Dettori Positive For Covid

Frankie Dettori has tested positive for Covid-19 and will therefore miss his rides at Meydan on Friday as he self isolates.

“I won't be riding this weekend, as I've tested positive for Covid,” the jockey said in a video posted to Twitter. “I'm restricted in my room for a few days. I'm feeling a bit under the weather, but I've had my vaccine so we should survive. I'll keep you posted, but I'm not going to be doing much anyway.”

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G2 Zabeel Mile was among the highlights of Dettori's rides at Friday's carnival meeting. Danny Tudhope has now been named on last year's G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein winner.

Tattersalls Appoints New German, Scandinavian Representatives

Tattersalls has appointed Tina Rau as its representative in Germany, and Tina Henriksson as its representative in Scandinavia.

Rau, who operates Tina Rau Bloodstock, has purchased multiple Classic winners, including 2020 German 2000 Guineas winner Fearless King (GB) (Kingman {GB}) from Tattersalls.

“Tattersalls has always been held in the highest esteem by German breeders, owners and trainers and I am excited to be joining the Tattersalls team,” she said. “Tattersalls is recognised in Germany as the European market-leader and I am looking forward to promoting Tattersalls in Germany and to assisting German vendors and purchasers with their visits to Newmarket.”

Henriksson, who is based at Bro Park in Sweden, was an amateur jockey and now holds an amateur trainer's license as well as being a physiotherapist and equine therapist.

“I am thrilled to be joining Tattersalls as representative for Scandinavia,” said Henriksson. “The racing industry in Scandinavia continues to grow, with more horses competing on the global stage and more horses being imported each year, and I am relishing the opportunity to bring clients from Sweden, Norway and Denmark to Newmarket to buy at the numerous market-leading sales staged by Tattersalls.”

BHA Issues Update On Whip Project

The Whip Consultation Steering Group is discussing possible recommendations stemming from the three-month consultation period last summer, the British Horseracing Authority said in an update on the whip consultation project on Thursday. This stage of the project has been slightly delayed due to Covid complications, and is now expected to be completed towards the end of winter, with the proposals scheduled to be considered by the BHA board in April. After a period of adjustments, the full report and recommendations is to be published in May, with any new rules expected to come into affect in the autumn.

The steering group is comprised of experts from across the racing industry and wider sectors including politics, horse welfare and the media.

Once the steering group's recommendations are complete, they will be discussed with a selection of relevant individuals and bodies before being finalised and presented to the BHA board.

Bell and Moore Join Forces With Ace Rothstein in Bahrain

Ace Rothstein (More Than Ready) is one of 12 horses signed on in Friday's Listed HRH The Crown Prince's Cup, sponsored by Howden. The Michael Bell runner has won three times, including over the Sakhir turf course in a 1800-metre local Group 2, the Al Adiyat Racing Cup, on Jan. 7. With that effort, he defeated the reopposing duo of Medal Winner (Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) and Macaque (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}).

Ridden by Charlie Bishop in that effort, Bell has engaged the services of 2021 Longines World's Best Jockey Ryan Moore. Moore last rode in Bahrain in 2020, when his mount Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) ran third in the Bahrain International Trophy.

“Ace Rothstein won a couple of races back in England having had a late start to his 3-year-old career,” said Bell from Bahrain. “He came out to Bahrain just before Christmas and was a bit unlucky in one of the Turf Series races when he got a bit squeezed on the rail. He then won a nice trial race for the Crown Prince's Cup 10 days ago.”

Bell continued, “In theory, he'll have to step up again. He was getting 6 1/2 pounds from Medal Winner who is one of the best horses trained in Bahrain, but he beat him pretty emphatically and it was over a trip short of our best. We're stepping up to 10 furlongs this week which should suit so even though we're worse off at the weights, the extra furlong should stand him in good stead.”

Regarding the jockey switch, Bell added, “We've got a very experienced jockey and the horse is definitely training well over here. He looks great and he's eating well. With the locals, it's always the same when you go overseas. When you go to Ireland you take on Aidan O'Brien, and when you come to Bahrain you take on Shaikh Isa and Fawzi Nass.”
