Fasig-Tipton Releases Safety Protocols for California Sale

Fasig-Tipton has released safety protocols for the upcoming California Fall Yearling Sale, which will be held Monday, Oct. 19, at Los Alamitos. All of Fasig-Tipton’s COVID-19 safety protocols are in accordance with California regulations, are subject to change, and are designed in the interest of the health and safely of sales participants. The safety protocols include:

Temperature checks and health screening questions will be required for admittance for all staff, participants, and attendees
Cloth face coverings are required
A minimum of six feet must be maintained between people with no congregating allowed
No indoor food service will be available
No valet parking will be available
High-touch surfaces will be sanitized at least every two hours with increased cleaning and disinfection throughout
Frequent hand washing with both soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds is recommended

Gunnevera Retired from Racing

Salomon Del Valle’s Gunnevera (Dialed In–Unbridled Rage, by Unbridled), a winner of a trio of graded stakes and runner up in a quartet of Grade I/Group 1’s through a career that spanned four seasons, has been retired from racing. Stud plans have yet to be determined.

Victorious three starts at two, including the GII Saratoga Special S. and the GIII Delta Jackpot, the Antonio Sano trainee took the next season’s GII Xpressbet Fountain of Youth S. before finishing third in the GI Florida Derby. Later that summer, he won Gulfstream’s Tangelo S. ahead of a runner-up effort behind West Coast (Flatter) in the GI Travers S. During his 4-year-old season, he was third in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational before collecting a win in a Gulfstream optional claimer later that summer. Runner up in the GI Woodward, he filled the same position behind Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) in the 2018 GI Breeders’ Cup Classic. Third in his second attempt at the Pegasus World Cup, he made what would be his final start in the 2019 G1 Dubai World Cup, finishing third behind Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet).

The 6-year-old, who has faced foot issues, throughout much of his career–including a fracture last summer–retires with six wins from 21 starts and earnings of $5,561,800.

Spendthrift Releases Reduced Stud Fees for ’21

Spendthrift Farm announced Tuesday the reduction of stud fees for most of its current roster of stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm in 2021. Leading sire Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) heads the roster at a previously announced fee of $225,000 S&N. Booked full, he represents the only stallion with an increased fee in 2021. Top sire Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy) and second-season sire Omaha Beach will both stand for $35,000 S&N. Malibu Moon stood for $60,000, while Omaha Beach stood for $45,000 in 2020. Fellow second-season sire Vino Rosso (Curlin), winner of last fall’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic who stood for $30,000 this season, will stand for $25,000 S&N. Multiple Grade I-winning millionaire Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}) will also join Spendthrift for the 2021 season following a start in the Breeders’ Cup next month at Keeneland. His fee will be announced upon retirement.

“Breeders are the backbone of our industry, and the bottom line is that stud farms only go as breeders go. We are all in this together,” said B. Wayne Hughes. “Our team recognizes the challenges of the times and how the entire breeding community has been affected this year. If we had room to lower a stud fee, we did it. We wish every participant in this great industry the best of luck and the best of health in 2021.”

Multiple Grade I-winning juvenile Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro), 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole (Eskenderya), and the Northern Hemisphere’s leading third-crop Sire Goldencents (Into Mischief) will all stand for $15,000 S&N. All three stood for $25,000 in 2020.

Additionally, fees have been reduced for the following stallions (all S&N); Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humo) and Lord Nelson (Pulpit) ($10,000); Cross Traffic (Unbridled’s Song) and Maximus Mischief (Into Mischief) ($7,500); Brody’s Cause (Giant’s Causeway), Cinco Charlie (Indian Charlie), Cloud Computing (Maclean’s Music), Coal Front (Stay Thirsty), Dominus (Smart Strike), Free Drop Billy (Union Rags), Gormley (Malibu Moon), Hit It a Bomb (War Front), More Spirit (Eskendereya) and Temple City (Dynaformer) ($5,000).

Nashville Under Consideration for Breeders’ Cup Sprint

WinStar Farm and China Horse Club’s ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Nashville (Speightstown), who took his record to two-for-two with a towering allowance success at Keeneland Oct. 10, could make his next start in the Nov. 7 GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint over the same track and distance, WinStar General Manager David Hanley said Monday.

“It’s a bit too early for a final decision, but I would say the nothing has been ruled out at this point,” Hanley said. “I haven’t discussed it with [WinStar President/CEO and Racing Manager] Elliott [Walden] or [trainer] Steve [Asmussen] and they will be the ones to decide.”

A $460,000 Keeneland September purchase in 2018, Nashville was sent off as the prohibitive odds-on favorite in a sloppy Saratoga maiden Sept. 2 and romped home by 11 1/2 lengths, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in a spectacular 1:14.48 (video). The 1-2 chalk in a non-two-lifetime allowance in Lexington over the past weekend, Nashville led past every pole en route to a 9 3/4-length score (video). Hanley said Nashville has emerged unscathed from the effort.

“He seems to have come out of the race just fine, none the worse for wear,” he said. “He ran such a big race first time out at Saratoga, but you weren’t sure that he just didn’t run so big because of the slop. I wouldn’t say we expected to see the kind of performance he put up the other day, but you sure hope he could reproduce the debut and it was nice to see him do it on a fast track.”

Hanley explained that Nashville had his fair share of issues growing up.

“He had a few little setbacks and we just decided to give him some time,” he said. “There was nothing major that was wrong with him, he had some bone bruising and he tended to be a little headstrong, so we gave him the time and it looks like it’s paying off.”

Hanley indicated that if they decide against a run in the Sprint, Nashville could make an appearance in one of the undercard stakes on Breeders’ Cup weekend as a steppingstone to the GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita in late December. Nashville is cataloged as a racing or stallion prospect for the Keeneland November Sale, but Hanley said it is unlikely he’ll go through the ring.
