‘Rising Stars’ Set To Do Battle in Soaring Softly

Arguably the most interesting graded event being held this weekend not named the Preakness, Saturday's seven-furlong GIII Soaring Softly S. has attracted an evenly matched group of 11 sophomore fillies headed by a pair of 'TDN Rising Stars.'

Tobys Heart (Jack Milton) got the 'Rising Star' nod off a spectacular debut over 5 1/2 furlongs of the Matt Winn turf course at Churchill just shy of a year ago, overcoming a slow break to score by the better part of seven lengths. An easy winner of Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. in August, she was forced to miss the Breeders' Cup via injury and was sixth trying two turns for the first time in the Feb. 27 GIII Hercomesthebride S. at Gulfstream. The dark bay was back to her best in her latest, a rallying, half-length success in the TVG Limestone Turf Sprint S. at Keeneland Apr. 9, for which she earned a career-best 88 Beyer Speed Figure. Saturday's trip should hit her right between the eyes.

Star Devine (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) has the right to excel over further, but takes this next logical step off a 'Rising Star' debut at Aqueduct Apr. 8 in which she spotted her rivals a handful of lengths at the break, but sprinted hard in the final furlong and a half to win going away.

Contrarians could easily land on Hit The Woah (Vancouver {Aus}). The daughter of a precocious G1 Golden Slipper winner, the bay broke her maiden at second asking in a rained-off event at Aqueduct last November, defeating no fewer than five next-out winners in the process. Fourth at odds-on in the Jan. 2 Glitter Woman S. over the Gulfstream main track, the $150,000 KEESEP purchase came with a late run to be third, beaten a half-length, in the one-mile Sanibel Island S. in Hallandale Mar. 27. The slight cutback in trip could be to her advantage.

Invincible Gal (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) broke her maiden on debut over a turf sprint trip last August and makes her first appearance since finishing second in the Tepin S. over a mile and a sixteenth at the Big A in late November.

Unbeaten Rising Star Returns in Herecomesthebride

Undefeated Tobys Heart (Jack Milton) returns to the races Saturday after six months on the sidelines in Gulfstream's GIII Herecomesthebride S. Tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' off a 6 3/4-length romp in her Churchill unveiling June 4, the dark bay rallied to victory in the Bolton Landing S. going 5 1/2 panels at Saratoga Aug. 19. The $45,000 OBSMAR buy navigates two turns for the first time in this return from the bench.

Spanish Loveaffair (Karakontie {Jpn}) opened her account last season with a pair of victories going a mile over this course, in her July 23 debut and the Sharp Susan S. Aug. 29. Second behind undefeated 'Rising Star' Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in Keeneland's GII Jessamine S. Oct. 7, the bay finished sixth behind that rival in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf S. in Lexington Nov. 6.

Con Lima (Commissioner) has never been worse than second in her career and has made six of her seven starts at this venue. Wiring a one-mile optional claimer here by 5 1/4 lengths Dec. 12, the dark bay scored another decisive victory in the Ginger Brew S. Jan. 2. Setting the early pace last time in the GIII Sweetest Chant S. Jan. 30, she was overtaken late and forced to settle for second.

Unbeaten Tobys Heart to Stretch Out Versus Graded Company in Return

Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Tobys Heart (Jack Milton) is aiming for a return to action in either the GIII Herecomesthebride S. at Gulfstream Park Feb. 27 or the GIII Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs Mar. 6. Both races are contested on grass at 1 1/16 miles.

Co-owned by Terry Hamilton and trainer Brian Lynch, the 3-year-old filly was impressive in a pair of efforts sprinting on the lawn last term.

After kicking off her career with a 'Rising Star' performance beneath the Twin Spires June 4–following a slow start, she unleashed an explosive run to graduate by 6 3/4 lengths–Tobys Heart followed up with a good-looking, come-from-behind score in a loaded renewal of Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. most recently Aug. 19 (video).

The second through sixth-place finishers in the Bolton Landing–Joy's Rocket (Anthony Cross) (second), Amanzi Yimpilo (Ire) (No Nay Never) (third), Mischievous Dream (Into Mischief) (fourth), Quinoa Tifah (Gemologist) (fifth) and Sweet Souper Sweet (First Samurai) (sixth)-have all added stakes victories since.

“She had two tiny chips removed from the front of her P1 on both ankles,” Lynch said. “We cleaned them up and gave her a little bit of time and I think it's been a blessing. She seems like she's blossomed–bigger, stronger filly. It gives you something to look forward to.”

Tobys Heart has posted eight workouts at Lynch's Palm Meadows base since mid-December, including a five-furlong spin in 1:03.45 (12/26) on grass Friday.

“She hasn't missed a beat since we put her back into training,” Lynch said. “We're looking to stretch her out and look forward to seeing what she shows us when we try her around two turns. She's doing everything right, so fingers crossed.”

Tobys Heart, a $5,500 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling, brought $45,000 from Alistair Roden Bloodstock on behalf of Hamilton and Lynch after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at OBS March.

Bred in Kentucky by Trackside Farms, Tobys Heart is from the second crop of young Crestwood Farm stallion Jack Milton. She is out of the stakes-winning Lil's Lad mare Pick of the Pack, a half-sister to GSW Great Attack (Greatness).

Lynch and his aforementioned longtime client also campaign recent GIII John B. Connally Turf Cup S. winner Spooky Channel (English Channel). The duo, of course, also teamed up on popular GISW Heart to Heart (English Channel).

Tobys Heart Becomes First Stakes Winner for Jack Milton in Bolton Landing

Tobys Heart justified the ‘TDN Rising Star’ moniker she earned in her debut with a victory in Saratoga’s Bolton Landing S., becoming the first black-type winner for her second-crop sire (by War Front). Overcoming a troubled trip to graduate by 6 3/4 lengths in her Churchill Downs unveiling June 4, she was heavily favored at 1-2 for this step up in class. Running off the fence, the bay bided her time back in sixth as Joy’s Rocket zipped through a :22.21 zipped through an opening quarter. Swinging out four wide turning for home, Tobys Heart charged up to confront Joys Rocket in the lane and the two separated themselves from the rest of the pack. However, Joys Rocket proved no match for Tobys Heart who rolled clear to victory.

The winner’s stakes-winning dam Pick of the Pack is a daughter of GSW Cat Attack (Storm Cat) and a half-sister to GSW Great Attack (Greatness). The 19-year-old mare produce a Comissioner colt in 2019 and a Commissioner filly Apr. 15 of this year. She was bred back to Astern (Aus).
