New York’s Finest

Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law (Constitution) continued his unconventional path to Louisville in this upside down year with a jaw-dropping, geared-down 5 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s GI Runhappy Travers S. at a spectator-free Saratoga.

‘TDN Rising Star’ Caracaro (Uncle Mo) was second; Max Player (Honor Code) finished third.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve always wanted to win the Travers,” winning trainer Barclay Tagg said. “This has been in my head my whole life. And now it happened so it couldn’t be better. You always have some doubt because many different things can happen. That’s always in the back of you’re a mind, but I was very confident in the horse.”

Sackatoga’s Jack Knowlton added, “It’s just so exciting. To be in the race and to be 1-2, there’s a lot of pressure. We had well-wishers from everywhere. We saw a performance today that just blows me away. We know we had a nice horse. We thought we had the best horse. To do what he did today, we’re looking forward to going to Kentucky now [for the GI Kentucky Derby].”

Knowlton continued, “It’s fabulous. We’re getting redemption 17 years later [Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, ran third in the Belmont S. and did not run in the Travers]. Tiz won the Belmont, now he won the Travers. It’s quite an accomplishment for our little stable of New York-breds, for Barclay Tagg training our New York-bred to win the biggest races in New York. We’re just thrilled to death.”

The last out GI Belmont S. hero left the stalls in good order and was kept in the clear three wide by Manny Franco as Bob Baffert’s highly regarded unbeaten West Coast invader Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo) led them into the clubhouse turn.

Tiz the Law, sent off as the 1-2 favorite in the seven-horse affair, chased on the outside in third through an opening quarter in :23.65 and loomed large in that same position through a :48.36 half mile. The New York-bred turned up the heat on the pacesetter, the 5-2 second choice, under confident handling heading into the far turn and the East vs. West showdown was set. Or so it seemed.

Franco remained motionless as Luis Saez was already all in aboard a tiring Uncle Chuck as they hit the quarter pole with Tiz the Law’s big white blaze now in front. It was only a question of by how far from there as Franco took a peek under his shoulder.

Tiz the Law, winner of Gulfstream’s GIII Holy Bull S. and the GI Curlin Florida Derby in his two other appearances earlier this term, was in complete control as they straightened. Franco briefly shook the reins and a single backhander from there was all it took as he eased down late on the early GI Kentucky Derby favorite in the lane to win for fun.

“He gave me chills,” Franco said of the $110,000 SARAUG yearling graduate. “When I pressed the button, he just took off. He accelerated really hard. After that, I took a peek back and he was going away and I just saved horse.”

Tiz the Law will look to collect the second jewel of this rescheduled COVID-19 Triple Crown on the first Saturday in September.

“I don’t think we’ll change a whole lot,” Tagg said. “We’ll give him 10 days of easiness and then get a few more breezes in him before we go out there. That’s about all we can do.”

Pedigree Notes:

Constitution, the runaway leading second-crop sire of 2020 by earnings and heir-apparent to his sire Tapit, is the sire of Tiz the Law and five other black-type winners, including Alexandria, who won the Best of Ohio Miss Ohio S. also on Saturday, and Laura’s Light, who won the July 25 GII San Clemente S. at Del Mar. Five of Constitution’s six stakes winners are graded and five more of his eight additional stakes horses are graded-placed. Constitution shares stallion duties at WinStar Farm with Horse of the Year Tiznow, who is Tiz the Law’s broodmare sire and is also the damsire of Constitution’s additional stakes horses Our Country (GIII Pilgrim S.) and Kansas Kis (Busher Invitational S.). Winner of the 2009 GII San Gorgonio H. at Santa Anita and full-sister to GSW and GISP Fury Kapcori, Tiz the Law’s dam, Tizfiz, hails from the female family of Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (Phone Trick). She also has 2-year-old filly Angel Oak (Mission Impazible) and a yearling colt by that same sire. Although she was bred to Constitution for 2020, no foal has been reported for Tizfiz this year. Tiz the Law will stand at Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud upon his retirement, it was announced in late June.

‘The Pinnacle Of What We Hope For’: Tiz The Law A ‘Star Pupil’ On And Off The Track

Belmont Stakes hero Tiz the Law, born at Sequel Stallions in Hudson, N.Y., and raised in Versailles, Ky., by breeder Twin Creeks Farm, is the even-money morning-line favorite for Saturday's Grade 1, $1-million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

The two outfits enjoy a strong relationship, with Sequel Stallions serving as home to the Twin Creeks Racing Stables' campaigned stallions Mission Impazible and Destin.

Becky Thomas, owner of Sequel Stallions, said Tiz the Law, a son of Constitution, displayed intelligence and athletic promise from his very first steps.

“We just showed him what we wanted him to do and he listened,” said Thomas. “We try very hard as a farm to be able to breed and raise a good horse and Tiz the Law is the pinnacle of what we hope for.”

Randy Gullatt, who manages Twin Creeks Farm for director Steve Davison, has been associated with Tiz the Law since the colt and his Grade 2-winning dam Tizfiz shipped to Kentucky just 90 days after being foaled.

Tiz the Law excelled at the 230-acre farm before shipping back up to New York for the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred Yearling Sale, and Gullatt said that not much has changed in terms of the horse's demeanor.

“He was very similar to what he is now,” Gullatt said. “Just very easy to manage, very happy, very intelligent and very pleasant to be around.”

Thomas said Tiz the Law exuded class ahead of the sale, where he was purchased for $110,000 by Jack Knowlton of Sackatoga Stables.

