TERF Awards $4,000 to TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program Inc. with $4,000.

TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program Inc., launched in 2012, promotes and develops second careers for racehorses that have retired from the track.

In alignment with their mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF continues to offer their financial assistance in 2022.

“Education is key to the success of Thoroughbred aftercare,” TAKE2 Executive Director Andy Belfiore said. “There are so many resources available to owners and trainers, like our TAKE THE LEAD program, and we have to be sure they know all the options and are informed on how the retirement process works. We have to let racing fans and the public know that our industry cares and is deeply committed to our horses beyond the track. We have to engage with the sport horse community to inform them of the many organizations, such as TAKE2, that provide incentives for competing on Thoroughbreds. Thanks to the support of TERF, we can put together events like the Lunch and Learn on Aftercare at Saratoga and get the message out on aftercare.”

TERF Named TAKE2 August Donor of the Month

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF), an offshoot of Thoroughbred Charities of America established to provide focused funding for equine education and research, has provided funding to the tune of $4,000 for an aftercare education program and for its generosity, has been recognized as 'TAKE2 Donor of the Month' for August.

TAKE2 set a goal of raising $10,000 a month for 10 months in honor of its milestone 10th anniversary this year. With the generous help of previous 'Donors of the Month' Len Green and the Green Group, TAKE2 competitor Patricia Hurter, Empire Racing Club's Kyle Emmich, the New York Thoroughbred Breeders and New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund, and Michael Sternklar of Clear Stars Stable, the campaign is on track to meet its goal. More than $55,000 has been raised over the first 5 1/2 months of the year.

“We like to fund pilot studies by young researchers,” said Dr. Kathy Anderson, co-chair of TERF's board of trustees. “We want to support projects that are small enough that they fly under the radar of large funding agencies.”

The Labor Day event at Saratoga will feature TAKE2 Executive Director Andy Belfiore; TAKE2 President Rick Schosberg; and Dr. Keith Bogatch, an equine veterinarian who will speak to participants about the relationship between Thoroughbred owners and veterinarians and about how to decide when it's time to retire a racehorse.  Also scheduled to speak are Monique Coston from Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue; and Deanna Mancuso from Lucky Orphans.

Held at the Spa Verandas, located at the top of the stretch, the event will include a day at the races from a trackside seat; a light lunch; and the aftercare presentation. Tickets are $25.

For additional information or to RSVP, contact Andy Belfiore at take2breds@gmail.com. Tickets are limited and the deadline to RSVP is Friday, Aug. 26.

TERF Awards to the University of Minnesota Foundation

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has announced that the University of Minnesota Foundation will be the recipient of a $4,000 reward intended for student educational use. Formally renamed in 2012 to its current moniker, TERF strives to ensure that a next generation of equine stewards, who would not ordinarily have the option to further their equine studies, will not be left behind. In alignment with both missions to support and promote equine education, TERF continues to offer financial assistance to a program which provides hands on experience as well as wide-ranging opportunities spanning the breadth and depth of all things equine. The University of Minnesota's Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources also gives the students a chance to partake in activities cultivating a wide range of knowledge and skills to prepare them for careers in the equine industry.

TERF Awards $5,000 to TRF

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) will award the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) $5,000 to be used for educational purposes. The TRF, whose mission is to rescue ex-racehorses, no longer able to compete at the racetrack, from neglect, abuse, and slaughter, collaborates with correctional facilities in eight states to provide vocational training to inmates who, in turn, care for horses that are not suitable for second athletic careers. TRF will use the funds to implement the Second Chances Farm Groom Elite (SCGE) Vocational program at all TRF Second Chance Programs. TRF's goal is to provide standardized level of education at each facility, educate inmates on proper care of thoroughbreds, and create higher skilled individuals who can receive gainful employment upon release from prison.
