State Of Rest’s Dam Sold To Juddmonte

Repose (Quiet American), the dam of treble Group/Grade 1 winner State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Classic-entered Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}), has been bought by Juddmonte Farms.

Bred by Dermot Cantillon and Meta Osborne of Tinnakill House, the 10-year-old daughter of noted broodmare sire Quiet American has already hit the jackpot with two of her first three foals. State Of Rest is a rare top-level winner in three different countries, having won the Belmont Derby in America and Australia's Cox Plate last season before adding the Prix Ganay to his tally on his most recent outing in France. On Sunday he takes aim at the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, and it has already been announced that the 4-year-old will shuttle between Ireland's Rathbarry Stud and Newgate Farm in Australia upon his eventual retirement to stud.

Repose's third foal, Tranquil Lady, races in the Teme Valley Racing colours sported by her elder sibling last year, and she holds entries for the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and Cazoo Oaks, having won the G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Blue Wind S. in impressive fashion on her last start.

 A statement released by Cantillon and Osborne on Thursday read, “We are delighted to announce that Juddmonte have purchased Repose, the dam of Tinnakill-bred multiple Group 1 winner State of Rest and Oaks contender Tranquil Lady.

“Repose, a Tinnakill homebred, has given great joy to our family and her success is a testament to the hard work of Ian Thompson and the whole team at Tinnakill.

“We are delighted to entrust Repose to our friends at Juddmonte where we have no doubt she will continue to flourish for years to come with access to the world's best stallions.

“What began as a retained homebred filly has turned into an amazing journey seeing her blossom into one of the world's most promising broodmares, nurtured throughout on our family farm in Laois. We have retained her Sea The Stars filly foal and we look forward to cheering her progeny for years to come.”

Cantillon and Osborne bought Repose's dam, the Gainsborough-bred Listed winner Monaassabaat (Zilzal), from Goffs in November 2007 for €42,000. The mare was 16 at the time and she went on to produce Listed Churchill S. winner Prince Alzain (Street Sense). The unraced Repose, who is currently in foal to Frankel (GB), is a grand-daughter of the multiple champion American filly It's In The Air (Mr Prospector), whose 16 wins included five at Grade 1 level.

Nine Declared For Saturday’s G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas

Godolphin's quest for a unique 2000 Guineas treble with three different colts is set to culminate in Saturday's €500,000 G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, where the hot favourite Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) will face eight peers.

Drawn in stall one, which was occupied by two of the last three winners of the Classic in Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and Phoenix of Spain (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), he will start against the rail as he seeks compensation for his defeat in the Apr. 30 G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. The vibes are strong regarding the champion juvenile of 2021, who was at his most impressive when winning this track's G1 Vincent O'Brien National S.

“Native Trail heads back to the Curragh in great nick,” Charlie Appleby said. “Obviously, a repeat of his Newmarket run is going to make him the one to beat. There are some showers forecast, but good or good-to-soft ground should hopefully make it a fair playing field for everyone.”

Buckaroo Leads Owning Hill Charge…

Qatar Racing's May 2 Listed Tetrarch S. winner Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) has been given the green light by Joseph O'Brien, while Aidan O'Brien will seek a 12th renewal with Westerberg and Coolmore's May 8 G3 Amethyst S. runner-up Ivy League (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The private O'Brien Sr-Jr clash will be presaged by Friday's G3 Heider Family Stables Gallinule S., with Joseph represented by Ecurie Ama Zingteam's acquisition Hannibal Barca (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), last seen finishing fourth in Doncaster's G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy, and Ballydoyle's duo headed by the G3 Eyrefield S. third Anchorage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Lysander Dreams On the Line…

Goodwood offers a late portal to the G1 Cazoo Derby, with the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat S. featuring an entry in the June 4 Classic with some clout. Carrying the Classic-winning Highclere Thoroughbred Racing silks, the William Haggas-trained Lysander (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) scored by 8 1/2 lengths in a Newcastle novice Apr. 29 and has attracted support for the Blue Riband.

“He is a very exciting horse from what we have seen at home and we are going to have a look on Friday to see if he is a Derby horse,” Harry Herbert said. “He is a very exciting prospect. He comes with a big reputation, but we'll see. It's time to find out and then go on to the next level.”

It's Not Too Late…

Also on the Sussex Downs is the Listed William Hill Height of Fashion S., which has always acted as a last-ditch way into the Oaks, and there are two entries in the June 3 Classic engaged in the 10-furlong test. Qatar Racing's John and Thady Gosden-trained Emotion (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was off the mark by 16 lengths in a Kempton novice May 4, could win here and theoretically go back to Epsom to face stablemate Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who had her way back in eighth in her Sandown novice romp Apr. 22. The other Epsom hope is Quantum Leap Racing' Ottilien (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who has raced mainly in France and captured a Chantilly conditions event last time Apr. 13.

“We are relying on the thunderstorms appearing for Ottilien,” trainer David Menuisier said. “We left her in the Oaks just in case, but she is very ground-dependent. She wants at least good-to-soft ground.”

Cotter Fined €27,500 For Cobalt Positive, Misconduct

Trainer Kieran Cotter was fined €27,500 by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Referrals Committee and must pay a further €7,500 in legal costs. One of his runners, Slade Runner (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}), tested positive for cobalt and the IHRB found further misconduct by the trainer following a yard inspection.

