Great Lady M Highlights Los Al Summer Stakes Schedule

Three stakes–including a graded event–worth a combined $425,000 highlight the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Alamitos. The 10-day season is scheduled to begin Friday, June 24 and continue through Sunday, July 10. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday opening weekend (June 24-26) and the final week (July 8-10) and Friday-Monday (July 1-4) the middle week. The July 4 program is a special holiday card and will include a handicapping contest with two berths in the 2023 NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas on the line. Post time will be 1 p.m. each day.

The richest event on the calendar is the $200,000 GII Great Lady M. S. for fillies and mares at six furlongs. Captured by champion Gamine (Into Mischief) in 2021, the Great Lady M. will be offered Monday, July 4. The $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby for 3-year-olds will be run Saturday, July 9. The other stakes on the schedule is the $100,000 Bertrando for 3-year-olds and up bred or sired in California at one mile Saturday, June 25.

West Point, Lane’s End Team Up for $1.7-Million Tapit Colt

West Point Thoroughbreds and Lane's End Farm teamed up to purchase a colt by Tapit (hip 885) for $1.7 million Thursday at OBS. The gray, the auction's fourth seven-figure juvenile, was consigned by Eddie Woods on behalf of his breeder, Gainesway Farm. Out of Pension (Seeking the Gold), he is a full-brother to graded stakes winner Thoughtfully.

NYRA to Launch New ‘Triple Play’ Wager May 1

The New York Racing Association is creating a new Pick 3 wager to be made available exclusively to retail customers on Sundays during the upcoming spring/summer meet at Belmont Park, NYRA announced Thursday.

Featuring a $3 bet minimum and 24% takeout, the NYRA Triple Play will cover the final three races of Sunday cards throughout the 44-day spring summer meet. Each NYRA Triple Play will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool. Wagering on the NYRA Triple Play will be available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country.

The NYRA Triple Play will launch May 1, the first Sunday of the spring/summer meet, which opens Apr. 28 and will offer 59 stakes races worth $16.95 million in total purse money.

The retail-only NYRA Triple Play is the latest piece of a NYRA pilot program designed to reward the everyday player with opportunities for significant payouts. In 2021, NYRA replaced its $.20 jackpot Empire Pick 6 with a $1 Pick 6 available to retail customers only. Previous to that, NYRA restricted both the Late Pick 5 and the Cross-Country Pick 5 to retail customers only.

“NYRA is committed to adding new wagering opportunities that appeal to our core customers,” said Joe Longo, General Manager of NYRA Content Services. “We look forward to further evaluating how the Triple Play performs within the context of our overall wagering menu.”
The 15-day Aqueduct spring meet continues through this Sunday with live racing offered Thursday-Sunday.

First Starter a Winner for Freshman Sire McCraken at Keeneland

Freshman sire McCraken (Ghostzapper) got immediately off the mark with his first starter at Keeneland Thursday afternoon.

Drawn widest of all in post nine, Crackalacking (f, 2, McCraken–Sacred Moon, by Malibu Moon) forced the issue from an outside third, gained command around the far turn and blew the race apart from there to graduate by five lengths at odds of 18-1.

Extremely well-backed, rail-drawn firster Grand Oak (Ire) (Speightstown), off as the even-money favorite from a 6-1 morning-line quote for trainer Rusty Arnold, was a good second after a tough trip.

It was the first career wins at Keeneland for winning jockey Ferrin Peterson and trainer Sarah Hamilton, respectively.

After producing a colt by Klimt in 2021, the winner's dam was bred back to that sire for 2022.

McCraken, a three-time graded winner and runner-up in the GI betfair.com Haskell Invitational S., stands for $5,000 at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Ky.
