Malathaat Finds Winner’s Circle Again In Alabama At Saratoga

In a race steeped in history, with names like Songbird, Shuvee, and Go for Wand on its list of winners, Malathaat sought to return to a familiar spot: the winner's circle. In her last start, she had battled Maracuja down the stretch of the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 21, Maracuja's final kick putting the Kentucky Oaks winner in an unfamiliar position: second place by a head. Four weeks later, Malathaat found the familiar confines of winner's circle once again, getting the better of six other 3-year-olds fillies in the 1 1/4-mile Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Malathaat broke from the sixth post, Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez taking up position behind the front four early in the Alabama. Longshot Played Hard, trying stakes company for the first time, held the lead for the first six furlongs, setting a slow pace with the first quarter-mile in :23.97 and the half-mile in :49.12. She maintained her half-length advantage through the final turn, with Army Wife and Malathaat moving on her outside. Army Wife was fastest into the stretch, grabbing a short lead but Velazquez had Malathaat on the move, taking advantage of the longer distance of the Alabama. She overtook Army Wife and pulled away in the last eighth of a mile to win by a length and a half. Clairiere, who was last early, came on to finish second with Army Wife holding on to third. Will's Secret, Played Hard, Crazy Beautiful, and Maracuja rounded out the order of finish.

The final time for the mile and a quarter G1 Alabama was 2:02.59. Find this race's chart here.

Owned by Shadwell Stables, Malathaat paid $3.10, $2.50, and $2.10. Clairiere paid $5.30 and $3.60. Army Wife paid $3.90.

“With the exception of the stumble at the start, I felt pretty good the whole way. She recovered and got into a good position. She was in the clear. The thing we wanted today was to allow her to run her race and get into that big stride she has and a comfortable rhythm and keep coming,” trainer Todd Pletcher said after the race. “She got back close enough [after the stumble], maybe it would have improved one position or so, but ultimately it was where we wanted her to be.”

“I was thinking that Irad's horse [Ortiz, Jr., aboard No. 3 Clairiere] was coming from way back and I was expecting that. She was not close to the pace, so in the back of my head, I was thinking that's a horse who can come back, so you have to watch out for it,” Velazquez told the NYRA Press Office after the Alabama. “Last time, there was no speed at all. So, we made a decision to go to the first turn and if she was on the lead, then she was on the lead. She was on the lead and everybody chased us. Today, it was easier. The speed showed up. I saved the ground in the first turn. I didn't chase. I knew I was comfortable where I was and she did it for me.”

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, the 3-year-old Malathaat is by Curlin out of the A.P. Indy mare Dreaming of Julia. Consigned by Denali Stud, the filly was purchased by Shadwell at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $1,050,000 by Shadwell. With her win in the G1 Alabama, Malathaat has six wins in seven starts for career earnings of $1,555,150.

Malathaat Back To Magnificent Best in Alabama

A slight bobble at the break of Saturday's GI Alabama S. at Saratoga may have cost 'TDN Rising Star' Malathaat (Curlin) some early position and consigned her to a four- and five-wide trip. But the good ones rise to the occasion when the chips are down and the daughter of fellow 'Rising Star' Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy) called on her considerable class and edged clear late to lead home a 1-2 not only for her superstar sire, but also for breeder Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Farm. Clairiere closed strongly from the back of the field to outfinish Army Wife (Declaration of War) to complete the exacta.

Off to that studder-step beginning from gate six in the field of seven, Malathaat was allowed to find her footing by John Velazquez and raced with only 'Rising Star' Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) behind her as the Alabama field raced under the line for the first time.

On the business end, longshot Played Hard (Into Mischief) cut out the early fractions in advance of Army Wife, as Velazquez settled the odds-on choice on the flank of her GI CCA Oaks conqueror Maracuja (Honor Code), having improved a spot turning down the backstretch.

Played Hard remained in control after six furlongs in 1:13.27, a demanding-enough split over a strip downgraded to good following mid-afternoon rains, and Malathaat was asked to take closer order around the turn. Forced to cover a stack of ground, the Shadwell colorbearer nevertheless loomed a threat outside of the rallying Army Wife in upper stretch, fought her way past that foe with an eighth of a mile to race and proved a shade too classy in the finish. Clairiere followed the eventual winner's move into the lane and attacked the line for second. Malathaat traveled 41 feet (about 4 1/4 lengths) farther than Clairiere and 20 feet more (just over two lengths) more than Army Wife.