Slade Runner won a Dundalk handicap in January and returned a cobalt reading higher than the international threshold. After the cobalt positive, there was a joint inspection of Cotter's yard by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and officers of the IHRB on Feb. 3. Cotter was found to be in breach of Rule 96(a), that disqualified the winner, Slade Runner, and that both the stake and prize-money were forfeited. The IHRB Committee fined Cotter €2,500 for this rule breach.

A number of charges were also brought against Cotter after the yard inspection, with the trainer in breach of a number of provisions under Rule 148:

  • No medicines register was maintained by the trainer prior to February of 2021 for any of his horses.
  • Used syringes and needles were left lying in a number of locations in the premises, with Cotter stating he had no knowledge of their presence and had not used them.
  • The presence also of a large number of unused syringes and needles in the barn.
  • The apparent general use of veterinary medicines, other than under veterinary supervision which suggested that Cotter was self-medicating some of the horses in his care.
  • The apparent administration via intravenous injection of medicines without veterinary oversight, contrary to proper procedures.
  • Reckless disregard to the potential effects or consequences to administering the cobalt drench to Slade Runner in particular.

Although the IHRB Referrals Committee did not find Cotter in breach of the rules for possession of illegal substances in his yard or in breach of Rule 273(xiii), they noted that his conduct was that of a serious nature. They imposed a €5,000 fine in respect of a breach of Rule 148(I), in reference that the trainer is responsible for everything connected with the welfare, training and running of all horses under the care of that trainer and that Slade Runner was administered cobalt the day before the race. A €20,000 fine was leveled against Cotter in respect to a breach of Rule 148(iii) in that he had failed to maintain his medicines register, failed to ensure that he and each of his staff having access to medicines were fully conversant with the rules and regulations relating to prohibited substances and that he had failed to be responsible for the safe keeping and administration of medicines having failed to securely lock the medicine cabinet.

Ward Says Royal Ascot Contingent His Best Ever

Since he won his first ever race at Royal Ascot in 2009, trainer Wesley Ward has attacked the meeting with quantity and quality and the result has been 12 wins. But he says this year's group, which will consist of at least seven horses, is the best he has ever sent overseas for what is the U.K.'s premier race meeting.

“I have never been as strong as this,” he said.

The surprise is that Ward's group of 2-year-olds, usually his strong suit, is not deep. He only has two, 'TDN Rising Star' Love Reigns (Ire) (US Navy Flag) and No Nay Hudson (Ire) (No Nay Never), that are definitely headed there.

“In years past at Belmont, they always ran those early maiden 2-year-old races on the turf,” he said. “They always went. If I won one of those races, I'd send those horses over there. This year, it's unfortunate that, for whatever reason, none of those races went. A lot of people are giving me turf sprinters. They're not the same horses on dirt and I'm reluctant to start them on the dirt. I've been waiting for grass races. There have only been two 2-year-old races run on grass in North America so far this year, both at Keeneland. People are buying horses for me to try to get them to Royal Ascot, but you can't go if you don't get them a start beforehand.”

Ward is hoping to find turf maidens for some of his 2-year-olds within the next 10 days or so and said that could lead to additions to his team.

Here's a look at who Ward plans on sending to Royal Ascot:

Golden Pal (Uncle Mo): Ward has said that this is the best horse he has ever trained and Golden Pal has the record to back that up. He is six-for-nine lifetime and has won the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. He is expected to be the favourite in the G1 King's Stand S. on Tuesday, June 14.

“This is a big one for him,” Ward said. “He was second there as a 2-year-old in the [G2] Norfolk [S.] and was unlucky to be beaten. I am going back this year and he has never been better in his life. He is my most likely winner.”

Love Reigns: The 2-year-old filly is scheduled to run in the G2 Queen Mary S. on Wednesday, June 15. She broke her maiden on Apr. 29 at Keeneland, winning a 5 1/2-furlong grass race by 9 3/4 lengths.

No Nay Hudson; The 2-year-old colt will run in the Windsor Castle S. also on June 15. He won a 4 1/2-furlong dirt maiden at Keeneland by four lengths.

Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}): Is a new addition to the Ward barn after being campaigned in the U.K. by trainer Alan King. The 3-year-old has not started since Sept. 25. His biggest win came in the G2 Richmond S. He will go in the June 17 G1 Commonwealth Cup.

“It took a little while to get him going and figure him out,” Ward said. “He wasn't working very well when we first started breezing him. He started doing better, but not as good as you'd expect from what his form showed. These last couple of workouts were great. Really, really good. He outworked a really good horse of mine, Outadore, and did it very nicely. I am looking for him to run a good race.”

'TDN Rising Star' Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}): The now 3-year-old warmed up for Ascot with a win in the Apr. 15 Limestone S. at Keeneland. She is slated to take on males in the June 17 Palace of Holyroodhouse S. at five furlongs. She finished seventh last year at Ascot in the Windsor Castle S.

Her World (Ire) (Caravaggio): Another filly, she will also run in the Palace of Holyroodhouse S, but has had only two career starts, including a third-place finish in the Limestone.

Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}): The filly will be seeking her third win at Royal Ascot when she starts in the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. on Saturday, June 18. She won the G1 Commonwealth Cup there last year and the G2 Queen Mary S. the year before. She also captured the Giant's Causeway S. at Keeneland in her Royal Ascot prep.

“She ran a big race here at Keeneland in her comeback,” Ward said. “She thrives here at Keeneland and every work has been great. I look forward to a big run from her. But this will be her toughest assignment over there yet because she'll be taking on older horses. She's a big powerful mare. She's strong and imposing. I think she will run a big race.”
