Bill Farish Says He’s ‘Bullish’ On Racing’s Future On Writers’ Room

There are few people in racing more qualified to speak on the health of the sport than Lane's End's Bill Farish. In addition to running the historic farm, Farish is chairman of the board of the Breeders' Cup, chairman of the Horse PAC and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Keeneland Association, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Foundation. Wednesday, Farish joined the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland, calling in as the Green Group Guest of the Week to explain why he's “bullish” on racing's future, share his thoughts on the 140-mare cap and much more.

“I'm incredibly bullish on the future of the sport,” he said. “I think we've got a lot of positives. The state of Kentucky needs to get the historic horse racing deal figured out, because that's a huge, huge boost to the industry. If we can keep those purses where they were heading, and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act that was recently passed, I think is hugely important for our future. We've got to get the testing right. We need to have greater integrity and more confidence from the bettors in the product. I think that will go a long way in helping that. I was going to say restoring it, but I'm not sure it's ever been there to the degree it should be. I think that's a huge thing.”

Asked about The Jockey Club's new rule capping stallion books at 140 mares, Farish explained his support for the measure, saying, “First of all, I don't think there is as many people on the side of large books as there are on the side of limiting books. But, to me it's quite obvious, we have literally 50% the number of stallions standing in Kentucky that we did 20 years ago. That's a direct result of increased book size. So, I think looking at the list of mares bred this year, there would be literally, I think the number is about 900 mares, to spread amongst other stallions from the stallions that are being bred over 140.”

Iowa HBPA’s Moss Wants To Stop Recently Signed HISA Law From Being Implemented

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, signed into law on Dec. 27, 2020, has been billed as the impetus for significant changes in the United States horse racing industry. The Iowa Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association executive director Jon Moss isn't sure that's a good thing, according to radioiowa.com.

“This new group that is being formed is unchecked in how much they can charge us as the state of Iowa in order to actually regulate the racing industry within the state,” Moss told radioiowa.com. “There's going to be a reckoning coming — we're going to be in a tough position. We may reach out and request something of your assistance to try and help stop this from being implemented.”

By law, the latest HISA can go into effect is July 1, 2022. The previously formed nominating committee is in the process of selecting the nine members who will comprise the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (five independent members from outside of the horse industry, four from within the industry but without current investments or conflicts of interest). The Authority has been charged with contracting with the United States Anti-Doping Agency to oversee the anti-doping/medication control program on a national basis.

Thoroughbred Incentive Program Announces 2021 Schedule Of Shows, Awards, Youth Ambassadors

The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) announced Tuesday that it has approved more than 7,000 awards and classes at more than 1,500 shows in 42 states, Puerto Rico, and six Canadian provinces in 2021.

Awards are available for multiple disciplines, including eventing, dressage, Western and English pleasure, hunter/jumper, endurance, Western performance, games, and polocrosse. Awards are again available at some events for Thoroughbreds within their first two years of showing or for Thoroughbreds within two years of their last start.

“This year marks the 10^th year in which T.I.P. is offering awards, and we are proud of the success of this initiative in promoting the versatility of the Thoroughbred,” said Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and administrator of T.I.P. “Through 2020, there have been more than 6,500 shows that have offered T.I.P. awards, more than 30,000 T.I.P. numbers that have been assigned, and more than 60,000 award entries submitted for horses. We look forward to adding to these totals in 2021 and continuing to demonstrate to the equestrian community the talents of Thoroughbreds in a range of disciplines.”

In addition, T.I.P. will be offering year-end or championship awards in association with the American Endurance Ride Conference; Equine Trail Sports; United States Eventing Association; United States Pony Club; and United States Dressage Federation. Furthermore, T.I.P. will offer awards at selected polo tournaments in conjunction with the United States Polo Association.

T.I.P. also announced its youth ambassadors for the 2021 T.I.P. Youth Ambassador Program. The 16 ambassadors, including four returning ambassadors from 2020, come from 12 states and cover multiple disciplines. The following are the 2021 T.I.P. youth ambassadors:

Structured Internship Program To Be Offered By The Jockey Club

As part of its efforts to support young people who are interested in entering the Thoroughbred industry, The Jockey Club has announced the creation of a structured summer internship program for college students and recent college graduates. The program will start this summer and will accommodate up to three interns.

“While we have taken on interns in the past, we are excited to offer an official program to educate enthusiastic individuals on the vast operations of The Jockey Club and our contributions to the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industries so that they are set up for success when seeking full-time employment,” said Matt Iuliano, executive vice president and executive director of The Jockey Club. “The Jockey Club believes it is important to invest in the future workforce of our industry, which we have committed to through this initiative and our recently expanded academic scholarship offerings.”

Interns will gain exposure to all companies and departments within the organization, and they will have the opportunity to spend additional time in areas that they find to be of particular interest. The program will last eight weeks.