“I have found that horses who are smart may go to a place with new surroundings, look around and just process their new environment, but those kinds of horses are the ones that make good racehorses,” said Thomas. “You can go from one place to the next, ship them and move them because they're smart. They want to please you, they stay in their tub, they do the right thing, and they show well at the sale. Tiz the Law was a class act and a star pupil all the way through.

“I wish we could have all babies and yearlings like Tiz the Law,” Thomas added. “They're the kind that the veterinarian doesn't know because nothing is wrong with them. Your help goes to the sale and lead them out because they aren't problematic. He's one of those horses that are always wanting to please, did everything right, and are well-balanced.”

Tiz the Law was a winner at first asking at Saratoga for trainer Barclay Tagg on Aug. 8, 2019, exactly one year removed from Saturday's Travers.

The talented bay has since flourished, winning three Grade 1 races including last year's Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, the Florida Derby in March at Gulfstream Park and most recently, the Belmont Stakes, where on June 20 he became the first New York-bred in 138 years to win the American classic.

Gullatt and Thomas have both identified Tiz the Law's athleticism as his most outstanding attribute.

“I think 'athletic' would be the word I use more commonly than others,” Thomas said. “He's not a big, stretchy horse, he's a medium-sized horse. Tiz the Law, even though he wasn't a big overpowering horse, he had really good length in his back and those horses cover a lot of ground and they have a lot of room to reach up under them when they're moving. In his case, how he runs is how he walked.”

“He was a very athletic horse,” Gullatt concurred. “He had a very good hind leg on him. I think his mind was just so good. He was very easy to please and loved his job. He wasn't an overly big horse, but it was all his athleticism and his mind that were his biggest strengths.”

In a game of ups and downs, Thomas said she takes a strong sense of pride in being associated with the development of a horse of Tiz the Law's caliber.

“We sure kiss a lot of frogs before we get to that prince,” Thomas said. “We work really hard to produce a product that succeeds in the sales ring and on the racetrack. It's important to me to be associated with these types of horses and types of mares. It's everything we work for.”

Gullatt won 89 races as a trainer before switching careers, and he praised Tagg for being able to keep Tiz the Law in top form throughout the year.

“What's amazing to me is that it's very difficult to do well for as long as Barclay has had this horse do well and just stay at that peak level,” Gullatt said. “So, I think it just goes to show the strength of the horse and how well he's fit Barclay's program. It's a match made in heaven.”

Fans of Tiz the Law can look forward to seeing his Twin Creeks Racing-owned 2-year-old half-sister Angel Oak, by Mission Impazible, make her debut this fall for trainer Todd Pletcher.

“She was up at Belmont and was off one day, so we decided to back off and give her a little break,” said Gullatt. “She's currently at WinStar but she's training every day and we hope to have her ready in the fall. There's a New York-sired stakes race in December that we have circled that I would love to make.”

Triple Crown News Minute Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: Who’ll Fight ‘The Law’?

While Saturday's $1-million Runhappy Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., offers qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby (100-40-20-10 to the top four finishers), this Grade 1, mile and a quarter fixture is anything but a “prep.”

Barclay Tagg has made no secret of his desire to win this “Mid-Summer Derby,” and Tiz the Law has not missed a beat for him since winning the G1 Belmont Stakes on June 20 – the opening leg of the Triple Crown in this upside-down year of the coronavirus pandemic.

But to win the Travers, the Constitution colt will have to earn it. Three-time Travers-winning trainer Bob Baffert has shipped unbeaten  Uncle Chuck in from California, and the Uncle Mo colt has drawn comparisons to Arrogate, the 2016 Travers winner for Baffert who set a track record of 1:59.36 winning by 13 1/2 lengths.

Country Grammer and Caracaro, the 1-2 finishers in the G3 Peter Pan at Saratoga on July 16, could also make things difficult for Tiz the Law.

In this edition of the Triple Crown News Minute, Ray Paulick and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth go through the field of eight 3-year-olds to determine whether any of them are capable of fighting 'The Law' and upsetting Tagg's even-money morning line favorite.

Runhappy Travers Returns to FOX Sports

For the second consecutive year, the $1-million GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga will be televised live on the FOX Sports broadcast network as part of a 1 1/2-hour telecast from 5:00-6:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

Post time for the 151st running of the Runhappy Travers, featuring a showdown between GI Belmont S. winner Tiz the Law (Constitution) and the unbeaten Bob Baffert-trained Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo), is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. ET.

An expanded Runhappy Travers Day edition of Saratoga Live, presented by America’s Best Racing, Runhappy and Claiborne Farm, will air nationally on FS1 beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Coverage and analysis of the day’s races then shifts to FS2 beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET and continues throughout the afternoon on FS1/FS2.

The complete Runhappy Travers broadcast can also be viewed live on the TDN homepage at www.thetdn.com.

With this year’s Saratoga summer meet currently closed to spectators, Saturday’s Runhappy Travers Day coverage on Saratoga Live will leverage 32 cameras at various locations throughout the property to capture all the action. The broadcast will also include the introduction of the “WinStar Cam,” which will provide in-race aerial coverage throughout the day.

“This exceeds the amount of cameras that you would see during a major league baseball telecast, college basketball, college football,” Tony Allevato, President of NYRA Bets & Executive Producer for NYRA TV, said on a conference call Thursday afternoon. “We’re excited. We’ve got a good show ahead of us. It’s a unique year across the country and it’s a unique year for horse racing with the Triple Crown being run out of order and the Travers being run in the middle of the Triple Crown. It’s really an unprecedented time, but it’s also made for some great story lines, and hopefully we’ll be able to convey that on the show.”
