Broome Gets It Done In The Alleged

While he had to work to land odds of 1-2 in Saturday's G3 Holden Plant Rentals Alleged S. at The Curragh, Coolmore and Masaaki Matsushima's Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) managed to collect and maintain his perfect sequence in 2021. Authoritative when taking the Listed Devoy S. over this 10-furlong trip on contrasting soft ground at Naas Mar. 28, the 2019 G3 Ballysax S. and G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. winner who was also a close fourth in that year's G1 Epsom Derby is back on an even keel this term and was providing Aidan O'Brien with a third renewal in the last four runnings of a race which is becoming increasingly important to the operation. Settled fifth early, the bay was three lengths off the pace and looking in possible trouble two out but after hitting that flat spot stayed on to collar Thundering Nights (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) near the line for a half-length success. Ryan Moore, who was completing the third part of a four-timer for the stable on the afternoon, said, “I think he did very well to win today, as it was just a little bit messy early on and I had to wait a bit. The way the ground is today and with the wind, it is hard to make up ground but he showed a great attitude. He was a very good 3-year-old and he's in a better place now–he's done nothing wrong this year.”

O'Brien is looking at a possible step back up in trip with the winner and said, “He's a lovely horse and will probably love going back up to a mile and a half. It was nice that he didn't have to make the running and Ryan was very happy with him. We can have a look at races like the [G1] Coronation Cup [at Epsom June 4] and the [G1] Tattersalls [Gold Cup at this venue May 23]. Ryan felt the pace was nice early and then dropped in the middle of the race. He had to work a bit harder than if the pace was consistent over a mile and a quarter. He's brave.”

 Pedigree Notes

Broome's dam is the Listed National S.-winning and G3 Princess Margaret S. and GIII Appalachian S.-placed Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose dam Dust Flicker (GB) (Suave Dancer) is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB). The latter is in turn the second dam of this stable's G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), the G2 Futurity S. winner and G1 Irish Derby runner-up Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) who shares Acclamation as a sire with Sweepstake. Dust Flicker is also kin to the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), who herself produced the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) with the latter responsible for Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) who took the GIII Hillsborough S. and was runner-up in G1 Nassau S.

Cassydora's three black-type winners include the multiple group winner Ernest Hemingway (Ire) by Australia's sire Galileo (Ire) and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Toulifaut (Ire) by Rostropovich's sire Frankel, while the family also features last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). Sweepstake also has the once-raced 3-year-old filly by Frankel named Malathaat (Ire), an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old full-brother to Broome and a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire).

Gimmethegreenlight Leads National Yearling Sale

The two-day Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale drew to a close on Friday with trade at a satisfactory level despite the ongoing pandemic and political anxieties in the country. The aggregate of R102,470,000 (€5,974,884/£5,175,174) was up from R87,065,000 (€5,075,345/£4,397,155) in 2020, and while the average dipped 6% to R276,946 (€16,144/£13,986), the median was up to R200,000 (€11,658/£10,100) from R160,000 (€9,327/£8,080).

Young More Than Ready sire Gimmethegreenlight (Aus), currently the leading sire in South Africa, was the sale's leading sire by aggregate and supplied three yearlings who made in excess of R1,000,000 (€58,308/£50,504), including a colt out of triple Group 1 winner All Is Secret (SAf) (lot 351) who topped the sale on day two at R2,800,000 (€163,264/£141,412) when bought by Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock. All Is Secret, South Africa's champion 2-year-old filly of 2012, is also the dam of the listed-winning Sovereign Secret (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}). Gimmethegreenlight also supplied a seven-figure filly on the day in the form of Varsfontein Stud's lot 232, who was also bought by Malherbe. She is the first foal out of the listed-placed Scandola (SAf) (Fort Wood).

Also featuring on Friday was a colt by Twice Over (GB) who fetched R1,400,000 (€81,611/£70,706) from John Freeman. Lot 407, the son of Group 3 winner Cash Register (SAf) (Casey Tibbs {Ire}), is a half-brother to three stakes winners as well as the Group 1-placed Chat Ching (Saf) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}).

Victoria Also Freezes Phoenix Prizemoney

Following on from Friday's news that Racing NSW would place a freeze on prizemoney won by Phoenix Thoroughbreds horses until money laundering allegations are resolved in the U.S., Racing Victoria has followed suit.

Phoenix Founder Amer Abdulaziz was named in a U.S. federal court trial in November 2019 as allegedly being involved in a money laundering operation and as having stolen €100-million from OneCoin, a sham cryptocurrency he purportedly helped to run. Abdulaziz and Phoenix Thoroughbreds have denied the allegations.

A spokesperson for Racing Victoria told TDN AusNZ, “While these legal proceedings remain ongoing, RV has decided to place a freeze on Phoenix Thoroughbreds' portion of prizemoney earned by horses they own or part-own. Should any information come to light via these legal proceedings or other means that warrant further action being taken within our jurisdiction, then we will consider it at the time.”

Phoenix, which was leading buyer at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in partnership with Tony Fung of Aquis with A$11.65-million spent, has been banned from racing in the UK, and reportedly in France. No action has yet been taken in the U.S.

Menuisier Focused On Arc With Wonderful Tonight

Christopher Wright's dual Group 1-winning mare Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) is likely to have a later start to her 4-year-old campaign, with all roads leading to the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, according to trainer David Menuisier.

Wonderful Tonight won the G3 Prix Minerve last summer before scoring at the top level for the first time in the G1 Prix de Royallieu over 14 furlongs. Rather than supplementing for the Arc, connections opted to take in the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. over the same mile and a half trip, which she won by 2 1/2 lengths.

“She's back in training, she's been back in about four or five weeks now, but we are just going to take our time with her,” Menuisier said. “She's not the kind of filly you can stop and start with. The classic French way to prepare for the Arc is to have a spring campaign, then a summer break and come back for the autumn, but once you get going with her, she really doesn't understand the summer break. The idea would be to have four or five races in consecutive months leading up to the Arc, so we don't want to run too early and because of that, I don't really have any strong plans.”

Menuisier said he will be hoping for plenty of rain wherever Wonderful Tonight does run.

“She's entered in the [G2] Middleton at York next month and the [G1] Coronation Cup, but I don't think Epsom would really be her favourite option unless the ground came up very soft. She's usually a bit keen and even on good ground, I could see her doing too much down the hill there and not finishing her race.

“Anything quicker than good wouldn't really rock my boat for her. I wouldn't want her to have too many hard races on the way to October, although obviously as a dual Group 1 winner you are always going to be up against good horses, wherever you run. She will probably be entered in races like the [G1] King George [VI and Queen Elizabeth S.] and then we'll just be hoping for a rotten summer. Even if the weather doesn't favour us, we know we'll have to run her somewhere to get her ready.

“There's also options in France–the [G2] Grand Prix de Chantilly at the Jockey Club meeting would be one and the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is another. She owes us nothing though and we will respect her.”
