Rapid-Fire Second Winner for Arrogate

4th-Monmouth, $56,125, Msw, 9-6, 2yo, 6f, 1:11.20, ft, 6 1/2 lengths.
AFFABLE MONARCH (c, 2, Arrogate–Social Queen {MGSW, $344,164}, by Dynaformer) gave his late sire (by Unbridled's Song) a second first-crop winner at Monmouth Park about 30 minutes after Adversity broke the mold up at Saratoga. The Colts Neck homebred, off at 13-5, was beaten for speed and trailed behind a quick pace through the opening exchanges. Equipped with a shadow roll for this first go, the gray colt made stealthy inside progress leaving the three-eighths pole, got through an inviting opening at the inside with a little less than a quarter-mile to race and careered away from his rivals to score by 6 1/2 lengths. Pioneer of Medina (Pioneerof the Nile) was second, while fast-working and regally bred favorite Courvoisier (Tapit–Take Charge Brandi) was third. The winner's dam was a dual Grade III winner on the turf, including the GIII Eatontown H. at this venue before going on to produce fellow turfer Force the Pass (Speightstown), GISW, $1,359,114, who stood his first season at stud in Maryland in 2020 before being sold to Saudi Arabia. Herself a daughter of SW and GSP Gal On the Go (Irgun), Social Queen is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Force the Pass (hip 154 in Keeneland September), was barren to Quality Road for this year and was most recently covered by Improbable. Sales history: $425,000 RNA Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $34,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Arrogate Represented By First Winner at the Spa

Sent off as part of an entry at just over 3-1, DJ Stable's Adversity (Arrogate–Artemis Agrotera, by Roman Ruler) became the first winner for her late freshman sire (by Unbridled's Song) with a second-out success Monday at Saratoga. Run over a main track that was downgraded from good to sloppy and sealed by a quick-passing storm, the grey filly–a debut seventh sprinting over the turf course Aug. 12–stepped well from an outside gate and pressed the pace from the outside beneath the hot-riding Ricardo Santana, Jr. Asked to win her race in upper stretch, she hit the front about a furlong from home and kept on to score by a comfortable 2 1/4 lengths despite failing to switch her leads late. The Honorable Ruth (Trinniberg) was second, while Adversity's entry-mate Carbon (Ironicus) closed for third.

Bred by Chester and Mary Broman, like DJ's GIII With Anticipation S. winner Coinage (Tapit–Bar of Gold), Adversity made a single appearance at public auction, fetching $335,000 at OBS April after breezing her eighth of a mile in a smooth :10 flat. Artemis Agrotera, who won the GI Frizette S. in 2013 and this track's GI Ballerina S. as a 3-year-old the following season, is also the dam of Adversity's SW half-brother Chestertown (Tapit), the $2-million topper at OBS March in 2019, and has a yearling colt by Into Mischief and colt foal by the Spendthrift maestro. Artemis Agrotera was most recently covered by Curlin.

Grace Adler Dominates in Del Mar Debutante

Willow Grace Farm and Michael Lund Petersen's Grace Adler (Curlin) swept to the lead with a powerful five-wide move into the stretch and pulled away effortlessly down the lane to win the

GI TVG Del Mar Debutante by 11 1/4 lengths at Del Mar Sunday. Favored Eda (Munnings) was pressed every step by Elm Drive (Mohaymen) through a quarter in :21.78 and a half in :44.37 as Grace Adler settled off the pace while running free and clear. She moved closer without being asked on the bend, ricocheted to the lead off the turn and, meeting no opposition, strode away powerfully down the lane for an authoritative victory.

The victory gave Bob Baffert his 10th win in the Del Mar Debutante. While the trainer was happy with the effort of Grace Adler, he admitted he knew stablemate Eda was in trouble as she battled on the hot early pace.

“I wasn't happy with [Eda's] position early because they were going way too fast up front,” Baffert said. “Grace Adler is a really good filly and when she started to make her move, you could tell by Trevor Denman's voice that she was really making up the ground. They're both good fillies, it's just too bad that Eda got caught up in a speed duel. It was set up for Grace Adler.”

Flavien Prat, who was riding his third Del Mar Debutante winner, said the race developed much as Baffert had predicted.

“Bob just told me that she wasn't as fast as the other fillies, but that she'd come running,” Prat said. “He was certainly right. It might have looked like I moved too early with her, but it was more a case of them coming back to me. We were going forward and they were coming back.”

Grace Adler was stretching out to seven furlongs Sunday after battling to a determined 3/4-length debut victory going five furlongs over the Del Mar track July 31.

Pedigree Notes:

Grace Adler is the 45th graded stakes winner for two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

Her dam, Our Khrysty, won the 2010 GIII Turnback the Alarm H. and is a half-sister to GI Whitney S. winner Bullsbay (Tiznow). The mare, purchased by Blue Heaven Farm for $600,000 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November sale, produced a colt by Into Mischief in 2020 and a filly by Uncle Mo this year before being bred back to War Front. Her Into Mischief colt RNA'd for $350,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale and is catalogued as hip 99 at the upcoming Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Rising Star Flightline Dazzles at Del Mar

'TDN Rising Star' Flightline (Tapit), away since turning in one of the best debut performances of all time, a 13 1/4-length romp at Santa Anita Apr. 24 that earned him a 105 Beyer Speed Figure, showed that effort was far from a fluke Sunday as he demolished winners at Del Mar to remain unbeaten and completely untested.

Reportedly given ample time so as not to react from his freakish first outing before then coming up with a foot abscess, the $1-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad had generated more buzz with his recent local works, and was off at 1-5 odds that in retrospect were free money. Away without incident from the outside, the bay pressed a :22.01 opening quarter and took over midway around the bend. He posted a :44.17 half with no ask, and soared to the wire with his head cocked slightly towards the stands, officially 12 3/4 lengths in front at the finish. Escape Route (Hard Spun), who earned a 91 Beyer himself last out, was best of the rest. The winner stopped the clock in 1:08.05.

Jane Lyon's Summer Wind purchased dam Feathered (Indian Charlie) for $2.35 million in foal to War Front at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. The 2015 GIII Edgewood S. winner, who was also a MGISP juvenile, is a granddaughter of MGISW Finder's Fee (Storm Cat). Her now 2-year-old Pioneerof the Nile colt sold for $100,000 at Fasig-Tipton October and was subsequently sent to Russia, where he too won on debut. Feathered has a yearling colt named Failsafe (Tapit) and a foal colt named Eagles Flight (Curlin). She visited Into Mischief this past season.