Named a 'Rising Star' off a fast-finishing maiden win over seven furlongs at Belmont Oct. 9, Malathaat wired the field in the Nov. 6 Tempted S. by nearly eight lengths and employed off-pace tactics to take the GII Demoiselle S. by 3/4 of a length Dec. 5. A $1.05-million Keeneland September purchase by the late Sheikh Hamdan's operation, Malathaat was on a trajectory to make her seasonal return in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks Mar. 27–a race won by Crazy Beautiful–but the passing of Sheikh Hamdan a few days prior led to a start in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland the following weekend instead. Overcoming a similarly wide passage to just best Pass the Champagne (Flatter), she battled for every yard to just hold off next-out GI Acorn S. winner Search Results (Flatter) in the GI Kentucky Oaks Apr. 30 and just failed to last in the CCA Oaks after being pestered on the front end for the entirety of that nine-furlong trip.

“It was key [having a target],” admitted trainer Todd Pletcher, winning the Alabama for the third time. “Last time, it was difficult to figure out the right tactics and we kind of got tag teamed, as you'd expect to be in a prohibitive-favorite situation. Today, we drew a better post and we were able to let her find her rhythm and she showed why she's the best 3-year-old filly in the country.”

Pedigree Notes:

Malathaat is the second foal from her dam, the 2012 GI Frizette S. winner who romped by 21 3/4 lengths in the Gulfstream Oaks, but could do no better than fourth to upset-minded stablemate Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) in the Kentucky Oaks.

Second dam Dream Rush won the GI Darley Test S. in 2007 and was subsequently sold to Halsey Minor for $3.3 million at that year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale. She remained in training into early 2009, but was retired and covered by A.P. Indy for her first cover. Dreaming of Julia was foaled Mar. 3, 2010, and Dream Rush would go on to produce SW 'TDN Rising Star' Atreides (Medaglia d'Oro) and MGSW 'Rising Star' Dream Pauline (Tapit), whose first produce is a Curlin colt foaled Feb. 4 of this year.

Malathaat is one of any number of top-class runners bred on the Curlin–A.P. Indy cross, which includes Grade I winners Stellar Wind, Global Campaign, Paris Lights and Idol. Additionally, Classic winner Exaggerator was bred from a mare by Seattle Slew's son Vindication, while Mother Goose S. heroine Off the Tracks is a maternal granddaughter of Slew's son Capote.

Dreaming of Julia is the dam of a yearling full-sister to Malathaat and a Medaglia d'Oro filly foaled Mar. 30. She was most recently bred back to Curlin.

Into Mischief Colt Romps in ‘Rising Star’ Performance at the Spa

My Prankster (c, 2, Into Mischief–My Wandy's Girl, Flower Alley) put on a show for trainer Todd Pletcher on the GI Alabama S. undercard at Saratoga Saturday afternoon, easily good enough for 'TDN Rising Star' honors.

My Prankster tipped his hand with a four-furlong gate move in :47 (2/114) two back at Saratoga Aug. 8 and was off at odds of 7-2 in this loaded field. He was ridden from his inside draw by Luis Saez and chased early from third. Guided to the outside, he ranged up three wide heading into the far turn, took control leaving the quarter pole, and, after switching over to his right lead in the stretch, leveled off in jaw-dropping fashion en route to a 10-length score. Seal Beach (Midshipman) was second.

My Prankster, a $600,000 FTKSEL yearling purchase by Robert E. and Lawana L. Low, becomes the 25th of his sire's offspring to be accorded 'Rising Star' status. My Wandy's Girl, a Puerto Rican champion, 15-time winner and heroine of the 2014 Barbara Fritchie H., brought $700,000 from Stonestreet at the 2014 KEENOV sale. She is also responsible for a Curlin colt of 2020. She was bred to Tapit for 2022.

Pletcher and the Lows also campaign MGISW Colonel Liam (Liam's Map).

Essential Quality Leads Runhappy Travers Breezers

It was a busy morning at Saratoga for 3-year-olds headed towards next Saturday's $1.25-million GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga, headed by GI Belmont S. hero and reigning champion juvenile Essential Quality (Tapit).

The 'TDN Rising Star,' ridden by leading jockey Luis Saez, worked outside of stablemate Bonny South (Munnings) and the duo covered five furlongs in 1:01.58 (10/18). The Godolphin homebred was caught in fractions of :11.40, :23.22 and :47.81 before galloping out three-quarters of a mile in 1:15 flat. Juddmonte's enigmatic Bonny South is also scheduled to race on Travers Day as she is expected for the GI Personal Ensign S.

