Harty Outdoes Former Boss in La Brea

For 14 years, Irishman Eoin Harty worked as the right-hand man to trainer Bob Baffert, helping oversee the careers of the dual Classic-winning duo of Silver Charm (1997) and Real Quiet (1998) among many other luminaries. For the last two decades, Harty has served as an American-based conditioner for Godolphin, having developed the likes of Street Cry (Ire), champion Tempera–whom he trained to a victory in the 2001 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies–and Dubai Escapade. Now 58 and a decade removed from his most recent Grade I success, Harty was back in the spotlight following a 20-1 upset by Fair Maiden (Street Boss) in Saturday’s GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita. Golden Principal (Constitution) and Merneith (American Pharoah) completed a 2-3 finish for the Baffert barn.

The La Brea field was caught in a nice line and Fair Maiden raced prominently early before drifting back to the latter half of the field as Biddy Duke (Bayern) poked through to take up the running down the backstretch. Ridden quietly by Northern California import Ricky Gonzalez, while racing three or four off the rail in the slipstream of the Chad Brown-trained Motivated Selller (Into Mischief) around the turn, Fair Maiden edged into the four path to follow the move of Golden Principal into the stretch. Pulled out into the clear to lay down her challenge shortly thereafter, Fair Maiden hit high gear at the furlong grounds and raced away to a convincing success. Favored Finite (Munnings) settled well back in the field and made mild late progress into fourth. It was a first Grade I winner for jockey Ricky Gonzalez, who shifted his tack from up north for the winter.

“Eoin [Harty] said she was doing really, really well, to just put her in the race,” he explained. “There were quite a few speeds. ‘Just put her in the race, get her clear and get her to the outside.’ We hit the stretch and as soon as we hit the stretch, she went on the outside and was just full of run.”

It was the first Grade I for Harty since Victor’s Cry, a son of the aforementioned Street Cry, took out the 2010 Shoemaker Mile.

An Arlington maiden romper at second asking last season, Fair Maiden won the grassy Catch a Glimpse S. at Woodbine and was a narrowly beaten third in the GI Natalma S. before finishing well-beaten behind Sharing (Speightstown) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. The chestnut resumed to post a 2 1/4-length allowance when trying dirt for the first time in her career at Churchill Sept. 19 and was a troubled fourth to Merneith and Motivated Seller in the Qatar Fort Springs S. on Breeders’ Cup Saturday at Keeneland Nov. 7.

Pedigree Notes:

Fair Maiden is the seventh Group 1/Grade I winner for her sire and is one of two winners from three to race from her dam, an $875,000 graduate of the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Fair Maiden’s third dam won the 2000 GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Mother Goose S. before going on to produce MGISP Dunkirk (Unbridled’s Song). Shieldmaiden, the 10th daughter of the late Smart Strike to produce a top-level winner, was sold for $30,000 in foal to Animal Kingdom at Keeneland November in 2017 and produced colts by Passion For Action in each of the last two seasons before being covered by the same son of Speightstown last year.

Cairo Prince Colt Springs the Upset in San Antonio

John Sondereker’s Kiss Today Goodbye swooped to the lead in the dying strides to upset the field in the GII San Antonio S. at Santa Anita Saturday. The 15-1 shot settled at the back of the pack as heavy favorite Mucho Gusto (Mucho Macho Man) shadowed Take the One O One through fractions of :23.83 and :47.81. Mucho Gusto moved up to challenge the pacesetter from the outside at the top of the lane as Idol put in his bid along the rail. The three looked set to battle it out to the wire, but Kiss Today Goodbye unleashed a powerful late rally down the center of the track to just get on top in the final strides. Mucho Gusto tired late and settled for fourth in his first start since a fourth-place effort in the Feb. 29 Saudi Cup.

“I was impressed with his last race and I wasn’t even riding him,” winning jockey Mike Smith said. “He ran by me in that last race. I thank [trainer] Eric Kruljac for the opportunity of riding him and for his great training job. The race was shaping up for him with the speed up front and when it came time to run, he took off. I just guided him around the track.”

Third behind Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) in the Aug. 1 Shared Belief S. at Del Mar, Kiss Today Goodbye moved to the lawn to finish fifth in the Sept. 6 GII Del Mar Derby and fourth in the Oct. 18 GII Twilight Derby. He returned to the main track to win a one-mile optional claimer at Del Mar last time out Nov. 14.

“He was always very immature early on,” Kruljac said. “It just took him longer to get to where he is and I think he is really just beginning to mature. About four races back he got absolutely sandblasted and was basically eased in the race. I basically told Mike, ‘He’s better with the kickback, but it was a factor that day.’ As you can see when Mike came back, he ate the dirt, the colt has put it all together and Mike gave him an absolutely perfect ride. The pace gods were on our side.”

Sondereker began owning racehorses in the early 2000s after retiring from a 40-year career in the financial industry. Kruljac credited the owner with the decision to run in the San Antonio.

“John said his sheet numbers were going up and up, and he is a numbers guy,” Kruljac said. “The horse has trained like that but as a trainer I look at the older horses and see what they have already done, I go, ‘Oh my God, what are we doing?’ But he was right. It sure set up well, and the two scratches helped.”

With some 20 horses in training in California with Kruljac, the owner made a big splash at the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase when he purchased a filly by War Front (hip 248) for $625,000.

Pedigree Notes:

Savvy Hester was third in the 2014 GII Dance Smartly S. Kiss Today Goodbye, her second foal, is the fifth graded winner for his multiple graded stakes winning sire, Cairo Prince. The Airdrie stallion has also been represented by last year’s GII Prioress S. winner Royal Charlotte, this year’s GIII Ohio Derby winner Dean Martini, 2018 GIII Iroquois S. winner Cairo Cat and 2019 GII Sands Point S. winner New and Improved.

Will’s Way Passes Away at Old Friends Cabin Creek

Will’s Way (Easy Goer–Willamae, by Tentam), whose racing career was highlighted by a hard-fought victory in the 1996 GI Travers S., passed away Dec. 24 at Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center, NY. He was just over a week shy of celebrating his 28th birthday.

Campaigned by Rudlein Stable and trained by H. James Bond, Will’s Way didn’t begin his career until early in his sophomore season, but was a neck second to GI Preakness S. hero Louis Quatorze (Sovereign Dancer) in the GII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga before turning the tables on that rival and Skip Away (Skip Trial) in the Midsummer Derby. Seventh to Old Friends Kentucky inmate Alphabet Soup (Cozzene) in the 1996 GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, Will’s Way was runner-up in the 1997 GII Suburban H. before besting Formal Gold (Black Tie Affair {Ire}) by a nose in the 1997 GI Whitney H., with Skip Away a distant third. Will’s Way had a brief stud career, siring GI Cigar Mile H. hero Lion Tamer and GSW Willy O’The Valley.

“We all loved him so much,” said Joann Pepper, owner and manager of Cabin Creek. “He would take our breath away when he decided to run. I will miss brushing his tail and kissing his star–I’ll even miss letting him chew on me,” Pepper added, referring to Will’s sometimes cantankerous personality. “It was such an honor to care for him.”

“He was such an exciting racehorse, and we were so thrilled to have him with us first in Kentucky and then in New York,” said Old Friends founder and president Michael Blowen. “Our heart goes out to our friends at Cabin Creek. Joann and Will had a very special bond, and we know he will be sorely missed by everyone there.”
