EU Commission Lifts 30-Day Foal Restrictions

As part of its newly enacted Animal Health Law, the EU Commission will not apply restrictions on traveling foals under 30 days old through the UK and continental Europe. The European Federation of Thoroughbred Breeders' Associations worked with the likes of Louis Romanet, Dr. Paul Gadot and Brian Kavanagh to form a task force to lobby for the removal of the restrictions, in which Dr. Des Leadon was also instrumental.

EFTBA chairman Joe Hernon paid tribute to the work of the task force led by Goran Akerstrom, FEI Veterinary Director, saying, “This is an example how EFTBA, guardian of the Thoroughbred, can work and represent the many European breeding associations who fund the federation as it continues to address and negotiate on matters of great concern, including post Brexit and Animal Health Law issues.”

Great British Bonus Awards ÂŁ2-Million

In less than a year since its inception, the Great British Bonus has reached a milestone by paying out ÂŁ2-million in bonuses. In all, 112 horses have taken home 134 prizes.

GBB Operations Executive Charlotte Newton said, “GBB just isn't a one-time windfall; fillies can win cumulative bonuses and they do. Just yesterday, Martello Sky won her fourth GB Bonus for trainer Lucy Wadham. We have had a flat filly, Blackberry, who has won three times, securing ÂŁ60,000 in payments and two jumps fillies, Anythingforlove and Marada, who followed her lead in becoming triple GBB bonus winners, and there are 13 other fillies who have all won twice.

“To hit the ÂŁ2 million mark in less than a year is fantastic news for everyone involved in racing and breeding. The feedback from owners, trainers and breeders when they win makes you appreciate just how important the scheme is. It's influencing decisions on whether people continue to race horses as well as if–and how–they're going to breed them, and emphasises the buy and race British message.”

Greenlands Goal For Glen Shiel

Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who claimed a first Group 1 win at age six last season when upsetting the G1 British Champions Sprint S. at 16-1, could make his seasonal debut in the G3 Greenlands S. at The Curragh on May 22. The Archie Watson-trained gelding also has an option in the G2 Duke Of York S. at York on May 12.

Cosmo Charlton, Head Racing Manager for owner Hambleton Racing, said, “Glen Shiel is in fantastic form. Everyone is very happy with him. He's stepped up into faster work now, and Archie is really pleased.

“We're weighing up possible starting point options, but it might be the Greenlands S. over in Ireland, a Group 2 at the end of May. The Duke of York is still under consideration as well, but I think the likelihood is he'll go to the Greenlands and then on to Royal Ascot for the [G1] Diamond Jubilee.”

Glen Shiel was bred by Darley and ran his first three seasons for Andre Fabre, winning the Listed Prix Le Fabuleux at three. He joined the Archie Watson yard after being bought for ÂŁ45,000 at the Goffs UK Spring Horses-In-Training Sale in 2019. Glen Shiel won twice over the Newcastle all-weather last summer before venturing to Ireland to take the G3 Phoenix Sprint S., and after checking in second in the G1 Sprint Cup S. he hit a career high at Ascot last October under Hollie Doyle.

Racing NSW Freezes Phoenix Prizemoney

Action has been taken in Australia against Phoenix Thoroughbreds for the first time since the organization's founder Amer Abdulaziz was accused of money laundering in the U.S. in November of 2019, with Racing New South Wales Chief Steward Marc Van Gestel telling ANZ Bloodstock News that it will freeze all prizemoney won by Phoenix horses until the “matter has been resolved in the U.S., or until such time that it's been resolved to our satisfaction.”

Abdulaziz was named in a U.S. federal court trial in November 2019 as allegedly being involved in a money laundering operation and as having stolen €100-million from OneCoin, a sham cryptocurrency he purportedly helped to run. Abdulaziz and Phoenix Thoroughbreds have denied the allegations.

Phoenix announced in August of 2020 that it would no longer race horses on the UK, and the following month was formally banned by the British Horseracing Authority. France Galop reportedly also placed a ban on Phoenix horses last August, though a formal announcement was never made. Around the same time, Australia's Racing NSW, Racing Victoria and Racing Queensland announced investigations were underway, with Racing NSW the first to take action. Phoenix Thoroughbreds is not banned from racing horses in NSW, but for now cannot collect prizemoney.

“Our decision to freeze prizemoney is on the basis that there is an allegation against them, and in those circumstances, until such time that it is resolved, the prudent course of action is to freeze prizemoney until it's resolved,” Van Gestel said. “Everyone is entitled to procedural fairness. We conducted an investigation on the matter, it doesn't happen in five minutes, it's something we've got to be diligent about, and once we had completed that, when we were in a position with the evidence that we had before us, we've made the decision to freeze prizemoney.”

Phoenix has enjoyed racecourse success in Australia with Group 1 winners like Loving Gaby (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) and Farnan (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}), the latter of which it also bred. Phoenix purchased three seven-figure colts by Not A Single Doubt in partnership with Tony Fung at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