“He seems to be a little more forward leading up to this race than he was in the Jim Dandy,” said trainer Brad Cox. “We've tried to sharpen him up the last few weeks and I feel like we have mentally. He's ready to go. Luis was super excited with how he worked. His last two works were better than his first two leading up to the Jim Dandy, so I feel like we have a horse who is every bit as good as we were leading into the Jim Dandy; maybe even better.”

The progressive Masqueparade (Upstart), a last-out third to Essential Quality in the July 31 GII Jim Dandy S., breezed a half-mile in :48.11 (16/41) under the watchful eye of trainer Al Stall, Jr., who believes there is improvement to come for the GIII Ohio Derby victor.

“With the shipping, I only worked him twice from the Ohio Derby to the Jim Dandy,” Stall, Jr. said. “When we got up here we noticed the track was a little deeper than it was in the past or at least it seemed that way. I think he got a little bit out of that race and it should help him for this race.”

Keepmeinmind (Laoban), who did everything short of win the Jim Dandy after being outbattled to the wire by the champ, tuned up for the Travers with a half-mile breeze of his own in :47.55 (7/41).

“He went very good,” said trainer Robertino Diodoro. “He was doing it nice and easy all on h is own and with a strong gallop out once again. Touch wood, everything is on schedule. This was easy as could be and I thought Dennis did a good job because he's not an easy horse to slow down.”

Trainer Ken McPeek, who sent out Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) to work five furlongs in 1:00 flat at Oklahoma (2/38) for the Personal Ensign, also oversaw the final pre-Travers hit-out for GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. winner King Fury (Curlin), who worked five-eighths of a mile on his own in 1:01.13 (17/38) over the same surface. Runner-up to Masqueparade and a nose better than Keepmeinmind in the Ohio Derby, the son of the late former 'TDN Rising Star' Taris (Flatter) was a latest 10th in the GI Saratoga Derby Invitational on the turf Aug. 7.

“It was a solid breeze. We caught him in a minute,” McPeek said. “It was a nice solid maintenance breeze. The horse can run all day. He's coming into the race great. I think a mile and a quarter will be right up his alley. If he jumps to another level, I think we're good. The turf race was probably a bad idea in hindsight.”

Dynamic One (Union Rags) and Miles D (Curlin), the respective one-two finishers in the July 30 Curlin S., also got in their final major work Saturday. With Irad Ortiz, Jr. up, Dynamic One covered four furlongs in :50.67 (115/144) over the training track, while Miles D, who will try to give Chad Brown a maiden Travers success, stopped the clock in 1:01.16 (19/38) for five panels, also over the Oklahoma surface.

Life Is Good On Edge For Jerkens…

'TDN Rising Star' Life Is Good (Into Mischief), unraced since an eight-length romp in the GII San Felipe S. in early March, drilled five furlongs in 1:00.61 (10/38) as he readies for his comeback test in next Saturday's GI H. Allen Jerkens S. at the Spa.

Now under the care of Todd Pletcher, the $525,000 Keeneland September yearling was completing his fifth breeze at Saratoga since being transferred from trainer Bob Baffert.

“Another very impressive breeze with a tremendous gallop out,” Pletcher said. “He seems to do things effortlessly. He's impressive to watch and it should have him ready to go in what is a demanding task going seven-eighths in a Grade 1 off a layoff. He seems to be training extremely well.

“I would argue that today was his best work of all, particularly the gallop out,” Pletcher continued. “I had him out the mile in 1:39 and one under a motionless rider. He has a good foundation of fitness.”

Mike Smith, aboard in each of Life Is Good's three previous starts, will be in from California for the ride.

Letruska Signals Readiness for Personal Ensign…

Pro-tem divisional leader Letruska (Super Saver) went five furlongs in a bullet :59.02 (1/18) over the Saratoga main track Saturday morning as she looks for her sixth win in her last seven starts in the GI Personal Ensign S. next weekend.

With Ortiz, Jr. in the saddle, the 5-year-old clicked off fractions of :12, :23.20 and :35.20 before pulling up six furlongs in 1:12 flat.

“Normally, she is a horse who likes to work fast and she worked well today,” said trainer Fausto Gutierrez. “The idea was to feel full of horse and she's a horse that is ready to run.”

Letruska, who celebrated her true coming-out party when winning the GIII Shuvee S. at Saratoga nearly a year ago, accounted for the aforementioned Bonny South by 2 3/4 lengths in the GI Ogden Phipps S. at Belmont June 5 and exits a 5 3/4-length thrashing of her rivals in the GII Fleur de Lis S. at Churchill June 26.
