More Than Ready–Holiday’s Jewel {SP, $393,052}, by Harlan’s Holiday), let go at a tick under 9-1 off an even fifth-place run sprinting on the dirt here July 19, seemed to find her preferred surface Sunday with a dominant front-running score. Facing minimal early resistance as she cruised along through splits of :25.25, :49.49 and 1:13.58, the bay had plenty left in the tank for the stretch drive, and widened at will to defeat fellow second timer Uptown Flirt (Speightster) by 6 3/4 lengths. Favored firster Black Sand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) advanced ominously heading for home but flattened out in the lane to settle for third. The winner is the second foal and first to race out of a mare who was stakes-placed on the Aqueduct inner track before being purchased for $160,000 by John Ed Anthony’s Shortleaf Stable at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. Nyquist Gets First Stakes Score at Woodbine

Gretzky the Great earned the first black-type win for his first-crop sire (by Uncle Mo) as he eventually wore down frontrunner Into the Sunrise to prevail in Woodbine’s Soaring Free S. Sunday afternoon. Second to favored Ready to Repeat going five panels over the local lawn July 12, the bay broke through by daylight over a rained-off six furlongs Aug. 2. Away well from the outside five hole, Gretzky the Great skated along out in the clear in second as Into the Sunrise enjoyed a clear lead and Ready to Repeat traveled well held down on the fence in third. The pacesetter posted a :45.51 half and looked to have the race to himself at the top of the stretch, but Gretzky the Great and Kazushi Kimura kept chipping away to seize the lead in the waning moments.

“I was so satisfied the last time and today that was the best performance of his life,” said Kimura.

David Anderson paid $310,000 for the winner’s dam Pearl Turn while she was in foal to Pioneerof the Nile at KEENOV ’16. Pearl Turn produced a Quality Road colt in 2019 and was bred to Uncle Mo for 2021. The Uncle Mo–Bernardini cross is a potent one, having produced Grade I winner Mo Town and Grade II winners Mopotism and Modernist.

Lukas Recovered From COVID-19, Tests Negative

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who reportedly had tested positive for coronavirus last week and was in isolation, has recovered from the illness and received a negative COVID-19 test result, according to a tweet from his grandson Brady Wayne Lukas Sunday morning.

“Wayne has completed the isolation period and has received a negative test result,” Lukas said. “He’s back!”

The 84-year-old conditioner was first reported to be positive for COVID-19 Aug. 12. In a tweet, Brady Lukas said, “Wayne recently tested positive for COVID-19 and has since been isolating at home and following CDC and health care provider recommendations. Fortunately, he had not been at work for several days prior to the first symptom, so no one else at the barn is impacted.”
