Wagering Down in March, Narrowly Up for First Quarter

Betting on U.S. Thoroughbred races dropped slightly in March compared to the month's total in 2021, while remaining narrowly ahead through 2022's first three months compared to its pace from the first quarter of 2021, according to Equibase's report of economic indicators released Tuesday.

Overall, $942,589,741 was wagered in March, a 2.37% decline from $965,453,678 in March of 2021. The number of race days conducted was nearly identical, with 291 being run this March compared to 292 last year, making the average wagering per race day $3,239,140, down 2.03% from last March's average of $3,306,348. Purses rose 6.15% to $86,833,249 this March compared to $81,798,689 from last year. Average field size dropped 3.03% from 7.59 horses per race to 7.36.

Through the first quarter of 2022, a total of $2,796,360,290 has been bet, a 1.09% increase from $2,766,166,337 in 2021. However, with 807 race days having been run through March this year compared to 766 by the same point in 2021, average wagering per race day is down 4.04% at $3,465,130 compared to $3,611,183. Purses are clearly outpacing last year's numbers at $244,753,188, a 13.84% increase from 2021's first quarter total of $214,998,157, while field size for the first quarter averaged 7.56, a 3% decrease from 7.79 in 2021.

Baffert Banned in NY Through ‘At Least’ Early July

Citing Section 910 of the New York Racing, Pari-Mutuel Wagering and Breeding Law, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) has announced that it will honor the 90-day suspension handed down to trainer Bob Baffert and that the conditioner is “prohibited from participating in any New York State horse racing activity through at least July 2, 2022.”

Section 910 reads: “§ 910. Reciprocity of licenses. All license denials, suspensions and revocations imposed by the pertinent racing and gambling authorities of other jurisdictions, including states, United States territories, and Canadian provinces shall be recognized and enforced by the commission …”

According to a release from the NYSGC, Baffert is suspended in New York and may not enter any horses to run at any New York track, including Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga–run by the New York Racing Association–as well as Finger Lakes Race Track.

New York is one of 38 racing states that honors out-of-state suspensions issued by regulators.

James Keogh, Chance Timm to Partner at Grovendale

Chance Timm will become a partner in leading sales agency Grovendale, which has been owned and managed by James B. Keogh, the company announced Monday. The newly formed partnership reflects a longtime friendship and business relationship that comes full circle with the partnership.

Grovendale Sales is a Thoroughbred sales consignment based in Versailles, Kentucky, offering sales representation, matings, investments and Thoroughbred management consultation.

Timm has over 12 years' experience in the commercial Thoroughbred business. He spent eight years at Lane's End Farm as the Director of Stallion Seasons and Shares, while actively working with both the sales and bloodstock divisions. Most recently the Executive Director of Don Alberto Corp, Chance oversaw the sale and management of over $10 million in public sales, including the highest-priced yearling in the Northern Hemisphere in 2021, a yearling colt by Into Mischief out of Paola Queen, who sold for $2.6 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale.

“I've been fortunate to work with some top organizations and quality bloodstock,” said Timm. “I'm very thankful for the opportunities I've been given but especially by James Keogh to partner with him. I have a lot of confidence and respect for James and what he has built in Grovendale Sales. We will represent owners and breeders at the major sales and I look forward to building our yearling and horses-of-racing-age drafts while adding further quality to the breeding stock sales where James has always been so successful.”

Keogh, a native of Ireland, has over 30 years' experience in the Thoroughbred industry while based in Kentucky, building Grovendale into a major sales mainstay over the past 10 years. Said Keogh of the new partnership, “Bringing on Chance is an opportunity for me to grow and build the sales agency, while maintaining a focus on quality over quantity. The partnership will enable us to expand our reach both with Chance's relationships as well as a greater representation at every major sale.”
