Belmont Winner Tiz The Law ‘Getting A Little Bit Tough’ In Morning Workouts

In his first breeze since winning the Belmont Stakes on June 20, Sackatoga Stable's Tiz the Law worked four furlongs in 50.06 seconds.

According to the Daily Racing Form, jockey Manny Franco kept Tiz the Law steady through the first quarter mile in 26.71 seconds, then moved up to complete the second quarter in 23.18 seconds. In order to go slow early, trainer Barclay Tagg ponied the 3-year-old Constitution colt all the way to the five-eighths pole.

“That was (Tagg's) plan and that was great for me because he's getting a little bit tough,” Franco told the Daily Racing Form. “That made it easier for me.”

Up next, Tiz the Law is expected to take on the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 8, en route to the rescheduled Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5.

With Dominant Performance, Midnight Bisou Retains Her Crown In NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll

Champion Midnight Bisou further stamped her divisional superiority when she cruised to victory in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 27, a performance that allowed the daughter of Midnight Lute to continue her reign in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Top Thoroughbred Poll.

In her first start since running second in the $20 million Saudi Cup on February 29, Midnight Bisou scored an 8 ¼-length triumph in the Fleur de Lis over a field that included 2019 Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress. That victory earned the 2019 Eclipse Award heroine for champion older dirt female 25 first-place votes and 390 points this week to retain the top spot in the poll, a position she has held since March 10.

“I can't say enough how thankful we are to (owners) Jeff Bloom, Sol Kumin and the Allens for keeping this brilliant mare in training for this year,” Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, who conditions Midnight Bisou, told the Churchill Downs publicity team.

Midnight Bisou was not alone in uncorking an emphatic performance beneath the Twin Spires this past weekend. G M B Racing's Tom's d'Etat drew off to a 4 ¼-length victory over By My Standards in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes to move up to second in the poll with 9 first-place votes and 347 points. The Stephen Foster marked the fourth consecutive victory for Tom's d'Etat, who earned a fees-paid berth into this year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

Grade 1-winner Mucho Gusto (217 points) holds in third with Code of Honor (4 first-place votes, 206 points) sitting fourth ahead of his expected run in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on July 4. By My Standards (180 points) drops to fifth followed by leading 3-year-old male Tiz the Law (3 first-place votes, 123 points) and Zulu Alpha (119 points). Vekoma (116 points), Maximum Security (3 first-place votes, 90 points), and Improbable (85) round out the top 10.

As evidenced by his status as the lone sophomore runner ranked in the top 10 of the Thoroughbred Poll, Tiz the Law remains the clear leader of the NTRA Top Three-Year-Old Poll.

The Belmont Stakes winner earned 40 first-place votes and 409 points to maintain his lead position. Trained by Barclay Tagg, Tiz the Law is expected to make his next start in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes on August 8 at Saratoga Race Course.

Santa Anita Derby winner Honor A. P. (1 first-place vote, 367 points) remains second followed by graded-stakes winner Authentic (276 points) and Belmont Stakes runner-up Dr Post (223).

King Guillermo (200 points) held in fifth with Grade 1 Acorn Stakes winner Gamine (138) in sixth.

Grade 1-winner Charlatan (105 points) is seventh followed by Max Player (97), Swiss Skydiver (71) and Maxfield (66) to complete the top 10.

The NTRA Top Thoroughbred polls are the sport's most comprehensive surveys of experts. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. All horses that have raced in the U.S., are in training in the U.S., or are known to be pointing to a major event in the U.S. are eligible for the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll. Voting in both the Top 3-Year-Old Poll and the Top Thoroughbred Poll is scheduled to be conducted through the conclusion of the Breeders' Cup in November.

Tiz The Law Favored At 2-1 In Latest Kentucky Derby Future Wager

With the rescheduled Kentucky Derby 10 weeks away, Belmont Stakes (Grade I) winner Tiz the Law closed as the 2-1 favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager with Santa Anita Derby (GI) winner Honor A. P. the 6-1 second choice.

The pari-mutuel field of “All Other 3-Year-Old Males” closed as the 8-1 third choice and was followed in the betting by the Bob Baffert-trained duo of Santa Anita Derby runner-up Authentic at 11-1 and impressive seven-length debut winner Uncle Chuck at 13-1. Another horse that attracted attention was unbeaten Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby leader Café Pharoah, who closed at 14-1.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, offered for a 22nd consecutive year, enables bettors to wager on possible Kentucky Derby contenders in advance of America's greatest race at odds that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the race.

On March 17, Churchill Downs Incorporated announced the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI), the 1 1/4-mile classic for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, would be rescheduled from Saturday, May 2, to Saturday, Sept. 5, amid public health concerns in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Total handle for Pool 5 of the KDFW was $337,607 ($219,946 in the Win pool and $117,661 in Exactas).

Dates for the remaining 2020 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future pools are July 17-19 (Pool 6) and Aug. 7-9 (Pool 7). Pool 2 of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will coincide with the Derby's Pool 6 on 17-19.

Belmont Winner Tiz The Law To Stand At Ashford Stud Upon Retirement

Last Saturday's impressive Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner Tiz The Law will stand at Coolmore America's Ashford Stud on his retirement, but will continue to race for owners Sackatoga Stable throughout his racing career.

“Tiz The Law is the outstanding colt of his generation so we are obviously delighted he'll be coming here,” said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan. “From day one when he broke his maiden at Saratoga we have been watching him closely and he has everything one looks for in a stallion prospect. We are grateful to Jack Knowlton and his partners in Sackatoga Stable for letting us be a part of such an exciting horse, and also to Barclay Tagg, Robin Smullen and their team who have done a tremendous job with him. He's a Grade 1-winning juvenile and is now a Classic winner. Combined with his near perfect race record, he's very good-looking and is a very well-bred individual.”

His sire Constitution was second only to American Pharoah on the freshman sire table last year and leads the way in 2020, while Tiz The Law's dam Tizfiz was the winner of seven races including the Grade 2 San Gorgonio Handicap carrying top weight of 118 pounds.

“Tiz The Law is such a pleasure to be around, he impresses me every day with how easy he does everything, nothing is out of reach for him,” said trainer Barclay Tagg. “I have been training horses for such a long time and I have never had a horse like him, he makes my life very easy. We are looking forward to running him in the Travers then on to the Derby and Preakness. He has achieved so much already and is a very exciting horse for the future, I wouldn't change him for the world.”
