Thoroughbred Industry Raises $517K for Tornado Relief

The Thoroughbred industry in Kentucky has raised $517,224 for both immediate response and longer-term recovery needs of individuals and families impacted by the deadly tornadoes occurring in Western Kentucky Dec. 10 and 11. The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association organized a GoFundMe page Dec. 11, which raised $318,199 since inception. Further donations came in, including a season to Triple Crown winning stallion Justify donated by Ashford Stud/Coolmore America and private sources, raising the total quickly. All told, 315 Thoroughbred breeders, racehorse owners including Spendthrift Farm, trainers, jockeys, industry stalwarts like The Jockey Club and Breeders' Cup, Ltd., out-of-state entities We Are NY Racing and the Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance, and members of racing media.

By Tuesday, Dec. 14, response funds were directed immediately to farmers, livestock, and agricultural producers in Mayfield (Graves County), Oak Grove (Christian County), Dawson Springs (Hopkins and Caldwell Counties) and Princeton (Caldwell County) via a distribution channel set up by Don Campbell, a Thoroughbred owner/breeder in Princeton, and his neighbors Bradley & Rachel Boyd, who run an American Quarter Horse operation. In addition to experiencing major damage to their homes, survivors also had catastrophic loss of livestock, feed, fencing and equipment. In addition to multiple trailers of feed and equipment paid for by KTA, substantial amounts of food, pet food, toiletries, water, clothing and feed were made by James “Mattress Mack” McIngvale.

Funding has been made available for short-term housing needs and will be made available for long-term housing recovery needs for those experiencing a gap in Federal and State disaster relief. Efforts will be coordinated via the Community Foundation for West Kentucky, located in Paducah. The Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky in Hazard will function as the custodian for the funds raised, and each donation will receive a tax letter. Slew Trainer Turner Enters Home Hospice Care

Billy Turner, who called the shots on the career of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, was to enter home hospice care Dec. 27 as he continues to wage a battle against cancer, which has spread to his lungs.

According to a GoFundMe page created by horse owner and breeder Pavla Nygaard, Turner, 81, was diagnosed with prostate cancer about two years ago, which spread to and weakened his bones. According to the GoFundMe page, Turner was admitted to the hospital Dec. 17 with shortness of breath and fluid aspirated from his lungs indicated that the cancer had spread there. According to the page, Turner has elected not to receive further treatment.

Upon conclusion of his training career following the 2008 recession, the GoFundMe page explains that Turner and his wife Pat moved into a townhouse on the property of the Ocala Jockey Club, owned by Nygaard and her husband Erik. The couple sold the farm this past August, and negotiated a continuing lifetime rental agreement on behalf of the Turners, but the new owners of the farm served the Turners notice and forced them out of their accommodations. The Nygaards were successful in securing a new home off the farm for the Turners, but the former trainer's health subsequently took a turn for the worse.

The Nygaards have pledged to match up to $10,000 in donations.

“The world of racing owes much to Billy Turner's masterful guidance of Seattle Slew and his legacy,” wrote Pavla Nygaard on the page. “It will mean much to Billy to have the financial support of his and Seattle's Slew's fans, as well as prayers and words of encouragement.”

Business Brisk For Santa Anita Opener

In spite of six races moved from the turf to the dirt, resulting in 10 program scratches, a total of $2.3 million was wagered on track and total pari-mutuel handle was $19.4 million, making it the third-best opening day figures ever.

“We really want to thank the fans for supporting us and the horsemen for going with the changes and participating,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager, Nate Newby. “Although it didn't rain yesterday, we had over 4 1/2 inches of rain in the five days leading into Sunday, so the decision was made to come off the turf.

“I want to acknowledge the great job Dennis Moore and his team did yesterday in having the main track in tremendous shape. We had great racing and some great performances, just a fabulous day,” Newby added.

Practical Joke’s Girl With a Dream Takes Letellier Memorial

Girl With a Dream broke sharply and made all to win the Letellier Memorial S. and become the fifth stakes winner for her freshman sire Practical Joke (Into Mischief) Monday at Fair Grounds. The 3-5 favorite, adding Lasix for this effort, grabbed the lead and was pressed through an opening quarter in :22.49. She was joined by stablemate Com' on Sweet Luv at the top of the lane after a half in :46.42 and determinedly held that rival at bay to the wire.

Girl With a Dream graduated by 6 3/4 lengths in her five-furlong bow at Ellis Park July 24. A well-beaten eighth after a troubled trip in the Sept. 5 GI Spinaway S., she was second in a Keeneland optional claimer Oct. 21 before winning a six-furlong Churchill allowance last time out Nov. 13.

Henley, a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner and multiple Grade I placed Mr. Commons (Artie Schiller), produced a filly by Twirling Candy last year and was bred to Gift Box for 2022.
